Description
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS AND CABLES FOR MILITARY APPLICATIONS Technical field 1. 1. id="p-1"
id="p-1"
[0001] The present invention relates generally to electrical conductors. Theinvention also relates to electrical cables. Specifically, electrical conductors and cables with reduced electromagnetic field.
Background art 2. 2. id="p-2"
id="p-2"
[0002] Electrical conductors come in many different forms. Typically, it is theintended use of the conductor that determines the design of an electrical conductor.Some conductors are designed for power distribution, others are designed fortransmission of signals such as telecommunications signals as well as for otherpurposes. Furthermore, electrical conductors can be manufactured from manydifferent materials such as copper, aluminum, steel or nickel. Typically, two or more conductors are joined to form a cable. 3. 3. id="p-3"
id="p-3"
[0003] An electrical current running through a conductor causes it to radiate anelectromagnetic field. This electromagnetic field can negatively affect equipment inthe proximity of the cable, which can limit for example how closely togetherconductors or cables can be arranged. Therefore, regardless of the type of conductoror cable, it is typically desired that the radiated electromagnetic field is low. Often,this is achieved by providing shielding components which surround the entire length of the conductor. 4. 4. id="p-4"
id="p-4"
[0004] An alternative to providing shielding components is disclosed in US Patent9,953,737. The patent discloses a conductor and a cable having an aluminum coresurrounded by copper wires which has the effect of reducing the electromagneticfield. However, there are still many areas of technology where standardizeddimensions of electrical cables are commonly used, where such a conductor needsto be optimized in order to display a sufficiently reduced electromagnetic field. . . id="p-5"
id="p-5"
[0005] Therefore, there is still a need for conductors and cables with a reducedelectromagnetic field, which are optimized for standardized dimensions. 6. 6. id="p-6"
id="p-6"
[0006] Conductors and cables are used by national military and defenses all overthe world for the purpose of power distribution and/or communication. Having to stretch vast distances without interfering with, or being interfered with, puts highdemands on the low emission of the electromagnetic field of the conductors andCables. 7. 7. id="p-7"
id="p-7"
[0007] Therefore, there is a need for conductors and cables adapted for use inmilitary application, having a reduced electromagnetic field.
Summag of invention[0008] An object of the present invention is to provide optimized electricalconductors and cables for military applications. 9. 9. id="p-9"
id="p-9"
[0009] The invention is based on the insight, that the reduction of theelectromagnetic field can be optimized for certain dimensions of conductors when the ratio between aluminum and copper lies within a certain range. . . id="p-10"
id="p-10"
[0010] According to the invention, there is provided an electrical conductor for usein military applications comprising a central aluminum wire, and a plurality of copperwires surrounding the central aluminum wire, characterized in that a cross-sectionalarea of the conductor is substantially 6 mm2 and 11.12 % - 11.32 % of the cross-sectional area is the central aluminum wire and the rest is the plurality of copper wires. 11. 11. id="p-11"
id="p-11"
[0011] Having said cross-sectional area of 6 mm2 occupied by this range ofaluminum and copper, reduces the electromagnetic field more than using anotherrange. The technical effect is thus achieved by the combination of said cross- sectional are and said amount of aluminum and copper wire. 12. 12. id="p-12"
id="p-12"
[0012] ln an exemplary embodiment, there is provided an electrical cablecomprising at least one 6 mm2 electrical conductor, a jacket surrounding eachelectrical conductor, a filling material, and a binder surrounding the conductors andthe filling material. 13. 13. id="p-13"
id="p-13"
[0013] ln an exemplary embodiment, there is provided an electrical cable, comprising two 6 mm2 electrical conductors. 14. 14. id="p-14"
id="p-14"
[0014] ln an exemplary embodiment, there is provided an electrical cable,comprising three 6 mm2 electrical conductors.
