Abstract

1,036,045. Counting particles. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. Feb. 18, 1965 [Feb. 27, 1964], No. 7015/65. Heading G4D. Particles, such as red or white blood cells, in a liquid medium are counted by passing a unit volume through a thin passage in a transparent tube (Figs. 3-6, not shown) a small but variable area of which is illuminated by a collimator 24. The absence of a particle allows the light to strike a dark disc 94 so as not to affect the countor. The presence of a particle, however, diffuses the light which is doublereflected by concave mirrors 86, 92 and activates photo-multiplier 132. A threshold circuit discards pulses of incorrect amplitude. The counter may operate an oscilloscope or penrecorder. Samples may be tested sequentially (Fig. 9, not shown) with automatic washing and removal of bubbles between successive tests.
