Abstract

The invention relates to an arrangement (2) for handling items (3), wherein the arrangement comprises a vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) that comprises a first rack (6) that comprises a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction for storage of said items and a vertical lift (8) that is operable for positioning said items (3) on the shelves and retrieving said items from the shelves. The arrangement (2) further comprises an items packaging machine (20) adapted for folding at least one sheet of packaging material (22, 78, 84) around the item, wherein the items packaging machine (20) is positioned adjacent the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4). The arrangement (2) further comprises an item transport device (24) for transporting items between the items packaging machine (20) and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4).

Description

TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to an arrangement for handling items, especially but not limited to fragile items, such as plates. Such items may alternatively be named tiles, porcelain, china, crockery, tablewear or ceramic.
The invention regards one step in a supply chain. According to one example, the invention is directed to repacking said items from packages comprising a large number of items to packages comprising a pre-determined small number of items and storing the later- mentioned packages before further transport. The packages comprising a pre-determined small number of items are normally stored in a Warehouse. One application of the invention is in e-commerce, wherein a certain number of items should be packed in response to an order. The packages comprising the large number of items may arrive on a pallet from a supplier. According to prior art, the repacking of the items to smaller packages are normally performed manually.
More specifically, there is a desire to package a plurality of same-sized items placed on top of each other forming a pile/stack. The items are packaged via wrapping a sheet of packaging material around the items.
SUMMARY A first object of the invention is to provide an arrangement for handling items, especially piles of plates, which creates conditions for an efficient supply chain.
The object is achieved by an arrangement according to claim 1. Thus, it is achieved by an arrangement for handling items, wherein the arrangement comprises a vertical storage and retrieval lift system that comprises a first rack that comprises a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction for storage of said items and a vertical lift that is operable for positioning said items on the shelves and retrieving said items from the shelves, wherein the arrangement comprises an items packaging machine adapted for folding at least one sheet of packaging material around the item, wherein the items packaging machine is positioned adjacent the vertical storage and retrieval lift system, and wherein the 2 arrangement comprises an item transport device for transporting items between the items packaging machine and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system.
By virtue of such an arrangement, it may be positioned adjacent a truck aisle in a Warehouse in a space-efficient Way. Thus, the items packaging machine may be arranged in the vicinity of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in the Warehouse. More specifically, the items packaging machine may be arranged adjacent the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a longitudinal direction of the truck aisle.
According to one further example, the vertical lift is adapted to move vertically and horizontally Within the vertical storage and retrieval lift system. More specifically, the vertical lift may be operable between a platform and the plurality of shelves for collecting packaged items from the platform and positioning collected packaged items on a selected shelf.
According to an embodiment example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system comprises a housing that houses the first rack and the vertical lift, Wherein the housing comprises a Wall facing the items packaging machine, Wherein the Wall defines an opening, Wherein the items transport device is adapted for transporting items between the items packaging machine and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system via the opening in the Wall. Providing the opening in the Wall facing the items packaging machine creates conditions for a space-efficient arrangement. Especially, in the application in a Warehouse, the arrangement creates conditions for transporting packages of items to the vertical storage and retrieval lift system along a route in parallel With the truck aisle and besides the truck aisle.
The housing may further comprise a further Wall that comprises a main opening for retrieving packages from the vertical storage lift system. The further Wall my be provided perpendicularly relative to the Wall facing the items packaging machine. More specifically, in a Warehouse application, the further Wall having the main opening may be arranged facing a truck aisle.
According to a further embodiment example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system has an elongated shape in a cross section in a horizontal plane With tWo laterally extending ends defining the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a longitudinal 3 direction and two longitudinally extending ends defining the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a lateral direction, wherein the items packaging machine is positioned adjacent a first end of said laterally extending ends of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system, and wherein the item transport device is adapted for transporting items between the items packaging machine and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system via the first laterally extending end. Providing such an arrangement where the laterally extending end of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system facing the items packaging machine creates further conditions for a space-efficient arrangement.
The term 'laterally extending ends" defines the two short sides of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system seen in a horizontal cross section. Accordingly, the "longitudinally extending ends" defines the two short sides of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system seen in a horizontal cross section.
According to one example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system covers a rectangular area projected on a floor, wherein the rectangular area has two laterally extending straight ends defining the area in a horizontal longitudinal direction and two longitudinally extending straight ends defining the area in a horizontal lateral direction. ln other words, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system has a main extension in a first horizontal direction and a secondary extension in a second horizontal direction that is perpendicular to the first horizontal direction, wherein the secondary extension is smaller than the main extension.
According to a further embodiment example, the opening for the items transport device is provided in a lateral wall defining the first laterally extending end.
According to one further example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system is arranged adjacent a truck aisle in a warehouse. More specifically, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system is arranged so that one of its longitudinally extending ends faces a truck aisle in a warehouse. According to one further example, the items may be stored on a pallet and delivered to an area adjacent the items packaging machine via a truck (forklift).
According to one further example, the sheet of packaging material may be formed by a flexible material, such as a structure of fiber material. The term fiber material relates to a 4 lignocellulose-containing material. More specifically, the sheet of packaging material may be formed by a cardboard material. Further, the sheet of packaging material may be provided with fold indications. Accordingly, the items may be packed in a carton box.
According to one further example, the item transport device is adapted to transport packed items (packages) from the items packaging machine to the vertical storage and retrieval lift system via the first laterally extending end.
According to one further example, the item transport device is adapted to transport packed items from the items packaging machine to a loading/unloading area inside of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system.
According to a further embodiment example, the arrangement comprises a first station for receipt of packaging material and a second station for receipt of items for packaging, wherein at least one of the first station and the second station are arranged adjacent to the items packaging machine, wherein the arrangement comprises a device for picking packaging material from the first station, items from the second station and delivering the picked packaging material and the items to the items packaging machine, wherein the items packaging machine is adapted for folding the packaging material around the item in a consecutive step.
According to a further embodiment example, the shelves in the first rack are elongated with a longitudinal extension in parallel With one of the longitudinal ends of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system.
According to a further embodiment example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system comprises a second rack with a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction, wherein the shelves in the second rack are elongated with a longitudinal extension in parallel with one of the longitudinal ends of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system, wherein the second rack is arranged at a distance from the first rack and wherein the lift is operable up and down between the first rack and the second rack.
According to a further embodiment example, the item transport device comprises a picking unit for picking an item and an elongated rail, wherein the rail has an extension on either side of one end of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system, wherein the picking unit is moveable along the rail for transporting items between the items packaging machine and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system.
According to one example, the rail has a straight extension. According to one further example, the item transport device comprises a horizontally extending rail arranged in parallel with the longitudinal ends of the vertical storage lift system. Further, the rail may be located vertically above the items packaging machine and comprise a robot adapted to move along the rail. The robot may in turn be adapted with picking means, such as gripping arms, to pick a package from the items packaging machine and transport the package to the vertical storage lift system.
According to a further embodiment example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system comprises an item entry and exit area, wherein the lift is operable to collect an item positioned in the item entry and exit area for storage in the rack and leave an item from the rack in the item entry and exit area.
According to a further embodiment example, the item transport device has an extension inside the vertical storage and retrieval lift system adjacent the item entry and exit area for positioning items in the item entry and exit area and/or collecting items from the item entry and exit area.
According to a further embodiment example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system further comprises a main opening for entry of items for storage and/or collection of stored items, wherein the main opening is in communication with item entry and exit area and is open towards an end of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system that is different from an end of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system facing the items packaging machine.
According to a further embodiment example, wherein the packaging machine comprises a platform having an upper surface and an opening in the upper surface, wherein the opening is sized so that the item to be packaged fits in the opening, wherein the machine further comprises an item support surface for supporting the item from below, wherein the item support surface is arranged in said opening, and wherein the machine further comprises a device for movement of the item support surface relative to the upper surface of the platform from an upper position to a lower position so as to cause at least one sheet of packaging material having an extension that is larger than an extension of the opening 6 and which is arranged on top of the item support surface and below the item to be packaged, to be at least partly drawn into the opening.
According to a further embodiment example, the packaging machine comprises a folding arrangement for folding the at least one sheet of packaging material around the item, wherein the folding arrangement comprises a first folding structure arranged on at least one side of the opening, wherein the first folding structure is adapted to contact a flap portion of the at least one sheet of packaging material adjacent a main portion of the at least one sheet of packaging material that is adapted for receipt of said item so that the flap portion is folded around a lower edge of the item.
According to one example, the upper surface of the platform is sized to support the at least one sheet of packaging material so that it covers the opening. The upper surface of the platform is preferably formed by a continuous upper surface surrounding the opening. Further, the upper surface of the platform preferably extends in a horizontal plane.
Further, the upper surface of the platform is preferably flat.
According to a further example, the platform is formed by a base table. The platform may comprise a board that is positioned in parallel with the horizontal plane and at a distance from the ground/floor, wherein an upper surface of the board forms the upper surface of the platform.
According to an alternative example, the platform may be provided with a plurality of upper surfaces, which jointly define the opening.
According to one example, the item support surface has the same shape as the shape of the opening. Further, a surface size of the item support surface is the same or somewhat small than a cross section size of the opening. ln other words, there is no gap, or only a small gap, bet\Neen the item support surface and the upper surface.
According to a further example, the item support surface comprises at least one suction opening, wherein the suction opening is adapted to pull the at least one sheet of packaging material onto the item support surface through a vacuum pump and thus assure a non-moveable position of a portion of the at least one sheet of packaging material during the folding operation.
According to a further example, the at least one sheet of packaging material comprises a first sheet, which comprises a main portion that is adapted for receipt of said item and at least one flap portion adjacent the main portion. The flap portion is adapted to be folded around the item. The first sheet may be provided with a fold indication between the main portion and the flap portion. According to one example, the first sheet comprises two flap portions on opposite sides of the main portion, wherein the flap portions may be folded around the item from opposite directions and connected to each other on top of the item.
According to one example, the first sheet is elongated and in the form of a strip. An extension of the strip in a transverse direction relative to its longitudinal direction may be generally as long as a corresponding extension of the item to be packaged. According to an alternative, an extension of the strip in a transverse direction relative to its longitudinal direction may be significantly shorter than a corresponding extension of the item to be packaged, which may provide a sufficient protection in the case of round plates. Consequently, the strip may be arranged for protecting any projecting parts of an item and/or be arranged to package a plurality of items, such as a pile of plates. Further, the at least one sheet of packaging material comprises a second sheet in the form of a strip, wherein the two strips may be arranged perpendicular relative to one another in a cross shape and on top of each other on the upper surface of the platform. According to an alternative, one single sheet may have the form of such a cross.
According to one example, the main portion of a strip of packaging material may have a rectangular shape, wherein the extensions of the main portion in two opposite directions match the maximum extensions of the item in two opposite directions. ln case the item to be packaged has a circular shape, the maximum extension is the diameter of the item, wherein the main portion of the strip may have a square shape _ Further, the flap portion may also have a rectangular shape, wherein the complete first sheet may have a rectangular shape. ln this way, an edge of the item may be completely surrounded and thereby protected by the at least one sheet of packaging material. ln a similar manner as was described for the strips, two separate such rectangular sheets may be arranged perpendicular relative to one another in a cross shape and on top of each other on the upper surface of the platform. 8 Further, the wording "drawn into the opening" may comprise only under the weight of the item and/or via some kind of pressure/suction. More specifically, the sheet of packaging material provided on top of the item support surface and below the item may be folded during said relative movement.
According to a further embodiment example, the item support surface is at least substantially flush with the upper surface of the platform when it is arranged in the upper position. ln this way, the item support surface may cooperate with the upper surface of the platform in supporting the at least one sheet of packaging material before the item is placed on top of the sheet.
According to a further embodiment example, the opening in the platform has a rectangular shape. ln this way, each one of the four edges of the platform that defines the rectangular opening may support the folding procedure.
Further advantages and advantageous features of the invention are disclosed in the following description and in the dependent claims.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EXAMPLE EMBODIMENTS Fig. 1A is a perspective view from the top of an arrangement 2 for handling items 3 according to a first embodiment. The arrangement 2 comprises a vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 that comprises a first rack 6 that comprises a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction for storage of said items 3, see fig. 1B. The vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 further comprises a vertical lift 8 that is operable for positioning said items on one of the shelves and retrieving said items from one of the shelves. The vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 has an elongated shape in a cross section in a horizontal plane with two opposite laterally extending ends 10, 12 defining the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a longitudinal direction and two opposite longitudinally extending ends 14, 16 defining the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a lateral direction. The shelves in the first rack 6 are rectangular and elongated with a longitudinal extension in parallel with one of the longitudinal ends 14, 16 of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4.
The vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 further comprises a second rack 18 that comprises a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction for storage of said items 3, see fig. 1B. The second rack 18 has a similar design as the first rack 6. Accordingly, the shelves in the second rack 18 are elongated with a longitudinal extension in parallel with one of the longitudinal ends 14, 16 of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4, wherein the second rack 18 is arranged at a distance from the first rack 6 and wherein the lift 8 is operable up and down between the first rack 6 and the second rack 18 for positioning said items on one of the shelves and retrieving said items from one of the shelves of one of the first rack 6 and the second rack 18.
The arrangement 2 further comprises an items packaging machine 20 adapted for folding at least one sheet 22 of packaging material around the items 3. The items packaging machine 20 is positioned adjacent a first end 10 of said laterally extending ends 10, 12 of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4.
The arrangement 2 further comprises an item transport device 24 for transporting packages of items from the items packaging machine 20 to the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 via the first laterally extending end 10.
The arrangement 2 further comprises a first station 26 for receipt of the packaging material 22 and a second station 28 for receipt of the items 3 for packaging. The first station 26 and the second station 28 are arranged in the vicinity of the items packaging machine 20 on an opposite side of the items packaging machine 20 in relation to the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4. More specifically, the first station 26 and the second station 28 are arranged next to one another in a row defined by the positions of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 and the items packaging machine 20. The arrangement 2 further comprises a device 30 for picking packaging material 22 from the first station 26 and items 3 from the second station 28 and in a consecutive step folding the at least one sheet of packaging material 22 around the items in the items packaging machine 20. The picking device 30 and the item transport device 24 are here integrated to a single device.
The item transport device 24 comprises a picking unit 32 for picking a package of items and an elongated rail 34, Wherein the rail 34 has an extension on either side of the first lateral end 10 of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4. Accordingly, the picking unit 32 is moveable along the rail 34 for transporting packages of items from the items packaging machine 20 and to the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 via the first laterally extending end 10. The picking unit 32 is here formed by a robot comprising an extendable arm With a gripper at its free end. ln fig. 1, a truck aisle 36 in a Warehouse is disclosed. The truck aisle 36 extends along a linear path. Further, a truck 38 (also called forklift) is shown in a position on the truck aisle 36. The arrangement 2 for handling items is arranged adjacent the truck aisle 36. More specifically, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 is arranged adjacent the truck aisle 36 in a Way that the longitudinal extending ends 14, 16 are in parallel With the longitudinal direction of the truck aisle 36 and a first one 14 of the longitudinal extending ends faces the truck aisle. 11 Further, the items packaging machine 20 is arranged adjacent the truck aisle 36 next to the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4. Further, each one of the first station 26 for receipt of the packaging material 22 and the second station 28 for receipt of the items 3 for packaging are arranged adjacent the truck aisle 36 so that the truck 38 may access items, the respective station for delivering pallets with packaging material and respectively, from the truck aisle.
The vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 comprises an item entry and exit area 40, wherein the vertical lift 8 is operable to collect an item positioned in the item entry and exit area 40 for storage and leave an item withdrawn from a shelf of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 in the item entry and exit area 40.
The item transport device 24 has an extension inside the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 adjacent the item entry and exit area 40 for positioning packages of items in the item entry and exit area 40.
The vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 further comprises a main opening 42 for collection of stored items. The main opening 42 is in communication with the item entry and exit area 40 and is open towards a first one 14 of the two longitudinally extending ends 14, 16. Thus, the main opening 42 is open towards the truck aisle 36.
The vertical storage lift system 4 further comprises a housing 44, wherein the storage racks 6, 18 with shelves are provided inside of the housing. The housing 44 comprises a lateral housing wall 46 defining the lateral end 10. The lateral housing wall 46 comprises an opening 48 for entry of packages of items into the housing 44. The housing 44 further comprises a longitudinal housing wall 50 defining the first longitudinal end 14 and that comprises the main opening 42 for retrieving packages from the vertical storage lift system. Accordingly, the lateral housing wall 46 and the longitudinal housing wall 50 are arranged perpendicularly relative to one another.
Fig. 2A is a partially cut perspective view from the top of a section of the arrangement 2 according to fig. 1, wherein a first packaging step is indicated. The rail 34 has a linear extension that is in parallel with the longitudinal direction of the longitudinal ends 14, 16 of the vertical storage lift system 4. More specifically, the rail 34 has an extension so that the 12 picking unit 32 that is moveable along the rail 34, see dotted line 52, may reach the first station 26 and the second station 28. Further, the picking unit 32 is adapted for picking a sheet of packaging material 22 from the first station 26, see dotted line 54 and position the sheet of packaging material 22 on a platform 56 of the packaging machine 20, see dotted line 58. More specifically, the packaging machine 20 comprises a table 60, wherein the platform 56 is formed by an upper flat top of the table 60.
The platform 56 has an upper surface 62 and an opening 64 in the upper surface 62, wherein the opening 64 is sized so that the item 3 to be packaged fits in the opening. Further, the machine 20 further comprises an item support surface 66 for supporting the item 3 from below. The item support surface 66 is arranged in said opening 64. Further, the machine 20 comprises a device 68 for movement of the item support surface 66 relative to the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 from an upper position to a lower position so as to cause at least one sheet of packaging material 22 having an extension that is larger than an extension of the opening 64 and which is arranged on top of the item support surface 66 and below the item 3 to be packaged, to be at least partly drawn into the opening 64.
The upper surface 62 of the platform 56 is formed by a continuous upper surface surrounding the opening 64. Further, the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 extends in a horizontal plane. Further, the upper surface 62 of the platform is flat. ln other words, the platform 56 is formed by a base table. More specifically, the platform 56 comprises a board that is positioned in parallel with the horizontal plane and at a distance from the ground/floor, wherein an upper surface of the board forms the upper surface 62 of the platform 56.
The items 3 is in the first embodiment a plurality of plates arranged on top of each other in a pile. ln the shown example, the plates are of the same shape and dimension. More specifically, each plate has a circular shape with a flat central portion and an inclined rim around the flat central portion. The opening 64 has a rectangular shape and more particularly a square shape. The opening 64 is sized so that a distance between opposed edges is somewhat larger than a diameter of the plates. Thus, the opening 64 is sized so as to admit passage of the plates 3. 13 The item support surface 66 has the same shape as the shape of the opening 64. Further, a surface size of the item support surface 66 is somewhat smaller than a size of the opening in a horizontal cross section. ln other words, there is a small gap bet\Neen the item support surface 66 and the upper surface 62. The item support surface 66 is at least substantially flush with the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 when it is arranged in an upper position.
The item support surface 66 is adapted to be lowered relative to the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 to such an extent that an upper face of the plates 3 is below the upper surface of the platform when it is arranged in the lower position. More specifically, the item support surface 66 is adapted to be lowered relative to the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 to such an extent that an upper face of the plates 3 is below the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 when it is arranged in the lower position. The device 68 for movement of the item support surface 66 is adapted for a controlled descent of the plates 3. ln other words, the item support surface 66 is urged downwards towards the lower position, wherein the descent is terminated when the item support surface 66 reaches the lower position. Thus, the device 68 for movement of the item support surface 66 is adapted for feeding the plates 3 vertically downwards. The device 68 for movement of the item support surface 66 is positioned vertically below the item support surface 66. Further, device 68 for movement of the item support surface 66 is formed by a piston-cylinder arrangement.
The sheet of packaging material 22 may be formed by a flexible material, such as a structure of fiber material. The term fiber material relates to a lignocellulose-containing material. More specifically, the sheet of packaging material 22 may be formed by a cardboard material. Further, the sheet of packaging material 22 may be provided with fold indications. The fold indications may be provided along straight lines for alignment with edges of the plates 3. Further, the sheet of packaging material 22 may be pre-creased.
The at least one sheet of packaging material 22 comprises a first sheet 78, which comprises a main portion 79 that is adapted for receipt of said plates 3 and at least one flap portion 80, 82 adjacent the main portion 79. The flap portion 80, 82 is adapted to be folded around the plates 3. The first sheet 78 is provided with a fold indication 72, 76 between the main portion 79 and the flap portion 82. More specifically, the first sheet 78 comprises two flap portions 80, 82 on opposite sides of the main portion 79, wherein the 14 flap portions 80, 82 may be folded around the item from opposite directions and connected to each other on top of the item, see further description below.
More specifically, t\No of said fold indications 70, 72 define the main portion 79. Further, a distance bet\Neen two adjacent fold indications 70, 74 and 72, 76, respectively, on either side of the main portion 79 define a height of the pile of p|ates 3 to be packaged.
More specifically, the first sheet 78 is elongated and in the form of a strip. An extension of the strip in a transverse direction relative to its longitudinal direction is about the same size as a corresponding extension of the p|ates 3 to be packaged. Further, a length of the strip 78 is substantially longer than a corresponding extension of the p|ates 3 to be packaged. More specifically, a length of the strip 78 is substantially longer than an extension of the opening 64 in a plane in parallel with the upper support surface 62.
Further, the at least one sheet of packaging material 22 comprises a second sheet 84, also in the form of a strip and of a same length as the first sheet 78. The second sheet 84, has a smaller transverse extension than the first sheet 78. The second sheet 84 has a similar configuration of fold indications as the first sheet 78.
Further, the item support surface 66 comprises at least one suction opening 86, wherein the suction opening is adapted to pull the at least one sheet of packaging material 78 onto the item support surface 66 through a vacuum pump (not shown) and thus assure a non- moveable position of a portion of the first sheet 78 during the folding operation.
The machine 20 further comprises a folding arrangement 88 for folding the at least one sheet of packaging material 78 around the item. The folding arrangement 88 comprises a first folding structure 90 arranged on two opposite sides of the opening 64, wherein the first folding structure 90 is adapted to contact the two flap portion 80, 82 of the first sheet of packaging material 78 so that they are folded from opposite sides around the pile of p|ates 3.
More specifically, the first folding structure 90 comprises a first movable member 92 that is movably arranged relative to the platform between a retracted position, where a contact section 96 of the first movable member 92 is at a distance from the opening 64, and an advanced position, where the contact section 96 is overlapping with the opening 64, for Contacting the first flap portion 80 of the first strip 78 so that the first flap portion 80 is folded around an upper edge of the pile of plates 3. The first movable member 92 is in the form of a rectangular plate and is arranged so that its upper surface is flush with the upper surface 62 of the platform 56. The folding operation will be further described below in association with fig. 2J.
Further, the first folding structure 90 comprises a second movable member 94 that is movably arranged relative to the platform between a retracted position, where a contact section 98 of the second movable member 94 is at a distance from the opening 64, and an advanced position, where the contact section 98 is overlapping with the opening, for contacting the second flap portion 82 of the first strip 78 so that the second flap portion 82 is folded around an upper edge of the pile of plates 3. The second movable member 94 is in the form of a rectangular plate and is arranged so that its upper surface is flush with the upper surface 62 of the platform 56. The folding operation will be further described below in association with fig. 2L.
More specifically, each one of the first movable member 92 and the second movable member 94 is movable along a straight line. Further, the first movable member 92 and the second movable member 94 are movable in parallel with each other in a mirrored relationship.
The folding arrangement 88 further comprises a second folding structure 96 arranged on two opposite sides of the opening 64, wherein the second folding structure 96 is adapted to contact two flap portion 85, 87 of the second sheet of packaging material 84 so that they are folded from opposite sides around the pile of plates 3.
More specifically, the second folding structure 96 comprises a first movable member 99 that is movably arranged relative to the platform between a retracted position, where a contact section 102 of the first movable member 99 is at a distance from the opening 64, and an advanced position, where the contact section 102 is overlapping with the opening, for contacting a first flap portion 85 of the second strip 84 so that the first flap portion 85 is folded around an upper edge of the pile of plates 3. The first movable member 99 is in the form of a rectangular plate and is arranged so that its upper surface is flush with the upper surface 62 of the platform 56. The folding operation will be further described below in association with fig. 2M. 16 Further, the second folding structure 96 comprises a second movable member 100 that is movably arranged relative to the platform between a retracted position, where a contact section 104 of the second movable member 100 is at a distance from the opening 64, and an advanced position, where the contact section 104 is overlapping with the opening, for contacting the second f|ap portion 87 of the second sheet 84 so that the second f|ap portion 87 is folded around an upper edge of the pile of plates 3. The second movable member 100 is in the form of a rectangular plate and is arranged so that its upper surface is f|ush with the upper surface 62 of the platform 56. The folding operation will be further described below in association with fig. 20.
More specifically, each one of the first movable member 99 and the second movable member 102 is movable along a straight line. Further, the first movable member 99 and the second movable member 102 are movable in parallel with each other in a mirrored relationship. The first movable member 99 and the second movable member 102 of the second folding structure 96 are movably arranged perpendicular to a movement direction of the first movable member 92 and the second movable member 94 of the first folding structure 90.
Turning now to fig. 2B, the picking unit 32 has picked the first sheet 78 of packaging material from the pile in the first station 26 and positioned the first sheet 78 on the platform 56 of the packaging machine 20 in a way that the first sheet 78 is on top of the opening 64 and that the longitudinal direction of the sheet 78 is in parallel with the moveable direction of the first movable member 92 and the second movable member 94. More specifically, the picking unit 32 comprises a suction cup 106 for acting on a flat upper surface of the sheet 78 for picking, holding and moving the sheet.
Turning now to fig. 2C, the picking unit 32 has been removed from the machine 20. The machine 20 comprises a device 108 for attaching the second sheet 84 onto the first sheet 78 in a crosswise relationship. More specifically, the device 108 comprises a nozzle 110 for applying an adhesive. The device 108 is adapted to apply the adhesive on an upwards facing surface of the central portion 79 of the first sheet 78. The sheet attachment device 108 is movably arranged in a horizontal direction, see arrow 112, back and forth in close proximity of the upper surface 62 of the table. 17 Turning now to fig. 2D, the picking unit 32 is adapted for picking the second sheet 84 of packaging material from the first station 26, see dotted line 114 and position the second sheet of packaging material 84 on the platform 56 of the packaging machine 20, see dotted line 116.
Turning now to fig. 2E, the picking unit 32 has picked the second sheet 84 of packaging material from the pile in the first station 26 and positioned the second sheet 84 on the platform 56 of the packaging machine 20 in a way that the second sheet 84 is on top of first sheet 78, vertically above the opening 64 and that the longitudinal direction of the second sheet 84 is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the first sheet 78.
Thus, the two sheets 78, 84 are arranged perpendicular relative to one another in a cross shape and on top of each other on the upper surface 8 of the platform 56. More specifically, the t\No sheets 78, 84 are arranged so that the overlap is positioned centrally with regard to the opening 64. The first sheet 78 and second sheet 84 are attached to each other in the cross shape so as to act like a single unit. More specifically, the first sheet 78 and second sheet 84 are attached to each other via the applied adhesive. The picking unit 32 may be adapted to exert a pressure from above on the second sheet 84 of packaging material during a certain time allowing the adhesive to harden.
Turning now to fig. 2F, the picking unit 32 is adapted for picking a pre-determined number of plates 3 from the pile of plates in the second station 28, see dotted line 118 and position the picked pile of plates 3 on the platform 56 of the packaging machine 20, see dotted line 120.
Turning now to fig. 2G, the picking unit 32 has picked the pre-determined number of plates 3 from the pile in the second station 28 and positioned the pre-determined number of plates 3 on the platform 56 of the packaging machine 20 in a way that the pre- determined number of plates 3 is vertically above the opening 64. More specifically, the picking unit 32 comprises a gripping unit 122 for gripping on opposite sides of the pile of plates 3.
Turning now to fig. 2H, the picking unit 32 has been removed from the machine 20. The machine 20 is shown in a state where the item support surface 66 has been lowered to a 18 position where its upper surface is lower than the upper surface 62 of the platform 56. The flap portions 80, 82, 85, 87 of the sheets 78, 84 have been pushed by the edges of the opening 64 during the lowering, see arrow 124, of the item support surface 66 relative to the upper surface 62 of the platform 56 and are here in a folded-up state around the lower edge of the pile of plates 3. More specifically, the flap portions 80, 82, 85, 87 project upwards and are inclined somewhat outwards.
Turning now to fig. 2l, the machine 20 is shown in a state where the item support surface 66 has been further lowered in relation to the upper surface 62 of the platform 56. The flap portions 80, 82, 85, 87 of the strips 78, 84 are here in a state projecting substantially vertically upwards, wherein they are in a close proximity to a side surface of the pile of plates 3 along a complete vertical extension of the side surface. ln other words, the flap portions 80, 82, 85, 87 of the strips 78, 84 are in close proximity of the peripheries of all plates in the pile of plates 3.
Turning now to fig. 2J, the second movable member 94 of the first folding structure 90 has been fonNarded to its advanced position, where the contact section 98 is overlapping with the opening 64 so that the second flap portion 82 of the first strip 78 is folded around an upper edge of the pile of plates 3.
The second flap portion 82 has an extension sufficient for reaching to an extent at least halfvvay into the opening 64. The second movable member 94 is adapted so that the contact section 98 reaches to an extent less than halfvvay into the opening 64 in the advanced position, thereby leaving space for glue application on an exposed section of the second flap portion 82.
An upper edge of the pile of plates 3 is the periphery of the rim of the uppermost plate in the tray. Now, the second flap portion 82 is folded to a folded-down state around the upper edge of the pile of plates 3 so that the second flap portion 82 is in contact with a surface of the uppermost plate in the pile facing upwards.
Turning now to fig. 2K, the device 108 is adapted for attaching overlapping flap portions 80, 82 of the first sheet 78 of packaging material to each other on top of the pile of plates 3 for maintaining the first sheet of packaging material 78 in a state surrounding the plates. 19 More specifically, the device 108 is adapted to apply the adhesive on an upwards facing surface of the second flap portion 82 of the first strip 78.
Turning now to fig. 2L, the first movable member 92 of the first folding structure 90 has been fonNarded to its advanced position, where the contact section 96 is overlapping with the opening 64 so that the first flap portion 80 of the first sheet 78 is fo|ded around an upper edge of the pile of p|ates 3.
Now, the first flap portion 80 is fo|ded to a fo|ded-down state around the upper edge of the pile of p|ates 3 so that the first flap portion 80 is in contact with a surface of the second flap portion 82 facing upwards. Thus, the first and second flap portions 80, 82 are now in an overlapping state, wherein the overlapping sections coincide with the applied adhesive. The first movable member 92 of the first folding structure 90 may be remained in its advanced position during a certain time allowing the adhesive to harden.
Turning now to fig. 2M, each one of the second movable member 94 and the first movable member 92 of the first folding structure 90 have been moved back to their retracted states. Further, the first movable member 99 of the second folding structure 96 has been fonNarded to its advanced position, where the contact section is overlapping with the opening 64 so that the first flap portion 85 of the second sheet 84 is fo|ded around an upper edge of the pile of p|ates 3.
The first flap portion 85 has an extension sufficient for reaching to an extent at least halfvvay into the opening 64. The first movable member 99 is adapted so that the contact section reaches to an extent less than half\Nay into the opening 64 in the advanced position, thereby leaving space for glue application on an exposed section of the first flap portion 85.
Turning now to fig. 2N, the device 108 is adapted to apply the adhesive on an upwards facing surface of the first flap portion 85 of the second sheet 84.
Turning now to fig. 2P, the second movable member 100 of the second folding structure 96 has been forwarded to its advanced position, where the contact section 102 is overlapping with the opening 64 so that the second flap portion 87 of the second sheet 84 is fo|ded around an upper edge of the pile of p|ates 3.
Now, the second flap portion 87 is folded to a folded-down state around the upper edge of the pile of plates 3 so that the second flap portion 85 is in contact with a surface of the first flap portion 87 facing upwards. Thus, the first and second flap portions 85, 87 are now in an overlapping state, wherein the overlapping sections coincide with the applied adhesive. The second movable member 100 of the second folding structure 96 may be remained in its advanced position during a certain time allowing the adhesive to harden.
Turning now to fig. 2P, each one of the second movable member 100 and the first movable member 99 of the second folding structure 96 have been moved back to their retracted states. The machine 20 is shown in a state where the item support surface 66 has been raised, see arrow 126, to a position where a package 128 of plates 3 are accessible from above of the platform 56. More specifically, the item support surface 66 has been raised back to its initial position where its upper surface is f|ush with the upper surface 62 of the platform 56.
Turning now to fig. 2Q, the picking unit 32 has picked the package 128 of plates 3 by means of the gripping unit 122.
Turning now to fig. 3A, the housing 44 of the vertical storage lift system 4 comprises a lateral housing wall 47 defining the lateral end 12 opposite the first-mentioned lateral end 10. The rail 34 extends to the lateral housing wall 47. More specifically, the rail 34 extends through the lateral opening 48. Further, the lateral opening 48 is sized for allowing the picking unit 32 to enter the housing 44 via the lateral opening 48 while moving along the rail 34, see arrow 130. lt is further indicated that the arm of the picking unit 32 is descended when the picking unit 32 is above the item entry and exit area 40 in the housing 44 for releasing the package 128 of plates in the item entry and exit area 40, see arrow 132.
The vertical storage lift system 4 further comprises a tray 134 positioned on a support surface of the item entry and exit area 40. A plurality of packages 128 are stored on the tray 134.
Turning now to fig. 3B, the tray 134 is moved from the support surface of the item entry and exit area 40 to the vertical lift 8, see arrow 136. Further, in a consecutive step, the lift 21 8 may be moved upwards in the vertical storage lift system 4 for positioning the tray on a selected shelf.
Each one of the movable members 92, 94, 98, 100 is associated to a piston-cylinder arrangement for effecting the movement. Further, each one of the contact sections 96, 98, 102, 104 of the associated movable member 92, 94, 98, 100 comprises a flat surface that is adapted to ride on the associated flap portion during the advancement and folding operation. More specifically, each one of the contact sections 96, 98, 102, 104 comprises a thin member Which comprises the flat surface. Further, the thin member has a rectangular shape. lt is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above and illustrated in the drawings; rather, the skilled person Will recognize that many changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
According to the embodiment described above, the picking device 30 and the item transport device 24 are integrated to a single device. According to an alternative, the picking device 30 and the item transport device 24 may be provided with separate picking units, such as robots. Further, tvvo such picking units may be operated on a single rail or each one of the picking device 30 and the item transport device 24 may be provided with a separate rail. According to a further alternative, any one of the picking device 30 and the item transport device 24 may be designed for operation without such a rail. Accordingly, any one of the picking device 30 and the item transport device 24 may be designed with a robot having an extendable arm that has a reach sufficient for its respective assignment.
According to an alternative design of the platform, the upper surface of the platform may be discontinuous in a direction around the opening. More specifically, the upper surface of the platform may comprise discrete contact areas or points circumferentially spaced around the opening. ln other Words, the upper surface forming support for the sheet of packaging material is adapted to provide support in at least two contact points located opposite each other of the opening, preferably in at least three contact points distributed around the opening and especially in at least four contact points distributed around the opening. 22 According to an alternative to using two separate sheets in the form of strips, a single sheet of packaging material in the shape of a cross may be used.
According to an alternative to using thin strips for the packaging, the at least one sheet of packaging material may be formed by a rectangular sheet with a transverse extension commensurate With or slightly smaller than a corresponding extension of the opening for covering the item to be packaged to a greater extent. More specifically, the machine may be used for forming a receptacle from at least one sheet and may be used for making a container (erecting a carton) by folding the sheet.
Further, according to an alternative to the described example where the truck collects packages from the item entry and exit area 40 via the main opening 42, it is of course possible for an operator in the Warehouse to manually withdraw a package from the item entry and exit area 40 via the main opening 42.
Further, according to an alternative to the described example, the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 may comprise a further opening in a lateral housing Wall opposite the lateral housing Wall facing the items packaging machine 20. Packages of items stored in the racks of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 may then be delivered from the vertical storage and retrieval lift system 4 via this further opening. The further opening may be provided as an alternative or complement to the main opening. According to one example, the rail 34 of the item transport device 24 may extend through this further opening so that the picking unit 32 may move through this further opening and deliver packages of items on the other side of the lateral wall.
Further, it should be clear for a person skilled in the art that the machine may be adapted for packaging items of different size and dimension relative to (circular) plates. For example, a plurality of flat rectangular items, which are not fragile, such as wooden boards, side units, or similar, for cabinets/shelves may be packaged via such a machine. Further, the machine is not limited to packaging a pile of items. A plurality of items may be arranged in a different manner than on top of each other, such as next to one another, in an initial state as input to the machine. According to a further example, single flat rectangular items, such as a shelf or a cabinet door may be packaged by the machine. According to a further example, a single elongated item, such as a leg for a table, may be packaged by the machine. According to a further example, a set of items, which may be of 23 different shapes and possibly jointly are adapted to form a piece of furniture, or part thereof, may first be arranged in a space-efficient way and then packaged jointly by the machine. The machine would be adapted in that the opening in the platform would have a shape and dimension matching the outer contours of such an item or set of items. Further, a plurality of movable members, such as piston-cylinder arrangements may be distributed along each long side of the opening for simultaneous actuation in the folding process.
The sheet of packaging material as described above may be formed by a corrugated cardboard. Such corrugated cardboard may comprise a wave shaped sheet interposed between two flat sheets. Such corrugated cardboard provides strength to allow for stacking of the items and to protect the package's contents. Further, it should be clear for a person skilled in the art that for less fragile items, such as wooden items (boards, cabinet panels, furniture legs etc), the packaging material may be formed by a single sheet (fluted or non-fluted) and/or a thinner structure than corrugated cardboard and it may not necessarily be provided with fold indications.

Claims (1)

1.Claims An arrangement (2) for handling items (3), wherein the arrangement comprises a vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) that comprises a first rack (6) that comprises a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction for storage of said items and a vertical lift (8) that is operable for positioning said items (3) on the shelves and retrieving said items from the shelves, wherein the arrangement (2) comprises an items packaging machine (20) adapted for folding at least one sheet of packaging material (22, 78, 84) around the item, wherein the items packaging machine (20) is positioned adjacent the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4), and wherein the arrangement comprises an item transport device (24) for transporting items between the items packaging machine (20) and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4). An arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) comprises a housing (44) that houses the first rack (6) and the vertical lift (8), wherein the housing (44) comprises a wall (46) facing the items packaging machine (20), wherein the wall (46) defines an opening (48), wherein the items transport device (24, 30, 32, 34) is adapted for transporting items bet\Neen the items packaging machine (20) and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) via the opening (48) in the wall (46). An arrangement according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) has an elongated shape in a cross section in a horizontal plane with two laterally extending ends (10, 12) defining the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a longitudinal direction and two longitudinally extending ends (14, 16) defining the vertical storage and retrieval lift system in a lateral direction, wherein the items packaging machine (20) is positioned adjacent a first end (10) of said laterally extending ends of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4), and wherein the item transport device (24) is adapted for transporting items between the items packaging machine (20) and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) via the first laterally extending end (10). An arrangement according to claims 2 and 3, wherein the opening (48) is provided in a lateral wall (46) defining the first laterally extending end (10). An arrangement according to claim 3 or 4, wherein the shelves in the first rack (6) are elongated with a longitudinal extension in parallel with one of the longitudinal ends of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4). An arrangement according to claim 5, wherein the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) comprises a second rack (18) with a plurality of shelves spaced in a vertical direction, wherein the shelves in the second rack are elongated with a longitudinal extension in parallel with one of the longitudinal ends of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4), wherein the second rack (18) is arranged at a distance from the first rack and wherein the vertical lift (8) is operable up and down between the first rack and the second rack. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the item transport device (24) comprises a picking unit (32) for picking an item and an elongated rail (34), wherein the rail (34) has an extension on either side of one end (10) of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4), wherein the picking unit (32) is moveable along the rail for transporting items between the items packaging machine (20) and the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4). An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) comprises an item entry and exit area (40), wherein the lift (8) is operable to collect an item positioned in the item entry and exit area (40) for storage in the rack (6) and leave an item from the rack (6) in the item entry and exit area (40). An arrangement according to claim 8, wherein the item transport device (24) has an extension inside the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) adjacent the item entry and exit area (40) for positioning items in the item entry and exit area (40) and/or collecting items from the item entry and exit area (40). An arrangement according to claim 8 or 9, wherein the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) further comprises a main opening (42) for entry of items for storage and/or collection of stored items, wherein the main opening (42) is in communication with item entry and exit area (40) and is open towards an end (14) of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) that is different from an end (10)of the vertical storage and retrieval lift system (4) facing the items packaging machine (20). An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the arrangement (2) comprises a first station (26) for receipt of packaging material (22) and a second station (28) for receipt of items (3) for packaging, wherein at least one of the first station (26) and the second station (28) are arranged adjacent to the items packaging machine (20), wherein the arrangement (2) comprises a device (32) for picking packaging material (22) from the first station (26), items (3) from the second station (28) and delivering the picked packaging material (22) and the items (3) to the items packaging machine (20), wherein the items packaging machine (20) is adapted for folding the packaging material (22) around the item (3) in a consecutive step. An arrangement according to any preceding claim, wherein the packaging machine (20) comprises a platform (56) having an upper surface (62) and an opening (64) in the upper surface, wherein the opening (64) is sized so that the item (3) to be packaged fits in the opening, wherein the machine (20) further comprises an item support surface (66) for supporting the item from below, wherein the item support surface (66) is arranged in said opening (64), and wherein the machine further comprises a device (68) for movement of the item support surface (66) relative to the upper surface (62) of the platform from an upper position to a lower position so as to cause at least one sheet of packaging material (22, 78, 84) having an extension that is larger than an extension of the opening (64) and which is arranged on top of the item support surface (66) and below the item to be packaged, to be at least partly drawn into the opening. An arrangement according to claim 12, wherein the packaging machine (20) comprises a folding arrangement (88) for folding the at least one sheet of packaging material around the item, wherein the folding arrangement (88) comprises a first folding structure (90) arranged on at least one side of the opening (64), wherein the first folding structure (90) is adapted to contact a flap portion (80, 82) of the at least one sheet of packaging material (78) adjacent a main portion (79) of the at least one sheet of packaging material that is adapted for receipt of said item so that the flap portion (80, 82) is folded around a lower edge of the item.
