Description
MATERIAL HANDLING VEHICLE AREA OF THE INVENTION The present invention is related to a material handling vehicle and a method of operating a material handling vehicle, according to the annexed claim set.
BACKGROUND lt is known with floor conveyors that have switching elements by which it is possible to access favourite functions, one such floor conveyor is described in EP2889255.
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Once the prior art has the switching elements assigned the functionality is acceptable. Howeverthere is a need for an improvement regarding the time and effectiveness required for assigning aselected functionality to a favourite switching element. ln particular there is in the material handlingenvironment a need to adapt the favourite functions more often as the work load increases. Also theamount of assignments that is expected by the operator to be able to achieve during the working dayincreases. Thus there is a need for the operator to in a quick simplified manner to adjust thefavourite functions several times a day. lt is also a need to improve the safety for the choice of favourite functions as the configuration is adjusted more often.
Thus it is proposed a material handling vehicle comprising, a control unit for controlling functions ofthe material handling vehicle. The vehicle also comprises a display device for the display ofinformation relating to the functions of the material handling vehicle. The display device is attachedto the material handling vehicle. The attachment is preferably arranged such that removal of thedisplay device requires the use of a tool or the like. The display device comprises a touchscreen. Thedisplay device is arranged such that it is able to display buttons on the touchscreen. The touchscreenis arranged such that it allows for use of swipe gesture command input. Wherein a predeterminednumber of favourite buttons are arranged to be displayed on the touchscreen. The favourite buttonsare arranged to be able to be assigned a respective predetermined function by an operator of thematerial handling vehicle. The material handling vehicle is arranged such that the assignment of afunction to a favourite button is able to be made by a swipe gesture command input. This swipegesture command input is resulting in a movement of a displayed function to a predetermined favourite button on the touchscreen.
The advantage of the material handling vehicle is that the operation of the vehicle is simplified. Alsothe assignment of favourite buttons can be made in a swift and simple manner, such that anoperator can perform this operation several times during a work-day. Also the safety in assignment is improved by the simple and logical operation of the display. Further the effectiveness in operation with the material handling vehicle is improved as there is no need for applying a technical person toperform the assignment to the favourite buttons. Further the manoeuvre is very intuitive and there isless risk that the wrong function is assigned to a particular favourite button. Furthermore byproviding a complete material handling vehicle with a fixedly attached display device, there is a highsafety improvement as the device cannot be removed or detach itself in a material handling environment. Thus the overall safety of the material handling vehicle is improved.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above and further thevehicle is arranged such that the assignment of a function to a favourite button is only able to be performed after an actuating of a predetermined assignment button on the touchscreen.
For a further improved safety of operation the assignment of favourite buttons with a swipe gesturecommand input is only possible after an acknowledgment by actuating a particular assignment button that opens up the possibility to assign functions to favourite buttons.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above and wherein the display device is arranged such that the number of favourite buttons is limited to three. ln order to safeguard an improved operation of the material handling vehicle there is an explicitreason for limiting the number of favourite buttons. The swipe gesture command input instead allows for new assignments during the work day.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the favourite buttons are always displayed in the touchscreen such that immediate action is possible.
By making the favourite buttons mandatory on the display device the function and usage of the material handling vehicle and its display unit is rendered very effective.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the display device is arranged such that a predetermined function can only be assigned to one favourite button. ln order to improve safety when using the display device it is an advantage that the same functioncannot be actuated by means of two parallel buttons. |.e. the same function will not appear morethan once on the favourite button menu. Even if this at a first thought might appear to be a minorproblem it might prevent an operator from understanding that further functions is available for operating the material handling vehicle.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the displaydevice is arranged such that an assigned function to the favourite button is acknowledged by an operator feedback by vibration and/or sound.
As the assignment of a function of a favourite button can be made several times during a work day, it is further improving the safety of the operator receives a feedback once an assignment is finished.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the displaydevice is arranged such that an assignment to a favourite button cannot be performed if the travel function and/or lifting function of the material handling vehicle is in operation.
Depending on the type of function that is assigned, an improved safety can be achieved if there is aninbuilt block of the assignment to the favourite buttons in when the material handling vehicle is inoperation. This in particular prevents an operator from performing an important material handlingfunction at the same time as the operator is amending the display device. Thus the operator isprevented from being distracted when performing important material handling tasks, such as lifting a heavyload.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above, wherein the material handling vehicle further comprises a load carrier comprising a pair of forks.
The applied display device is particularly suitable for a fork-lift truck. Giving good safety in an environment where it is desired to not distract the operator from the material handling performed.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the material handling vehicle further comprises a hydraulic system.
The applied display device is particularly suitable for a fork-lift truck. Giving good safety in an environment where it is desired to not distract the operator from the material handling performed.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the materialhandling vehicle further comprises a mast on which a load carrier can move in a lifting or lowering mOVement.
The applied display device is particularly suitable for a fork-lift truck. Giving good safety in an environment where it is desired to not distract the operator from the material handling performed.
Also a mast involves lifting loads to higher levels, thus requiring a well-functioning operator environment, to which the proposed material handling vehicle adds.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the material handling vehicle is powered by electricity through an on board battery.
It is particularly favourable to use the material handling vehicle with an electric drive train. In generalelectric drive trains are clean in operation, thus the operation of the display device is not as exposed to oil and fuel that it could have been in a combustion driven material handling vehicle.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the controlunit is arranged to be able to detect and monitor the display unit, wherein the control unit isarranged such that if the control unit is not able to detect or monitor the display unit, the material handling vehicle is set in a safety mode that prevent operation of the material handling vehicle.
This augments the safety operation of the vehicle and also implies that the display unit is able tocontrol functions of the material handling vehicle that are important for the safety when operating the vehicle.
Further it is proposed a material handling vehicle according to any aspect above wherein the materialhandling vehicle is arranged such that when an operator log in to the material handling vehicle, the favourite buttons are set according to the same operators last assignment of the favourite buttons.
The advantage is that there is a quick hand over between different operators of the vehicle. Also the incoming new operator will not be surprised by a different layout of the buttons on the vehicle.
Further it is proposed a method for operating a material handling vehicle, by assigning apredetermined function to a favourite button of a material handling vehicle according to any of the aspects above. The method comprising the steps of:I. initiate an assignment operation, preferably by pressing an assignment button,II. press a function button, III. perform a swipe gesture command input and move the chosen function button to the favourite button.

Such a vehicle is in general known as afork-lift, floor-conveyor, fork-lift truck, very narrow isle truck, order-picker truck, a reach truck, astacker, a support leg truck, etc. The material handling vehicle may also be a counter balance forklifttruck. The material handling vehicle is powered by a motor for travelling. The motor may be electric. The motor may also be a combustion engine, however for an indoor material handling vehicle this isnot preferred. The material handling vehicle may have an on-board battery. The material handlingvehicle may also have a load carrier. The load carrier may be a pair of forks. The load carrier maycomprise more than two forks, for example four forks. The load carrier may be movable on a mast. The mast may be movable in horizontal direction in longitudinal direction of the material handlingvehicle, i.e. perform a reach operation. The material handling vehicle comprises a hydraulic systemwhich powers hydraulic functions. Hydraulic functions may comprise lifting, lowering, reaching with the load carrier, tilting the load carrier in longitudinal direction, etc.
Figure 1 discloses a material handling vehicle 1 according to the disclosure. ln this case it is a very narrow isle truck.
Figure 2 also discloses a material handling vehicle 1 according to the disclosure. ln this case a reachtruck. The reach truck has a mast 15 that is movable in the longitudinal direction, i.e. in the direction of the load carrier 12 of the reach truck.
The material handling vehicle 1 according to the disclosure has a control unit 2. The control unit 2 is arranged such that it can control the functions of the truck, i.e. for example lights, wipers, window heating, seat heating, fan, height pre-set, cabin-tilt, climate control, air-conditioning, positioningcommunication etc. lt is also possible to control the travel function, such as parameter settings for abrake function, lifting and lowering of the load carrier 12. The reach function of a reach truck is alsopossible. See for example figure 3 and 4. The control unit 2 may be a main control unit of thematerial handling vehicle. The control unit 2 may also be a dedicated control unit that is arranged tocontrol a display device 3, see figure 1, 2 and 3. Preferably the communication from the control unit2 to the controlled functions is made with a serial connection, the serial connection may be a cableconnection or a wireless connection. The CAN-protocol may be used as a mean for communication of input and output of the control unit 2 to the controlled functions.
The display device 3 is arranged such that it is not removable from the material handling vehicle 1.The display device 3 cannot be removed by the operator of the material handling vehicle 1. ln orderto remove the display device 3 for service etc., a tool is needed. The display device 3 is thus fixedlyattached to the material handling vehicle 1. However the display device 3 may be adjustable, e.g. fordifferent operators ergonomic needs of viewing, reach etc. The attachment can be made for exampleby using screws, glue, hard snap in attachments etc. The display device 3 is thus an integral part ofthe material handling vehicle 1. Further there may be added safety features such that for example ifthe control unit 2 cannot detect the display device 3 the material handling vehicle 1 is set in a safety mode and cannot be operated.
The display device 3 is provided with a touchscreen 4. The touchscreen 4 is arranged such that it candisclose display buttons 5 on the touchscreen 4, see for example buttons 7, 8, 9 of figure 3, and alsofigure 4 with buttons 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21. The buttons can be actuated directly on thetouchscreen 4. lt is preferred that the respective button comprises a respective pictogram that defines the function to which the button is linked.
The display device 3 thus have different screens which can be accessed by a swiping movement orthe use of arrows 24, 25, see figure 9. The first screen which is showed in figure 3 may be referred toas the home screen. The home screen is the screen which is intended to be used when the materialhandling vehicle 1 is in normal operation. However other screens as shown in Figure 4, may also beused when operating the material handling vehicle. However the screen in Figure 4 may be referred to as the assignment page or the assignment screen.
The present disclosure is related to the assignment of favourite functions to a particular set ofbuttons 7, 8, 9. The assignment is made from an assignment page of the display device 3. |.e. on theassignment side of the display device, a group of functions of assignable buttons 10, 11, 17, 18, 19, , 21, is presented on the display device 3. The assignment page disclosed in figures 4-8 is preferably reached through a sideway swipe gesture command input, one such swipe gesture isillustrated in Figure 9. A legend 22 may be added to disclose the order of pages that is possible to swipe to on the display device 4.
On the assignment page, assignment screen, see figure 4, the operator presses an assignment button10. As the assignment button 10 is pressed the display device 3 allows for a swipe gesture commandinput. ln figure 5 the operator choses to assign a first favourite button 7 with the left lighting button11. At the choice of the button 11 the favourite button 7 is assigned to a height pre-set. The operatorpresses the left lightning button 11 and drags the button 11 to the favourite button position as canbe seen in figure 6. The previous function that was assigned as a favourite button will move away asthe new function is assigned to the favourite button 7. The previous function may position itself in anautomatic way to the position where the newly assigned function was previously positioned. As analternative all functions have their predetermined ordinary position when they are not assigned asfavourite buttons. Thus when a function is moved from a favourite position it will return to itspredetermined position on the predetermined screen. And the predetermined position is left emptyif a function is assigned to a favourite button. lt may also be so that as a function is assigned to afavourite button the function remains also in its predetermined position on the screen from which the functions are chosen.
As the assignment of favourite buttons have been terminated the assignment operation may beacknowledged by a pressing of the assignment button 10 again. There is also possible to instead havea timing, for example the possibility to assign functions to the favourite buttons is ended after a timeperiod of 3-15 seconds after the latest assignment. The acknowledgment may also be fullyautomatic. |.e. the new function is acknowledged as soon as it has been moved to this position. And the operator can immediately start using the favourite button as assigned. lt may also be so that an operator does not desire any favourite buttons to be assigned. ln this eventit is possible for the operator for example to drag the favourite buttons to an empty space on the assignment page.
As the assignment of a favourite button the display device 3 may be arranged such that there is atactile feedback given to the operator. lt is for example possible that the display device 3 is arrangedsuch that there is a vibration of the display device 3 as the assignment of a favourite button isfinished. The display device may also give a tone as the assignment is made. However for certainfunctions it may not be preferred with a feedback. For example there should not be a dilution of thefeedback function when not necessary. One situation where feedback is not needed is for example for lights, as it is apparent for the operator if the lights are turned on or not.
The display device 3 may be arranged such that the favourite buttons is shown on any page of thedisplay device 3. Thus even if a swipe gesture command input is made to the touchscreen 4, thefavourite buttons 7, 8, 9 will be remain in position. This makes it possible for an operator to alwayseasily find the favourite buttons. This is thus to the contrary of what is disclosed in figure 9. Howeverit should be understood that if it is not relevant for a page that the favourite buttons are alwaysdisplayed, they may be dispensed with on that page. For example on menu pages where the favourite buttons is not relevant to be used, they may be dispensed with.
The display device 3 may be arranged with any number of favourite buttons. However it is preferredto arrange the favourite buttons to be sufficiently large for easy and safe operation. lt is thuspreferred with a predetermined number of favourite buttons. Three favourite buttons is a number offavourite buttons that function well with the safety and size of the buttons. However any numberbetween one and five favourite buttons give good safety and size of the favourite buttons. But thenumber of favourite buttons may be dependent on the size of the screen. lf a large screen is used more favourite buttons can be applied compared with a smaller screen.
The material handling vehicle 1 may be arranged such that the assignment of favourite buttons isprevented when the travel function or the hydraulic function is operating. However it is preferredthat there is a grouping made of the functions. Thus, the material handling vehicle 1 may be arrangedsuch that functions that do not move the vehicle 1 or operate the hydraulic function will still bepossible to assign to favourite buttons. Example of these type of functions has been mentionedabove i.e. left lighting 11, right lighting 17, window heating 19, wipers 18, seat heating 20, fan 21, cabin tilting 8. Also height pre-set assigned to favourite button 7 may be assignable.
As an operator log on to the material handling vehicle 1 the display device may be arranged such thatthe latest configuration of the favourite buttons is disclosed to the operator. However as assignmentis safe and quick with the present disclosed material handling vehicle 1, this function is purely optional.
Figure 9 discloses a general swipe gesture command input, in this case to return to the home screen.lt should be understood that for any embodiment of the material handling vehicle it is possible to usea swipe gesture command input to switch page on the screen. However, it may also be arranged suchthat the arrows 24, 25 in the bottom part of the screen is used for changing page. Thus it may bothbe a swipe gesture and a use of arrows 24, 25 for switching page. But it may also be only arrows 24,25 or only a swipe gesture command input that is arranged for switching page. The arrows 24, 25 are used by a simple pressure gesture.
The disclosure is also related to a method for operating a material handling vehicle. The methodincludes assigning a predetermined function to a favourite button. There are four main steps included, I-IV, see Fig. 10.I. initiate an assignment operation, preferably by pressing an assignment button 10.
Step I is an operation that sets the material handling vehicle in a mode where assignment of favourite buttons is possible.ll. press a function button 11.Step ll means that the function button is pressed and hold pressed down. |||. perform a swipe gesture command input 6 and move the chosen function button to the favourite button 7.
Step ||| means that the pressed down function button is dragged to a favourite button position on the display unit.lt is thinkable to apply a fourth step for finishing the procedure.
IV. acknowledge the assignment of the favourite button 7.
