Abstract

1474088 Centrifugal separators KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AG 3 June 1974 [1 June 1973] 24399/74 Heading B2P A centrifuge for separating a mixture of flowable materials into at least two phases of different densities comprises a drum 2, a feed device 8 for the mixture inserted axially into one end of the drum, a deflection device 16 within the drum separation chamber, in the region of the mouth of the feed device 8, which on impingement by the mixture, is effective to deflect the mixture towards the wall of the drum, and at least one discharge opening 10 (11) for each phase at the other end of the drum, the openings being spaced radially from the axis of the drum with the discharge opening 10 for the highest density phase being furthest from the drum axis. The mixture may be at least partially molten metals and/or metal compounds, e.g. slag containing metallic lead in dispersed form. The drum has a cover 6 and is rotatably supported on a bearing pin 1 of a mounting by means of an integral hollow hub 4 which is connected to driving means. A heat and corrosionresistant removable lining 9, e.g. made from a cobalt-chromium-iron alloy, is provided on the inner surface of the wall of the drum and the outer surface of the hub 4. Both these surfaces may be covered, at least partially as shown at 19, with heat insulating material. Deflecting blades are provided at 12, 13 to direct the different phases into respective collecting devices 15, 14. In operation, the drum is preheated and rotated and the flowable mixture is delivered by the feed device 8 on to the deflection device constituted by the surface 16 of the lining 9 and is flung by centrifugal force towards the longitudinal wall of the drum where centrifugal separation takes place. Alternatively, the drum may be conical with its base constituting the discharge end, or the drum may be cylindrical with a heat- and corrosion-resistant conical insert fitted inside it. The deflection device may be constructed as a rotary deflection plate.
