Description
lO A CIGARETTE PACK COMPRISING AN RFID/NFC TAG Technical field In accordance with the preamble of claim l, the presentinvention relates to a cigarette pack comprising: - a box body having an open upper end, a front wall, arear wall, a pair of side walls and a bottom wall; - a lid connected to the box body by a hinge and capableof opening and closing the upper end of the box body, thelid having an open lower end, a front wall, a rear wall,a pair of side walls and a top wall, the top wall havingan outside and an inside, which inside faces against theopen upper end, when the lid is in a closed position; - an inner wrapper comprising an aluminium layer isarranged on the inside of the box body, suitable forwrapping around a bundle of cigarettes; and - an RFID/NFC tag.
In the following of the application the term RFID/NFC tagwill be frequently used. In this context, this concernseither an NFC (Near Field Communication) tag or an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag.
Background - Problem There is a global trend that it is, or will be, forbiddenfor tobacco producers to have printed marketing andbranded content on their cigarette packages. This is, ofcourse, a problem for producers and marketers, sincebrand images is a highly important aspect in the tobaccobusiness. A way to solve this issue, is to equip thecigarette package with a RFID/NFC tag. An NFC/RFID tagcan engage with the costumer via an NFC equipped device, such as e.g. a smartphone. lO However, a technical problem with this is that manycigarette packs use a paper with an aluminum layer as aprotecting inner material. This inner material is used towrap the cigarettes and protect the cigarettes frommoisture, heat, cold and other external impacts. Thealuminum layer will prevent RFID/NFC tags fromfunctioning properly, as such tags normally don'tfunction well if they are attached close or onto a metal substrate.
A typical solution to such problem is to add anadditional ferrite layer to the RFID/NFC construction, asa layer between the transponder antenna conductor and thealuminum layer. Such solutions are widely available andknown. However, such a solution has some problems if itis applied onto a cigarette pack. To start with, ferriteis an expensive material and a low cost item, such as acigarette pack, cannot justify use of such an expensivematerial. Moreover, in order to function properly, theferrite layer must be relative thick, which also makesthe tag relative thick. And a thick RFID/NFC tag on theside wall of the cigarette pack might cause jamming in the cigarette packing process.
Object of invention An object with the present invention is to present acigarette pack which solve the above mentioned problemswith RFID/NFC tags in cigarette packs having a wrapping material with an aluminium layer.
Summary of the invention In accordance of the invention the RFID/NFC tag isarranged on the inside of the top wall of the lid andthat the RFID/NFC tag is located at a predetermineddistance away from the wrapping material. The distancesecures that the wrapping material won't interfere withthe RFID/NFC tag antenna, which in turn makes the need of a ferrite material not necessary.
Detailed description of the invention In the following the invention will be described more in detail with reference to figure 1.
Figure 1 discloses a cigarette pack 1 in accordance withthe invention. The cigarette pack 1 comprising a box body2 having an open upper end 3, a front wall 4, a rear wall 5, a pair of side walls 6 and a bottom wall 7.
The cigarette pack further comprising a lid 8. The lid 8is connected to the box body 2 by a hinge 9 and capableof opening and closing the upper end 3 of the box body 2.The lid 8 having an open lower end 10, a front wall 11, arear wall 12, a pair of side walls 18 and a top wall 13,14. The top wall 13, 14 having an outside 13 and aninside 14, which inside 14 faces against the open upperend 3, when the cigarette box is in a closed position. The rear wall 12 of the lid 8 is connected to the rear wall 5 of the cigarette box 2 via the hinge 9.
Moreover, the cigarette pack 1 comprising an innerwrapper 15, with an aluminium layer, which inner wrapper15 is arranged on the inside of the box body, suitable for wrapping around a bundle of cigarettes.
Figure 1 discloses the lid in open position. When the lidis in a closed position the inside 14 of the facing against the top of the inner wrapping 15.
The cigarette pack 1 further comprising an RFID/NFC tag16. The RFID/NFC tag 16 is arranged on the inside 14 ofthe top wall 13, 14 of the lid 8. The RFID/NFC tag 16 isarranged to enable interacting with an NFC equippeddevice, e.g. a smartphone. When the lid is closed theRFID/NFC tag 16 is facing against the top of the innerwrapping 15. The dimensions of the cigarette pack ensuresthat there is a predetermined distance between theRFID/NFC tag 16 and the inner wrapping, such that thealuminium layer of the metal in the inner wrapping won'tinterfere the antenna of the RFID/NFC tag. In order tosecure the predetermined distance between the tag and theinner wrapping, is a thick spacer material 17 applied onthe inside 14 over the RFID/NFC tag 16, such that thespacer material 17 is arranged between the RFID/NFC tag16 and the inner wrapping 15. The spacer material 17 maybe any radio frequency (RF) friendly material such as apiece of paperboard, corrugated board or plastic foametc. The predetermined distance between the RFID/NFC tagand the wrapping material is at least 1 mm and preferably in the range 1-3 mm.
A great benefit with the present invention is that theposition of the RFID/NFC tag in the lid won't cause any jamming in the cigarette packing process.
In the foregoing, the invention has been described on the basis of some specific embodiments. It is appreciated, however, that other embodiments and variants are possiblewithin the scope of the following claims. For example thespacer material 17 may be arranged in different ways toensure that the predetermined distance between theRFID/NFC tag 16 and the wrapping material 15 is reached. In an alternative embodiment the spacer material 17 isarranged on one or both sides of the tag, such that thespacer material 17 build up a distance that is greater than the height of the RFID/NFC tag 16.
