Abstract

A water-soluble or dispersible composition for protecting metal surfaces as a paint or lubricating composition, consists of (1) a hydrophyllic organic or inorganic colloid material (2) a corrosion inhibing agent, and (3) a wetting agent. It is stated that water or humid atmosphere assists in generating anti-corrosive properties of the coating, and may be applied to iron and steel surfaces, and machined parts. Examples of (1) are, agar, alginates, gum, starch and starch ethers, gluten and products thereof, casein, gelatin, cellulose ethers, and alkali metal silicates; (2) alkali nitrites, and the chromates, phosphates, phosphites, borates, nitrites, and salicylates of water-soluble organic bases, e.g. amines, and amino-alcohols such as tri-ethanolamine; (3) alkali metal soaps, petroleum sulphonates, and epoxy-type condensation products of ethylene oxide and octyl or nonyl phenol. Optional additions include glycerol, and fillers, e.g. talc, CaCO3, ZnS, PbCO3, Al2, O3, wood flour and aluminium metal powder. A small amount of a low molecular alcohol assists drying of the coating which may be hardened by spraying with formalin or an aqueous solution of an aluminium salt.ALSO:A water-soluble or dispersible composition for protecting metal surfaces consists of (1) a hydrophilic organic or inorganic colloid material, (2) a corrosion inhibiting agent, and (3) a wetting agent. It is stated that water or a humid atmosphere assists in generating anti-corrosive properties of the coating, and may be applied to iron and steel surfaces, machined parts, and used as a tool lubricant. In contrast with oily compositions, the coating is readily removable from the metal surface. Examples of (1) are agar, alginates, gum, starch and starch ethers, gluten and products thereof, casein, gelatin, cellulose ethers, and alkali metal silicates; (2) alkali nitrites, and chromates, phosphates, phosphites, nitrites, borates, and salicylates of water soluble organic bases, e.g. amines, and amino alcohols, e.g. triethanolamine; (3) alkali metal soaps, petroleum sulphonates, and epoxy-type condensation products of ethylene oxide with octyl or nonyl-phenol. Optional additions include glycerol and fillers, e.g. talc, CaC3, alumina, PbCo3, ZnS, wood flour, and aluminium metal powder. A small amount of low molecular alcohol assists in drying of the coating, which may be applied by painting, immersion or spraying. The coating may be hardened by spraying with formalin or an aqueous solution of an aluminium salt. Alternatively, the coated surface may be further protected by applying a sheet of paper to the coating before drying out.ALSO:Metal surfaces (e.g. wire and steel sheets, tubes and containers) are sprayed with or immersed in, an anticorrosive water-soluble or -dispersible coating composition comprising (1) a hydrophilic organic or inorganic colloid, (2) a corrosion inhibiting agent, and (3) a wetting agent. The coating may be hardened by spraying with formalin or an aqueous solution of an aluminium salt. Examples of (1) are agar, alginates, gum, starch, starch ethers, gluten and products thereof, casein gelatin, cellulose ethers, polyvinyl alcohol, and alkali metal silicates; (2) alkali nitrates and the chromates, phosphates, phosphites, borates, nitrites and salicylates of water-soluble organic bases e.g. amines and amino alcohols such as triethanolamine; (3) alkali metal soaps, petroleum sulphonates and epoxy-type condensation product of ethylene oxide and octyl or nonyl phenol. Optional additives include glycerol, and fillers e.g. talc, calcium, carbonate, zinc sulphide, lead carbonate, alumina, wood flour and aluminium metal powder.
