A sintered refractory article of silicon carbide is made from a powder mixture of silicon carbide, silicon and calcium silicide and/or a calcium silicon nitrogen compound which is heated to above 1250‹C. in an atmosphere containing nitrogen and oxygen such as air or nitrogen and carbon dioxide, so as to form a binder of silicon oxynitride Si 2 ON 2 . Alkaline earth metal fluorides such as CaF 2 may also be added in minor amounts and the calcium silicon nitrogen compounds added are Ca (SiN) 2 or CaSiN 2 which are formed by heating CaSi 2 in nitrogen at 900‹-1200‹C. The dry mixture may be wetted with 4-5% of a 50% aqueous solution of a waste sulphite liquor and the compacted mixture is heated rapidly to 1350‹-1450‹C.
