Abstract

:Fuel cell stack (100) comprising a plurality of unit fuel cells (8) which are stack onto each other, wherein each unit fuel cell (8) comprises at least an anode plate (41), a cathode plate (42) and a membrane electrode assembly (6) being sandwiched by the anode plate (41) and the cathode plate (42). Each anode plate (41) and cathode plate (42) comprises a front side with reactant distribution structures (43) facing the anode/cathode plate of the membrane electrode assembly (6) and a backside (46) with coolant distribution structures (45) facing the anode/cathode plate (42) of an adjacent unit fuel cell (8) or a current collector plate of the fuel cell stack (100), wherein the fuel cell stack (100) comprises at least one malfunctioning unit fuel cell (9), and wherein the anode plate (41) and the cathode plate (42) of the malfunctioning unit fuel cell (9) are electrically contacted.
