Description

538 361 Stick-on handle device Technical field The present invention relates to a stick-on handle device according to the preamble of claim 1.
Background When a person is to transport a bulky object by carrying the object outdoors for a longer distance, e.g. when carrying home a large framed painting or a flat screen tv from a store, the bulky object is often protected during the transport by using a large package, e.g. putting it into a large container or by covering the object by wrapping it in packing material such as e.g. durable paper in order to protect it against rain etc.
If the package is flat such as e.g. a package containing a framed painting or a flatscreen tv, one could carry the package by holding it under ones arm and pressing it against ones body, but this is awkward especially when walking for a long time and more so if the package is heavy.
One way of making it more convenient to carry a package containing a bulky object is to wrap a string around the package and carry the package by the string instead, thus using parts of the string as a handle. This could on the other hand lead to unwanted consequences, such as e.g. the string cutting a hole in the package and damaging the object carried therein during transport or the string eating its way into the hand of the carrier especially when carrying a heavy package for a long time.
Another way of making it more convenient to carry a package containing a bulky object is to attach handles to the package and carry the package by the handles instead.
US 2004/0222651 Al and DE 203 13 167 U1 show handles for attachment to a container. Summary of the invention The problem of facilitating transport of a flat package of the above kind is solved according to the invention by a stick-on handle according to the characterizing portion of claim 1. 1 538 361 By that the stick-on handle comprises an elongated strip comprising a handle section attached to a handle piece, and further comprises on the respective side of the handle section and adjacent thereto arranged respective first and second spacing sections attached to each other and thus defining a spacing means, and at a distance from the handle section and adjacent to the respective spacing section arranged respective first and second fastening sections arranged to be fastened to the package, where further a respective hole is arranged in each of the spacing sections thus creating an opening through which a user may grip with a hand around the handle piece, the advantage of that a stick-on handle of one size can be used by different persons having different hand sizes is achieved. Further is achieved a stick-on handle which is easy to attach to the package, and which can be manufactured at such a low cost that it can be used as a disposable handle, i.e. it can be attached to a package, the package can be transported using the handle, and thereafter the handle can be disposed of together with the package. Further, it can be made of recyclable materials. A further advantage is that if a package is sent by post, the stick-on handle can be attached to the package when the package is picked up at the post office by the addressee.
Brief description of drawings The invention will be described closer with reference to the attached drawings, where: Figure 1 shows schematically a view of a stick-on handle device for a package according to a first embodiment of the invention, Figure 2 shows schematically a view of the back of the stick-on handle device according to figure 1, Figure 3 shows schematically a view of a stick-on handle device for a package according to a second embodiment of the invention, and Figure 4 shows schematically a side view of the stick-on handle device according to figure 3 when attached to a package.
Description of preferred embodiments Similar parts in the different figures are denoted with the same reference numerals. 2 538 361 Figure 1 shows schematically a view of a stick-on handle device 2 for a package 4 according to a first embodiment of the invention. The stick-on handle device 2 comprises an adhesive-backed (see figure 2) elongated strip 6 of material and a handle piece 8, the adhesive backing being covered by a protective film (see figure 2), where the handle piece 8 is attached to the elongated strip 6 substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction L of the elongated strip. The elongated strip 6 comprises a handle section 10 attached to the handle piece 8, and further comprises on the respective side of the handle section 10 and adjacent thereto arranged respective first and second spacing sections 12, 14 (see also figure 2) attached to each other and thus defining a spacing means 16, and at a distance from the handle section 10 and adjacent to the respective spacing section 12, 14 arranged respective first and second fastening sections 18, 20 arranged to be fastened to the package 4, where further a respective hole 22, 24 is arranged in the respective spacing section 12, 14 thus creating an opening 26 through which a user may grip with a hand around the handle piece 8. By arranging an opening 26 through which a user may grip with a hand around the handle piece 8 with all fingers at the same time, it is possible for users having different sized hands to use a stick-on handle device of the same size for carrying a package 4.
In the embodiment shown in the figure, the elongated strip 6 of material is of substantially the same width W all along its longitudinal direction L which is preferred for manufacturing purposes as this minimizes the material spill, but it is of course possible to vary the width W of the elongated strip 6 of material along its longitudinal direction L if so is desired.
Preferably, the respective hole 22, 24 arranged in each of the spacing sections 12, 14 is arranged adjacent to a respective hole 28, 30 (see also figure 2) arranged in the handle section 10 thus creating an opening 32 exposing the handle piece 8. This can be advantageous if the elongated strip 6 of material is of a material with low friction and the handle piece 8 is of a material with higher friction, thus resulting in better grip for the user.
This can further be advantageous for manufacturing reasons in order to avoid sharp corners in the respective hole 22, 24 arranged in each of the spacing sections 12, 14 which otherwise could increase the risk of ripping of the elongated strip 6. 3 538 361 In the embodiment shown in the figure, the first and second fastening sections 18, 20 are of substantially the same length, but it is also possible to make the first and second fastening sections 18, 20 of differing lengths as will be further discussed in relation to figures 3-4.
The handle piece 8 may be substantially rigid in order to facilitate a more comfortable grip for the user, but may also be somewhat flexible if so desired.
In the embodiment shown in the figure, the handle piece 8 is shown substantially solid, but it may also be arranged more or less hollow. One advantage with a hollow handle piece 8 is that it then could be manufactured using a tube of stiff paper material thus decreasing the weight and cost thereof.
Figure 2 shows schematically a view of the back of the stick-on handle device 2 according to figure 1. The adhesive backing 34 of the elongated strip 6 of material arranged to be attached to the package is shown together with the protective film 9. Here is also shown the possible opening 32 in the elongated strip 6 exposing the handle piece 8. Also shown is spacing section 12 and hole 28 arranged in the handle section 10.
When the stick-on handle device 2 is to be attached to a package, the centre of gravity of the package is established, the end of the spacing means 16 not adjacent to the handle piece 8 is placed preferably above the established centre of gravity, and by removal of the remaining protective film 9 protecting the adhesive backing 34 and pressing the adhesive backing 34 against the package 4 the stick-on handle device 2 is attached to the package 4, this facilitating easy and fast attachment.
Figure 3 shows schematically a view of a stick-on handle device 2 for a package according to a second embodiment of the invention. This embodiment differs from the one discussed in connection with figures 1 and 2 in that the first and second fastening sections 18, 20 are of differing lengths. As can be seen in the figure, at least one of the first and second fastening sections 18, 20 can have a length which is substantially larger than the average width of the elongated strip 6, e.g. a length which is at least twice the average width of the elongated strip 6, preferably at least three times the average width of the elongated strip 6, more preferably at least four times the average width of the elongated strip 6. 4 538 361 Figure 4 shows schematically a side view of the stick-on handle device 2 according to figure 3 when attached to a package 4, where the thickness of the elongated strip 6 is exaggerated for purposes of better understanding of the invention.
As can be seen in the figure, the first and second fastening sections 18, 20 are of differing lengths according to this embodiment. This is advantageous especially when the package 4 is heavy, as the longer fastening section 20 can be placed around the lower edge 36 of the package 4 thus increasing the area which is to carry the weight of the package 4. This embodiment is thus useful e.g when carrying a flat screen tv or other heavy object in a package 4, one can then attach the stick-on handle device 2 to the package on one "outer" side 38, the bottom 36, and the "inner" side 40, preferably about 50 mm on the "inner" side in order to let the material and not the adhesive joint take up the weight of the package 4, whereafter one can grab the handle piece 8 on the "outer" side 38 of the package 4, lift up the package 4 so that the "inner" side 40 of the package rests against the side of ones body below ones arm whereby the spacing means 16 between the package 4 and the handle piece 8 allows for a comfortable position of the hand grabbing the handle piece 8 when carrying the package 4.
The stick-on handle device 2 can e.g. be manufactured as follows, reference is here made to figures 1-4: Firstly, respective holes 22, 24, 28, 30 are made in the respective first and second spacing sections 12, 14 and in the handle section 10 of the elongated strip 6 having an adhesive backing 34 covered by a protective film 9, Thereafter, the protective film 9 not previously removed is removed from the handle section and the respective first and second spacing sections 12, 14 of the elongated strip 6, After this, the handle piece 8 is pressed against the adhesive backing 34 on the handle section 10 of the elongated strip 6, Whereafter the adhesive backing 34 on the respective first and second spacing sections 12, 14 is pressed against and attached to each other, the first and second spacing sections 12, 14 thus defining a spacing means 16, the stick-on handle device 2 now being ready to be attached to a package 4. rial such as spunbound olefin fiber th sufficient strength and
