Abstract
1,055,852. Local viewing by scanning. CEDARS OF LEBANON-Mt. SINAI HOSPITALS OF THE LOS ANGELES JEWISH MEDICAL CENTER. April 27, 1965 [April 27, 1964], No. 17699/65. Heading H4F. The distribution of radio-active isotope in a body on a table 13 is determined by a detector 11 which is traversed over the body in the x direction in a succession of parallel lines spaced apart in the y direction, the output from the detector being applied to modulate the grid 88 of a cathode-ray tube 21 which is scanned in steps with the detector movements by signals generated by potentiometers 29, 30, whereby the tube displays a light pattern corresponding to the distribution of radio-activity. The cathode-ray tube is photographed by colour camera 20, and in accordance with the characteristic feature of the invention the recorded image is given a colour characteristic, in accordance with the level of activity determined by the detector, by means of a multi-colour filter 23 which is positioned so as to introduce a particular colour under the control of a servosystem 28 actuated by a rate-meter 15. The filter may include colours corresponding to the visible spectrum and the operation may be such that areas of maximum activity are given the colour red and areas of less activity colours extending progressively through the spectrum to violet. The signals from the detector are applied to an analyzer which responds only to signals due to the particular isotope in use and produces output pulses of constant amplitude and width which recur at a rate directly proportional to the measured radio-activity. The pulses control rate-meter 15 directly, but are applied to modulate the cathode-ray tube grid via a one-shot trigger circuit 83 having an adjustable pulse width control to permit a suitable photographic exposure. The connections from potentiometer 29, 30 to the cathode-ray tube deflection plates include amplitude control potentiometers 45, 46 and lift potentiometers 60, 61 to allow for adjustment of the scan by detector 11 to accommodate bodies of varying size and position. A saw-tooth oscillator 80 imparts a high frequency oscillation to the cathode-ray tube in a direction transverse the x direction to fill the spaces between successive lines. A switch 86 and associated circuits 91, 92, 97, 98 permits the detector signal to be replaced by manually produced pulses for the purpose of adding reference marks to the photographic recording.
