Abstract
Description
15 20 25 30 35 501 -653 2 device fans and filters, face visor and ear protection, with corresponding resistance to use by the user.
An object of the present invention is therefore to provide an improved protective helmet.
According to the invention, the protective helmet is characterized by an air channel delimited inside the housing and having an inlet towards the rear part of the housing and a number of outlets which are connected to the front part of the housing and are directed towards the inside of the visor and at least some of its marginal edges which in use extend close to the wearer's face, a filter connected to the channel, and an air pusher for introducing air into the channel, and in that the front part of the housing is provided with protective side cheek plates which in use complement the visor and earmuffs to provide continuity around the wearer's face.
Further features of the invention appear from the dependent claims.
It is advantageous if the air duct extends from the neck area to end at the front part of the housing in the outlet or any outlet which in operation supplies air to the upper part of the visor when it is in its operative, extended position in front of the wearer's face, so that the interior of the visor is swept with air. Preferably, a plurality of outlets for the air duct are provided, which outlets are so directed that in operation they sweep the interior of the visor with air and are directed towards the marginal edges of the visor which are located close to the wearer's face, thereby providing a pneumatic seal around the face for to minimize the presence of harmful atmospheric pollutants.
An inner protective cover is suitably arranged inside the cover at a distance from the same, which cover suitably delimits the channel between the cover and the inner surface of the cover. The air duct extends over a significant part of its length between the casing and the inner cover, which is branched at the front part of the casing to provide both the number of outlets and the space for the visor to be retracted.
The housing can be designed so that at its rear part it forms an outer wall and at its front part an inner wall, the front part being provided with a cover to form a channel into which the visor can be retracted. The cover in such an embodiment is designed so that it gives the helmet a continuous or substantially continuous outer profile. The cover may, for convenience, be removable and replaceable, with suitable fixtures being provided for this purpose.
The filter may suitably extend over the inlet to the duct, and the air pusher may be arranged inside the duct behind the crest of the housing. The air pusher consists of at least one fan, preferably battery-powered.
The visor can be detachably mounted in a holder with a replaceable transparent section that forms the visor itself.
Alternatively, the holder may comprise a frame in which a replaceable transparent section may be insertable.
The visor holder can be slidably mounted to the inside of the housing by means of side supports each having slots with which bushings on the holder engage to allow in use an arcuate displacement movement of the visor to and away from an operative position in front of the wearer's face.
Each ear protection (hearing protection) can suitably be arranged mainly within the profile of the helmet in order to thereby ensure that there are no bulges which, in use, could constitute a risk of getting caught.
The front part of the casing may be pointed or pointed and be provided with protective side cheek plates which in use complement the visor and earmuffs to provide continuity around the wearer's face. The side jaw plates form a proximity seal between the visor frame and the wearer's face, thus providing increased protection against side drafts of contaminated air.
The front part of the housing may be provided with a bracket for a lamp of the type used in underground mining, which lamp is battery powered. In one of the embodiments described above, the cover would be provided with the bracket at the front of the helmet. The demountable cover provides a large degree of usability, whereby various additional devices can also be offered on a variety of covers.
By way of example only, an embodiment of the protective helmet according to the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side view of the helmet partly in section and in position on a wearer's head; Fig. 2 is an interior view of the helmet; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the center line of an earmuff for the helmet; and Fig. 4 is an exploded view of the earmuff shown in Fig. 3.
En huvudsele (ej visad) är anord- nad inuti höljet 2 för att få andningsapparaten att bekvämt vila på bärarens huvud 3.Reference is now made to the drawing figures 1 and 2 which at 1 show a protective helmet in the form of a driven helmet-breathing apparatus in position on the wearer's head 3, which breathing apparatus comprises a protective cover 2 with a rear part 4, a crown 6, a front part 8 and sides 10. A head harness (not shown) is arranged inside the housing 2 to make the respirator rest comfortably on the wearer's head 3.
An inner upholstery 12 extends from the rear part 4 to the front part 8 and delimits in the neck area an air inlet 14 over which a filter 16 of suitable fibrous material is arranged. The filter 16 is clamped in a holder 13 and can thus be easily disassembled and replaced. 50 15 653 A further inner lining, which comprises parts of the housing 4, 6, 8, extends through the parts 4, 6 and downwards through the part 8 and ends in a plurality of outlets 20 in the form of slots. An air duct 22 is thus delimited inside the housing 2 between its inside and the covers 12 and 4, 6 and 8.
A front cover 9 is attached to the cover 2 to give the outside a helmet a smooth profile, and together with the front part of the protective cover 8 the cover 9 provides a space 42 in which the visor 30 can be retracted.
1).An air pusher in the form of two battery-powered fans 24 is located inside the duct 22 on sound-absorbing brackets 26 behind the crest 2 of the housing 2. The power to the fans 24 is suitably provided by a body-mounted battery pack (not shown) having such a capacity that it is also sufficient to drive a lamp (not shown) which is releasably attachable to the front part 9 of a holder 29 arranged for this purpose (Fig. 1).
A visor 30 comprising a holder 32 which is releasably attached to a transparent window 34 is slidably and pivotally mounted on supports 38 attached to the sides of the helmet housing 2, with bushings 39 attached to the visor holder 32. The supports 38 have curved slots in which the bushings are designed to slide.
The visor 30 is retractable in the space 42 which is delimited between the part 8 of the housing 2 and the inner wall of the outer cover 9.
The visor 30 has a stop for abutment against a limit position switch (not shown) so that when the visor is pulled out completely in front of the wearer's face, the power supply to the fan 24 starts. In this position the visor is also sealed against the inside of the outer cover 9 by means of a sealing strip 21. The visor can alternatively seal against the outside of the housing 8 along its lower edge. A limited pivoting movement about the lower bushing 39 can be provided to allow the lower part of the visor to move closer to the wearer's face, and is achieved by means of a small recess in the slot in the support 38, into which recess the upper bushing can be moved. In its operative position as shown in Fig. 1, the Visor 30 together with the cheek plates 52 and the earmuffs 60, which will be described below, on the sides 10 of the housing 2 provide panoramic protection for the front part and the sides of the wearer's face.
The visor 30 may be provided with a plurality of proximity seals (not shown) to reduce the distance between the edges of the visor and the wearer's face in order to further minimize the entry of polluted air into the wearer's breathing zone.
öronskyddet 60 är anpassat till den allmänna profilen på hjälmen 1.Reference is now made to Fig. 1 which on one side of the driven helmet breathing apparatus 1 shows an ear protection (hearing protection) 60 which is attached to the housing 2. A corresponding ear protection (not shown) is arranged on the other side of the housing. the earmuff 60 is adapted to the general profile of the helmet 1.
Huvudhushöljet 102 är fastsatt på avstånd från en öppningsförsedd bakplatta 103 varvid mellan dem är inneslutet ljudabsorberande material 104.Reference is now made more particularly to Figures 3 and 4, according to which each earmuff 60 comprises an outer cover 101 arranged to form a bracket for the helmet 1 and to accommodate a main housing cover 102 for the earmuff. The main housing housing 102 is fixedly spaced from an apertured backplate 103 with sound-absorbing material 104 enclosed therebetween.
A cruciform spring 105 is held in position within the housing 102 and is contacted by a telephone actuation / release button 106 provided with a sealing surface 106a for abutment against a seat 114 formed about an opening 114a extending axially through the housing 102, and the arrangement is such that when the button 106 is pressed against the action of the spring 105, the opening 114a opens and in use allows sound to pass inwards in the earmuff in the direction of the helmet wearer's ear, via the opening back plate 103. Releasing the pressure on the button 106 allows the spring 105 to return the button to a sealing position relative to the opening 114a whereby the earmuff is restored in its noise-reducing role.
Fjädrarna 107 är fästa vid den yttre kåpan 101 med användande av vibrationsdämpare 108.An ear seal 113 is attached to the back plate 103 in a position which is comfortable for the wearer, and forms a contact seal with the part of the wearer's head which directly surrounds the ear. 501 653 Wire-shaped springs 107 support the housing cover 102 inside the outer cover 101 so that when the housing cover 102 is pressed into the cover 101, the springs 107 retain the cover 102 therein using the "over center" principle. When the housing cover 102 is pushed in the opposite direction, the springs 107 press the earmuff seal 113 against the wearer's head with the correct pressure to provide noise attenuation. The springs 107 are attached to the outer cover 101 using vibration dampers 108.
In use to allow the use of a telephone, the telephone headset (not shown) is brought into contact with the button 106 and sufficient pressure is applied to push in the spring 105 and thereby open the opening 114a. The outer part of the telephone earphone is pressed against a seal 110 arranged on the housing cover 102 to exclude external noise. In this mode, sound is transmitted from the telephone headset via the opening 114a, through the housing cover 102 and the apertured backplate 103 to the wearer's ear. Removing the telephone headset from contact with the 106 button allows the earmuff to automatically return to its mode with complete attenuation.
A reflective band 109 is wrapped around this part of the housing 102 so that when the earmuff is in its inoperative position (parking position), when no sound attenuation occurs, the reflective band is visible outside the outer cover 101. When the earmuff is in its work same position, it is not easy to see the reflective band 109.
The outer cover 101 is provided with means for attachment to a helmet in one of several positions to fit the width of the wearer's head. The fastening can be done by means of screws 112 or by means of other suitable means.
The relatively front part of the outer cover 101 is provided with a pair of tongues 115 with a series of holes into which a visor stop pin 111 can be inserted. The pin 111 is inserted into a pair of holes suitable for the wearer to provide a 501 653 8 convenient and effective position for retaining the visor close to, but not in contact with, the wearer's face.
When used, the helmet 1 fits snugly and comfortably on the wearer's head 3, initially with the visor 30 in its retracted position inside the space 42, the fans 24 standing still. Downward movement of the visor 30 moves it to its operative position, as shown in Fig. 1. At the same time, releasing the limit switch (not shown) allows re-establishment of the power supply to the fans 24 which consequently provides an air flow through the inlet 14 and the filter 16 into the duct 22 and then to the outlets 20, from which the air moves downward between the visor 34 and the wearer's face to ventilate them with filtered air and provide cooling. Due to the slit shape of the outlets 20 and the tight fit of the visor 30 with the cheek plates 52 and earmuffs 60, an air shield passes in a concentrated flow over the wearer's nose and mouth, and the air flow passes out between the lower edges of the visor 30 and the wearer's chin and lower parts of the cheeks. The earmuffs 60 are located inside the general profile of the helmet 1 housing 2 and do not form a protrusion that could pose a risk. The use of a fully integrated and "tailor-made" helmet according to the present invention, where the earmuffs are located within the casing profile, enables effective sound attenuation to be achieved.
The present invention thus provides a versatile and in many areas useful driven helmet respirator with an optimal number of protective features, while being less bulky and weighing less than its predecessors. Replacement of the filter and of the visor window is also simplified, which reduces the cost and time required for repair.
