Abstract
1,069,838. Dispersible food agglomerates. GENERAL MILLS, Inc. Dec. 31, 1963 [April 2, 1963], No. 51428/63. Heading A2E. [Also in Division F4] In apparatus for drying dispersible food agglomerates, e.g. flour, starch, egg whites, milk, egg yokes, whole eggs, orange juice, coffee, tea, chocolate drink products, gelatin, pectin, inorganic salts and gums, the agglomerates formed in an agglomerator 10 are introduced into a drying gas stream having a temperature of 250 to 300‹F. and a velocity of 500 to 4,000 ft. per minute, with which they are cocurrently passed downwardly through a drying zone and recovered in the dry state therefrom. The apparatus comprises a substantially vertical tubular drying chamber 21 of extended length, into the upper end of which the agglomerates pass from the agglomerator 1 through a tube into the interior of a perforated cone (18, Fig 2 not shown) and the drying gas from a heater 13 is introduced through the perforations in the cone (18) so as to pass co-currently downwardly through the chamber 21 with the agglomerates to a lower, separating chamber 25. The separation chamber is of greater cross-section than the chamber 21 to decrease the velocity of the drying gas 24 which passes to a cyclone separator 31 and the dried agglomerates settle to a fluidised bed 28 of the agglomerates formed on shoot 29 for discharge.
