Description

Technical field The present disclosure relates to a method of renovating a wet-room construction element, such as a floor, a wall, or a ceiling, and in particular of renovating a worn or damaged moisture-impermeable surfacing provided on such construction element so as to restore moisture-impermeability.
The disclosure further relates to a renovated wet-room construction element. The disclosure finds particular application in bathrooms, shower rooms, laundry rooms and other spaces wherein the construction elements may be subject to water spray.
Background Wet-room construction elements, such as floors, walls or ceilings, are found in rooms such as bathrooms, shower rooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and other rooms where one or more construction element may become subjected to water spray.
For example, in some applications, wet-room walls are typically provided by attaching wall-paper-like sheets of an impermeable web to a wall by means of glue. ln such cases the impermeable web provides an integrated sealing and decorative layer. Joints between the wall-paper like sheets may be sealed by application of a sealing compound or by welding. ln other applications, wet room walls are provided by applying a sealing layer to the surface of a wall, after which tiles, such as ceramic tiles or stone tiles, are attached to the sealing layer by means of a fixing compound. Joints between the tiles may be sealed by application of grout.
Regardless of which method is used to provide a wet-room wall, it is common that wet room walls fail so as to allow moisture to pass into the wall. Such failure may result from intentional piercing of the wall surfacing, e.g. when mounting items like shelves or shower head holders to the wall. Failure may also result from faulty installation, e.g. where the moisture-impermeable part of the surfacing was incorrectly installed. Failure may also result from unintentional relative movement of underlying wall elements, which may cause the moisture-impermeable part of the surfacing to crack.
Regardless of the type of wet-room construction element and regardless of the type of failure, common practice is to renovate the construction element by tearing down the old surfacing and applying a new surfacing.
However, this common practice is time consuming, thus causing the wet-room to be out of commission for some time during the renovation. The renovation procedure as such may also be costly.
Hence, there is a need for faster and less costly methods of renovating wet-room construction elements.
Summary lt is an object of the present disclosure to provide an improved method of renovating a wet-room construction element, such as a wall, a floor, or a ceiling. Particular objectives comprise providing a method which reduces the down-time of the wet-room and/or which reduces the cost of the renovation.
The invention is defined by the appended independent claims, with embodiments being set forth in the appended dependent claims, in the following description and in the attached drawings.
According to a first aspect of the present inventive concept there is provided a method of renovating a wet-room construction element, the wet- room construction element comprising a construction element supporting a first moisture-impermeable surfacing, the method comprising: attaching an adhesive sealing sheet to an exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing by means of a first adhesive surface of said adhesive sealing sheet, and attaching a decorative layer to a second surface of said adhesive sealing sheet.
By the term “construction element” is here meant any indoor construction element of a building. By way of example, a construction element may be, but is not limited to, a wall, a floor, or a ceiling. The construction element may be made of any suitable construction material, such as concrete, wood or board material, which may be formed as a plywood, chipboard, wood fiber board (such as MDF or HDF) or a sandwich panel, which may comprise a core of a mineral material sandwiched between sheets of paper, cardboard, non-woven or woven fibers or threads. lt should be understood that the first moisture-impermeable surfacing may provide at least one sealing layer on a surface of the construction element. By way of example, the sealing layer of the first moisture- impermeable surfacing may be a separate sealing layer, or it may be an integrated sealing and decorative layer.
According to an embodiment, the adhesive sealing sheet and the decorative layer together form a second moisture-impermeable surfacing.
The adhesive sealing sheet provides a sealing, waterproofing effect. Given as a non-limiting example, the adhesive sealing sheet may comprise a barrier layer of a material such as polyethylene.
Once the adhesive sealing sheet has been attached to the exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing, the first adhesive surface is arranged in between two sealing layers substantially preventing air from reaching the first adhesive surface. A conventioal glue enclosed between the two sealing layers would not be allowed to cure. Thus, it is surprising that a strong enough adhesion may be provided by the first adhesive surface, to firmly attach to the exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfaceing. Further, the adhesion is strong enough for the adhesive sealing sheet to remain attached onto the exposed surface of the first moisture- impermeable surfacing even once a second decorative layer has been attached to the second surface.
An advantage with the method defined above is that it provides a quick and reliable way of renovating a wet-room construction element, such as a wall, a floor or a ceiling, so as to restore its moisture-impermeable properties. The method may reduce or even eliminate the need for tearing down the old surfacing prior to applying a new surfacing. By the method defined above, renovation may be performed easier and quicker, which also reduces the time during which the wet-room needs to be out of Commission due to the renovation.
Another advantage with the method defined above is that it provides a less costly way of renovating a wet-room construction element.
According to an embodiment, the adhesive sealing sheet is a single- sided adhesive sealing sheet, and wherein said attaching the decorative layer comprises attaching the decorative layer to the second surface of said single-sided adhesive sealing sheet by means of a fixing layer.

According to an embodiment, said double-sided adhesive sealing sheet is supplied with an adhesive protection sheet, and wherein the method further comprises: subsequent to said attaching the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet to an exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing, removing the adhesive protection sheet, so as to expose the second adhesive surface of said double-sided adhesive sealing sheet.
According to an embodiment, said attaching an adhesive sealing sheet to an exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing comprises: arranging, onto the exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing, a first sealing sheet edge and a second sealing sheet edge alongside one another, such that a joint is formed therebetween; wherein at least one of the first sealing sheet edge and the second sealing sheet edge is comprised by said adhesive sealing sheet. lt is conceivable that the first sealing sheet edge and the second sealing sheet edge may both be comprised by said adhesive sealing sheet.
The method may comprise attaching a single adhesive sealing sheet to an exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing. Alternatively, the method may comprise attaching two or more adhesive sealing sheets to an exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing. By way of example, in case of attaching two or more adhesive sealing sheets, the two or more adhesive sealing sheets may be arranged alongside one another such that a first sealing sheet edge of a first adhesive sealing sheet and a second sealing sheet edge of an adjacent second adhesive sealing sheet form a joint therebetween. lt should be understood that a joint may be formed by two sealing sheet edges meeting. Alternatively, a joint may be formed by two sealing sheet edges overlapping, or by two sealing sheet edges forming a s|ight gap therebetween.
According to an embodiment, the method further comprises attaching, onto the second surface, a sealing tape across the joint formed between the first sealing sheet edge and the second sealing sheet edge, thereby providing a sea|ed joint between the first sealing sheet edge and the second sealing sheet edge. ln particular, the sealing tape may be attached so as to overlap both sealing sheet edges between which the joint is formed.
According to an embodiment, said first moisture-impermeable surfacing is pierced in at least one location, so as to enable moisture to penetrate past the first moisture-impermeable surfacing.
According to an embodiment, the first moisture-impermeable surfacing comprises a first sealing layer, a first decorative layer and optionally a first fixing layer.
According to an embodiment, the first moisture-impermeable surfacing comprises an integrated sealing and decorative layer.
According to an embodiment, said attaching a second decorative layer comprises attaching a plurality of tiles to said second surface of said adhesive sealing sheet.
According to an embodiment, the method further comprises providing a joint seal between at least some of said tiles.
According to an embodiment, said attaching a second decorative layer comprises attaching a second integrated sealing and decorative layer to said second surface of said adhesive sealing sheet.
According to an embodiment, the adhesive sealing sheet comprises a barrier layer, in particular a polyolefin layer, such as polyethylene.
According to a second aspect of the present inventive concept there is provided a renovated wet-room construction element, comprising: a construction element supporting a first moisture-impermeable surfacing, an adhesive sealing sheet attached to an exposed surface of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing by means of a first adhesive surface of said adhesive sealing sheet, and a decorative layer attached to a second surface of said adhesive sealing sheet.
According to an embodiment, the adhesive sealing sheet is a single- sided adhesive sealing sheet, and wherein the decorative layer is attached to said second surface of said single-sided adhesive sealing sheet by means of a fixing layer.
According to an embodiment, the adhesive sealing sheet is a double- sided adhesive sealing sheet comprising a second adhesive surface on the second surface, and wherein the decorative layer is attached to said double-sided adhesive sealing sheet by means of the second adhesive surface of said double-sided adhesive sealing sheet.
According to an embodiment, said first moisture-impermeable surfacing is pierced in at least one location, so as to enable moisture to penetrate past the first moisture-impermeable surfacing.

A sheet length may be about 2- 50 m, in particular about 2-5 m, about 5-10 m, about 10-20 m, about 20-30 m, about 30-40 m or about 40-50 m.
The double-sided adhesive sealing sheet may be provided with a sheet thickness in of 0.5-3 mm, preferably 1-2 mm, and more preferably 1.5 mm. ln addition to the adhesive feature, the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet further provides a sealing, waterproofing effect. Given as a non-limiting example, the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet may comprise a barrier layer of a material such as polyethylene.
A barrier layer may comprise a polyolefin film presenting a thickness of about 0.05-0.25 mm, preferably about 0.1 -0.2 mm. The barrier layer may present a vapor diffusion resistance (Z value according to EN ISO 12572 75/10 °/> rh) in the area of 2,000,000 to 16,000,000.
By way of further example, one type of double-sided adhesive sealing sheet suitable for being used for renovating wet-room construction elements according to the present inventive concept is provided by llligo AB, Ängelholm, Sweden. lt should be understood, however, that the intended use of the product of llligo AB is quite different from the present inventive concept.
When renovating the existing wall 1, one or more portions of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 are attached to the exposed surface 134 of the first moisture-impermeable surfacing 1 on the existing wall 10 by means of the first adhesive surface 211.
Once a relevant area of the existing wall 10 has been covered by the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21, the adhesive protecting layer 213, if any, may be removed so as to expose the second adhesive surface 212.
Where two or more portions of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 are used, a sealing tape (which may be provided in the form of a double-sided adhesive tape) may be used to provide a sealed joint between the adhesive sealing sheets 21. ln particular, double-sided adhesive sealing sheets 21 may be arranged in a non-overlapping manner, with edges of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheets 21 meeting in a common plane. One or more strips of sealing tape may be applied along and overlapping such joints between adjacent adhesive sealing sheets 21, subsequent to removing the adhesive protecting layer 213, if any, so as to expose the second adhesive surface 212. The sealing tape may be provided as a roll of material having a width of about 2-15 cm, preferably about 4-10 cm, and more preferably 5- 8 cm. By way of further example, sealing tape may be applied at corners and/or at edges of the relevant area of the construction element to be renovated. By the present arrangement improved sealing may be provided at joints, corners and edges of the renovation may be provided.
A plurality of tiles, such as ceramic tiles, stone tiles or other tiles which are adapted for use in wet environments, may be attached to the double- sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 by being pressed against the second adhesive surface 212. lf needed, a sealing or filling compound, such as grout, may be arranged in joints between the tiles. After such joint filling has been 11 completed, the renovated wall has been completed, as is illustrated in fig. 1b, wherein the second set of tiles now provide an exposed wall surface 23 and wherein the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 provides a sealing layer. lt serves to mention that, in the case of using a single-sided adhesive sealing sheet instead of a double-sided adhesive sealing sheet, the decorative layer may be attached to the single-sided adhesive sealing sheet by means of a fixing layer provided between the second surface of the single- sided adhesive sealing sheet and the decorative layer. By way of example, the fixing layer may comprise glue or cement.
Fig. 2a schematically illustrates an exploded sectional view of a wall renovation, wherein an existing wall 10 comprises a wall surface 101, and wherein the wall 10 is covered by an integrated sealing and decorative layer 15, such as a wet-room carpet, which is attached to the wall surface 101 by means of a glue layer 14 and which provides the existing exposed surface 151.
The integrated sealing and decorative layer 15 and the glue layer 14 together form a first moisture-impermeable surfacing 1 on the wall 10.
Similar to figs 1a-1 b, a renovation assembly forming a second moisture-impermeable surfacing 2 is provided, comprising a double-sided adhesive sheet 21 and a second decorative layer 22, comprising a second set of tiles 221, 222, and optionally a joint material 223 for covering and optionally sealing joints between the tiles 221, 222. The joint material 223 may thus be a grout, a sealing compound or a sealing strip.
Hence, the renovation procedure may be identical to that described with reference to figs. 1a-1 b.
Fig. 3a schematically illustrates an exploded sectional view of a wall renovation, wherein an existing wall 10 comprises a wall surface 101, and wherein the wall 10 is covered by a surfacing of a tile material, such as ceramic tiles, stone tiles or synthetic tiles, which provides the existing exposed surface 134 of a first moisture-impermeable surfacing 1 on the wall 10. ln figs 3a-3b, a renovation assembly forming a second moisture- impermeable surfacing 2 comprises a double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 12 and a second decorative layer 24, comprising an integrated sealing and decorative layer 24, such as a wet-room carpet.
The double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 is applied to the existing exposed surface 134, just as described with reference to fig. 1a.
The integrated sealing and decorative layer 24 are attached to the exposed second adhesive surface 212 of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21. Any joints between pieces of integrated sealing and decorative layer 24 may be sealed by application of sealing compound or by welding, such that an outwardly exposed surface of the integrated sealing and decorative layer 24 provides an exposed wall surface 241 and the double- sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 provides an additional sealing layer.
Fig. 4a schematically illustrates an exploded sectional view of a wall renovation, wherein an existing wall 10 comprises a wall surface 101, and wherein the wall 10 is covered by a first integrated sealing and decorative layer 15, such as a wet-room carpet, which is attached to the wall surface 101 by means of a glue layer 14. The integrated sealing and decorative layer 15 and the glue layer 14 together form a first moisture-impermeable surfacing 1 on the wall 10. ln figs 4a-4b, a renovation assembly forming a second moisture- impermeable surfacing 2 comprises a double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 and a second decorative layer 24, comprising a second integrated sealing and decorative layer 24, such as a wet-room carpet.
The double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 is applied to the existing exposed surface 151, just as described with reference to fig. 1a.
The second integrated sealing and decorative layer 24 is attached to the exposed second adhesive surface 212 of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21. Any joints between pieces of the integrated sealing and decorative layer 24 may be sealed by application of sealing compound or by welding, such that an outwardly exposed surface of the integrated sealing and decorative layer 24 provides an exposed wall surface 241 and the double- sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 provides an additional sealing layer. ln the above, the inventive concept has mainly been described with reference to a limited number of examples. However, as is readily 13 appreciated by a person skilled in the art, other examples than the ones disclosed above are equally possible within the scope of the inventive concept, as defined by the appended claims.
Prior to the application of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21, a step of cleaning the exposed surface 134, 151 may be recommended, so as to remove grease, scale and other residues that may negatively affect the adhesion of the double-sided adhesive sealing sheet 21 to the exposed surface 134, 151. lt serves to mention that, for any of the embodiments of the present inventive concept, the option of installing one or more moisture sensors when performing the method of renovating a wet-room construction element is equally applicable. A moisture sensor configured for detection of liquid and/or humidity in the renovated wet-room construction element may be installed and hidden in the construction, for example between the first moisture- impermeable surfacing and the second moisture-impermeable surfacing. By using, e.g. a hand-held measuring unit, brought into close proximity to the moisture sensor, the moisture level may be wirelessly read by the measuring unit, thereby eliminating the need for opening up a hole in the renovated construction for insertion of a moisture probe. Such a moisture sensor is described in detail in WO2018153885A1. lt is further understood that, while the concepts presented herein find their major application for renovating damaged or worn moisture-impermeable surfacings, it is also possible to use them for redecorating an existing and fully functional moisture-impermeable surfacing to change its appearance.
