Abstract

1,150,613. Determining inorganic carbon. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 21 Sept., 1966 [22 Sept., 1965], No. 42178/66. Heading B1X. The inorganic carbon content of a liquid is determined by passing a carrier gas stream substantially free of carbon dioxide at a constant rate through a heating conduit 6 having a heating zone at a temperature above 100‹C but below that temperature at which organic components of the liquid undergo decomposition, the heating conduit containing a solid body 20 which is either acidic or has an acidic coating, and which acts to liberate carbon dioxide from any carbonate or bicarbonate in the sample, injecting into the conduit a predetermined amount of the sample to be analysed, for example by means of a syringe inserted into a tube 62, and sweeping the gaseous products into a carbon dioxide analyzer. The solid ibody may be quartz chips or wool, acid resistant thermoset plastics materials, silica or acid-inert metal chips coated with acid, for example phosphoric acids, sulphuric acid, terephthalic acid, benzene sulphonic acid. In the apparatus of Fig. 1 (not shown), carrier gas is freed from carbon dioxide in purifier 11 and passes through pressure regulator 12 and flow meter 14 to the inlet end of heating conduit 6. Sample is injected by means 3. Gaseous products from conduit 6 pass through water-cooled condenser 28 and optional gas filter 30 to carbon dioxide analyzer 35, the signals from which operate recorder 39. There is reference to insertion of the sample by means of gasdriven sprayers.
