1417627 Testing P.C.M. encoders and decoders HASLER AG 23 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 49349/73 Heading H3H In a pulse-code-modulation end station, the analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue converters 6, 13 are tested by generating digital test words at 16, converting to serial form at 17 and to analogue form in D to A converter 13, storing the thus derived analogue signal at 20, reconverting back to digital form in the A to D converter 6 and to parallel form at 24 for comparison at 25 with the digital test word itself. If a difference is detected, the polarity bit of the test word is reversed and if a difference still persists after a predetermined number of repetions of the same test word, an alarm lamp 27 is energized. 32 test words chosen to give no overall D.C. component are employed, a new test word being generated once per 2 frames. The least significant bits need not be tested, the test words being chosen so that the least significant of the bits compared does not vary. Capacitor 22 decouples any D.C. offset.
