Abstract
1,126,344. Creels; apparatus for supplying strands to cabling machines. GENERAL CABLE CORP. 4 Oct., 1965 [16 Nov., 19641, No. 41971/65. Headings D1J and D1T. The apparatus comprises a frame carrying an upper and a lower row of reel supporting spindles 14, 16 Fig. 1 (not shown), each row extending lengthwise of the frame with the spindles thereof projecting horizontally from the frame, there being a tension controlling strand pay-off guide 38 for each reel and' a strand guide means 34 between each pay-off guide 38 and its associated reel 28. The guide means 34, 38 are all between the two rows of spindles and the guide means 34, 38 for any one spindle causes the strand passing thereover to have the same bends as the strands of the other spindles whereby any working of the strands, if of wire, is uniform for all the strands. Tension control. In Fig. 3 the supply reel 28 is driven, through gearing, by a motor 82 having a main field winding 120 and a control winding 122. The strand pay-off guide 38<SP>1</SP> is at the end of an arm 42<SP>1</SP> pivoted at 44<SP>1</SP>. The tension in the yarn 32 tends to rock the arm 42<SP>1</SP> clockwise and a spring and link assembly 104<SP>1</SP> to 112<SP>1</SP> applies an opposing torque. Rigid with the arm 42<SP>1</SP> is a wheel 50<SP>1</SP> coupled by a belt drive 541 'to a rotary transformer 60<SP>1</SP>. If the tension in the yarn 32 decreases the resulting anticlockwise movement of the arm 42<SP>1</SP> causes the transformer 60<SP>1</SP> to adopt a fresh setting changing the current flow in the winding 122 to speed up the motor 82 to a valve that will re-establish the desired tension. Similarly if the tension in the yarn 32 increases the resulting clockwise movement of the arm 42<SP>1</SP> will cause the transformer 60<SP>1</SP> to adopt a setting in which the current in the winding 122 increases the speed of the motor 82 to reduce the tension in the yarn. By varying the diameter of the pulley wheels 50<SP>1</SP>, 52<SP>1</SP> the control response of the apparatus for a given change in tension can be varied.
