Abstract

1,133,662. Treating wood pulp. DEFIBRATOR A.B. 3 Feb., 1966 [11 Feb., 1965], No. 4773/66. Heading D2W. Fibre pulp is produced by steaming lignocellulose material (chips), impregnating with a chemical-containing liquid under a high hydraulic pressure that is greater than the superatmospheric pressure used in a subsequent cooking stage in steam and/or liquid phase, reducing the pressure to that in the cooking vessel, then cooking the pulp at the superatmospheric pressure. The high hydraulic pressure is applied whilst the material is in a compartment which forms part of a sluice device and which is separated from the steaming vessel and the cooking vessel. The hydraulic pressure can be 50kg/cm<SP>2</SP> or more. There may be a first impregnation with the chemicalcontaining liquid at a pressure lower than the high hydraulic pressure at a time after the steaming but prior to the impregnation under the hydraulic pressure. The impregnating liquid pumped to the compartment in the sluice valve may have a temperature of less than 100‹C. The material exposed to the high hydraulic pressure may sink, due to its increased specific weight, through the impregnating liquid to an outlet channel connected to the cooking vessel. There may be a second cooking stage using the same or different liquid. After cooking the material may be cooled with water before rleas of the pressure used during cooking. Steaming may be for 2-20 minutes at up to 130‹C at 5-10 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> pressure. Cooking in the presence of steam may be under 5-10 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> pressure.
