Abstract

Polymerization of vinyl acetate with ethylene, propylene or both, and optionally with up to 4% of an acrylic acid or alkyl acrylate, is affected under pressure in the presence of a peroxy initiator, an emulsifier (e.g. octyl-phenoxypolyethoxyethanol) and a trace of a colloidal suspension of hydrogenated palladium. Latexes made in this manner are used in cement compositions.ALSO:A cementitious composition comprises a finely divided hydraulic cement and a minor proportion of a water-insoluble film-forming copolymer comprising 20-80% by weight vinyl acetate and 80-20% by weight ethylene and/or propylene. Minor amounts of other copolymerizable monomers may also be present, e.g. up to 4% of an alkyl acrylate or an acrylic acid. The weight ratio of cement: copolymer may be between 3:1 and 40:1. Aggregates may be included e.g. sand, ground glass, emery powder, slag or gravel. Compositions may be used as masonry paints or in repairing damaged concrete surfaces. Optional additives include protective colloids such as casein, carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium polyacrylate or ammonium caseinate; anti-foaming agents such as dry wax, lauryl alcohol, stearyl alcohol or silicones; water reducing agents such as sodium lignin sulphonate or salts of hydroxylated carboxylic acids; and antimycotics e.g. sodium phenate or chlorophenate. The cement may be Portland, white, natural, aluminous or puzzolanic cement.
