Abstract

1,087,751. Fluid-pressure servomotor systems. GARDNER DENVER CO. Jan. 20, 1965 [March 30, 1964 No. 2428/65. Heading G3P. [Also in Division F1] To reduce the power required to drive a positive displacement rotary compressor in its unloaded condition, a pilot valve 68, Fig. 1, responsive to pressure in the compressor discharge line 70 operates to control piston-actuated valves 66, 104, 106. The valve 66 controls the intake of air to the compressor and the valves 66, 104 the flow of oil which is used to cool, seal and lubricate the compressor. When the compressor is operating in its loaded condition, oil collected in the airreceiver 52 passes through a line 98 to a cooler 100 and thence by way of a line 102 to the valve 104. The valve 104 at this time connects the line 102 to a line 106 to supply a gear pump 96 drivingly connected to the main rotor shaft of the compressor which pressurizes the oil. The oil then passes through pump discharge port 96b to line 108, the valve 110 and a line 112 to an oil receiving gallery 38 in the compressor. When demands are satisfied, the pressure in the discharge line 70 rises to unseat the pilot valve 68 to operate the pistons of the valves 66, 104, 110. The valve 66 closing to cut off air supply to the compressor, the valve 110 interconnecting the line 108 with a line 134 connected to the receiver 52 and the valve 104 interconnecting the line 104 with a line 113 fitted with a now closed non-return valve 54 through which the receiver 52 is normally supplied. The pump 96 which is in operative circuit with the compressor outlet 34 now functions as an evacuating pump to extract any oil or air from the compressor which extract passes through the valve 104, pump 96 and valve 110 to the receiver 52. A choke 160 fitted between lines 102, 112 ensures that a sufficient quantity of oil from the receiver passes to the gallery 38 to lubricate the compressor when unloaded. The compressor described is of the inter-meshing screw type but the invention may be applied to other types of positive displacement rotary compressors, e.g., rotary sliding vane compressors or dry compressors in which latter case the gear pump could be replaced by a readily available source of vacuum.
