Description

MOUNTING DEVICE FOR MOUNTING FRAME RINGS AROUND A WASH PRESS DRUM CORE AND AMETHOD FOR MOUNTING FRAME RINGS TECHNICAL FIELD The invention relates to the field of wash press drums having a cylindrical core provided withlongitudinal supporting ribs attached to the envelope surface of the cylindrical core, wherein circularframe rings are mounted onto the supporting ribs concentrically around the cylindrical core, and wherein permeable metal sheets are attached onto the circular frame rings.BACKGROUND Apparatuses for washing and/or dewatering of ce||u|ose pulp are known in the art. Many differenttypes of washing apparatuses are available, some of which are based on press washing (so-called wash presses) and comprise means for pressing the pulp to remove liquid.
The twin-roll press is a well-known type of such a wash press, which is provided with two counter-rotating drums or rolls with perforated outer surfaces. A web of pulp is formed on the respective drumand is transported in the direction of rotation in a vat partially surrounding the drums, to the so-calledpress nip between the drums. The liquid removed from the pulp, i.e. the filtrate, passes through theperforated roll surface in a radial inwards direction and is led to the ends of the press roll, where it isoutput. Washing liquid or other treatment liquid may be supplied to the pulp web through inlets in thevat. The twin-roll press uses displacement washing, where dirty liquid (liquor) in the pulp is replacedby cleaner wash liquid added to the vat, and pressing, and where the dirty liquid is pressed (squeezed) out from the pulp, in particular at the press nip.
The drums for such wash presses normally comprise a cylindrical core having an envelope surface, aplurality of elongated supporting ribs attached to the envelope surface, the ribs extending in alongitudinal direction of the cylindrical core and being distributed around the circumference of thecylindrical core. On these supporting ribs, frame rings are attached along the length of the drum suchthat they are arranged concentrically with the cylindrical core. One or more permeable or perforatedmetal sheet is/are attached onto the outermost edges of the circular frame rings to form an envelopesurface of the cylindrical drum as a whole. Pressed out liquid passes through the permeable metalsheet, radially inwardly past the frame rings, and is transported away from the drums via the longitudinal channels formed between the supporting ribs.
The wash press drums of today are normally manufactured by firstly welding the supporting ribs ontothe cylindrical core. Secondly, frame ring sections are formed where a plurality of frame rings are welded onto flat metal bars arranged on the inside and extending transversely to the frame rings, where after the frame rings sections are shrunk onto the supporting ribs with each metal bar arrangedonto and in parallel with corresponding supporting ribs. Finally, the permeable or perforated metalsheet(s) is/are shrunk onto the frame rings. Such a known manufacturing method is described and i||ustrated in figures 1-2 of WO2006068569.
One problem with such a manufacturing process is that it may be difficult to provide consistent weldsin the frame ring assemblies which may cause unpredictable strength of the drum as a whole. Anotherproblem is that the height of the frame rings may need to be lower than desired since high frame rings makes it difficult to provide access for the welding equipment between the rings.SUMMARY An object of the invention is to solve or improve on at least some of the problems mentioned above in the background section.
These and other objects are achieved by the present invention by means of a mounting device formounting circular frame rings and a method for mounting circular frame rings according to the independent claims.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a mounting device for mounting aplurality of circular frame rings concentrically around a cylindrical core of a wash press drum ontosupporting ribs attached to an envelope surface of the cylindrical core, the supporting ribs extendingradially and in a longitudinal direction of the cylindrical core. More specifically, the circular frame ringsare mounted with their inner edge directly or indirectly onto the radially outermost edges of thesupporting ribs. ln other words, the inner edges of the circular frame rings are attached either directlyto the radially outermost edges of the supporting ribs or indirectly with one or more intermediateelements there between. The supporting ribs in turn are attached with their radially innermost edgeonto the envelope surface of the cylindrical core. The mounting device comprises a holding elementhaving a plurality of parallel grooves or recesses, which preferably are distributed at uniform distancefrom each other, the grooves or recesses (or at least one or each groove or recess) having apredetermined width to allow a radially inner or outer edge of one of the plurality of circular framerings to be received therein. ln other words, the width of the grooves (as seen in the longitudinaldirection of the cylindrical core when mounted thereto) is adapted to the width or thickness of the frame rings such that the frame rings are recessed into the holding element when connected thereto.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a frame ring assembly comprising aplurality of circular frame rings adapted to be mounted concentrically around a cylindrical core of for example a wash press drum onto (the radially outer edge of) supporting ribs attached to an envelope surface of the cylindrical core, and at least one mounting device according to the first aspect of theinvention or embodiments thereof. As explained above, the circular frame rings may be mounted or attached directly or indirectly to the supporting ribs.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided cylindrical drum for a wash press, thecylindrical drum comprising a cylindrical core having an envelope surface, elongated supporting ribsbeing attached to the envelope surface, the ribs extending radially and in a longitudinal direction ofthe cylindrical core and being distributed around the circumference of the cylindrical core, and a framering assembly according to the second aspect of the invention or embodiments thereof. The circularframe rings are arranged concentrically around the cylindrical core and its supporting ribs, preferablyat uniform distance from each other, and are attached to the supporting ribs, and at least onepermeable metal sheet is attached onto the circular frame rings concentrically with the envelopesurface radially outside the frame rings to form an envelope surface of the cylindrical drum as a whole. The supporting ribs may be distributed at uniform distance from each other in the circumferentialdirection of the core. Each or at least one holding element of the at least one mounting device may becircumferentially aligned with a corresponding supporting rib and is thereby sandwiched between thecircular frame rings and the corresponding supporting ribs. ln this manner, the holding elements areheld in place after the corresponding securing devices are removed, and thus form part of thecylindrical drum. Each or at least one elongated supporting rib may have a T-shaped cross section, withthe top/ceiling of the T-shape arranged in abutment with the frame rings or holding elements. The circular frame rings are typically distributed along the whole length of the core.
According to a fourth aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for mounting circular framerings concentrically around a cylindrical core of a wash press drum using at least one mounting deviceaccording to the first aspect of the invention or embodiments thereof, the cylindrical core comprisingsupporting ribs extending in a longitudinal direction of the cylindrical core and being attached radiallyextending to an envelope surface of the cylindrical core distributed around the circumference thereof. The method comprises securing the plurality of circular frame rings to the holding element of themounting device using the securing device of the mounting device, placing the at least one mountingdevice with thereto secured circular frame rings concentrically around the cylindrical core and itssupporting ribs, attaching the circular frame rings (directly or indirectly) to the supporting ribs andreleasing and removing the securing device of the at least one mounting device. The circular framerings are typically distributed along the whole length of the core. The circular frame rings may be attached to said supporting ribs by means of shrinking.
According to a fifth aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for manufacturing a cylindricaldrum for a wash press, the method comprising providing a cylindrical core having an enve|ope surface, attaching e|ongated supporting ribs onto the enve|ope surface, such that the ribs extend radially andin a |ongitudina| direction of the cylindrical core and are distributed around the circumference of thecylindrical core, mounting circu|ar frame rings (directly or indirectly) onto the supporting ribs using themethod according to the fourth aspect of the invention or embodiments thereof, and attaching at leastone permeable metal sheet onto the circu|ar frame rings concentrically with the enve|ope surfaceradially outside the frame rings to form an enve|ope surface of the cylindrical drum as a whole. Eache|ongated supporting rib may have a T-shaped cross section, with the top/ceiling of the T-shape arranged in abutment with the frame rings or holding elements. lt is understood that the supporting ribs normally have a substantially greater height (as seen in a radialdirection of the core/drum) than width/thickness (as seen in a tangential/circumferential direction ofthe core/drum). ln the same manner, it is understood that the frame rings normally have a substantiallygreater height (as seen in the radial direction of the core/drum) than width (as seen in the axialdirection of the core/drum). lt is further understood that the circu|ar frame rings and the supportingribs, when mounted together, are typically orthogonally disposed relative each other. lt is furtherunderstood that the holding element typically has an e|ongated shape, being substantially longer (asseen in the |ongitudina|/axial direction of the drum/frame ring assembly) than wide (as seen in thecircumferential/peripheral direction of the drum/frame ring assembly). The holding element typicallyalso has a greater width than thickness/height (as seen in the radial direction of the drum/frame ring assembly).
The invention is based on the insight that attachment of the circu|ar frame rings to the supporting ribsnot only fixates the frame rings thereto, but also holds the frame rings in position relative each other, which means that the circu|ar frame rings do not need to be fixated relative each other by means ofwelding. Shrinking attachment of the circu|ar frame rings have proven effective to hold the frame ringsin position relative each other, but other attachment methods are foreseeable within the scope of the invention.
The mounting device according to the first aspect of the invention is advantageous since it holds thecircu|ar frame rings are in position relative each other prior to and during attachment to the supportingribs and thus facilitates the omission of the welding step during manufacturing of the cylindrical drum. After the attachment, the mounting device can be wholly or partially removed and re-used for mounting another frame ring assembly. The same advantage applies to the frame ring assembly according to the second aspect of the invention and the cylindrical drum according to the third aspect of the invention. ln embodiments of a mounting device according to the first aspect of the invention, the mountingdevice further comprises a securing device being configured to releasably secure the holding elementto said plurality of circular frame rings. The securing device may comprise a securing element and atleast one connection device adapted to releasably connect the holding element and the securingelement at a distance from each other to allow the plurality of circular frame rings to be securedtherebetween. The securing element preferably has a length adapted to the length of the holdingelement such that the edges (as seen in the radial direction) of all frame rings are in abutment withboth the holding element and the securing element. For instance, the securing element may be a bar-shaped element having the same length as the holding element. The connection device may be anytype of connection means known in the art and preferably comprises a screw or bolt member extending between the holding element and the securing element. ln embodiments of a frame ring assembly according to the second aspect of the invention, thepredetermined width of the grooves correspond to the width of said radially inner or outer edge ofsaid circular frame rings to prevent relative rotation between the frame rings and the holdingelements. ln other words, the width of the grooves is not only adapted to the width or thickness of theframe rings, but is machined to closely correspond to the width of the frame rings such that relativerotation around a radially directed axis, i.e. an axis being perpendicular to the axial direction of the frame rings, is prevented. ln embodiments of a frame ring assembly according to the second aspect ofthe invention, the pluralityof parallel grooves of each or at least one holding element have a predetermined shape, and whereineach or at least one circular frame ring has a radially inner or outer edge machined to correspond toand engage with said predetermined shape. Such engagement may be achieved by means of one of aparallel groove and a corresponding radially inner or outer edge of a circular frame ring being providedwith at least one protrusion and the other is provided with at least one corresponding recess adaptedto engage with said at least one protrusion to prevent relative movement between the frame ring andthe holding element in the circumferential direction of the frame ring. Such embodiments areadvantageously combined with the above-mentioned embodiment where the width of each groovecorresponds to the width of said radially inner or outer edge of said circular frame rings, thereby preventing relative circumferential movement and relative rotation. ln embodiments of a frame ring assembly according to the second aspect of the invention, each or at least one circular frame ring is provided with at least one recess or groove adapted to receive a holding element therein, said at least one recess or groove having a length in the circumferential/tangentialdirection of the frame ring corresponding to the width of the holding element, i.e. the length of theholding element in the circumferential/tangential direction of the frame ring, to prevent relativemovement between the frame rings and the holding elements in the circumferential direction of theframe rings. Such embodiments are advantageously combined with the above-mentionedembodiment where the width of the grooves correspond to the width of said radially inner or outeredge of said circular frame rings, thereby preventing relative circumferential movement and relative rotation. ln embodiments of a method according to the fourth aspect of the invention, the placing comprisesplacing said at least one mounting device with thereto secured circular frame rings concentricallyaround said cylindrical core and its supporting ribs with each or at least one holding element of said atleast one mounting device circumferentially aligned with corresponding supporting rib(s), and whereinsaid attaching comprises attaching said circular frame rings to said supporting ribs with each or at leastone holding element sandwiched between said circular frame rings and one of said supporting ribs. The holding elements thus become part of the finished cylindrical drum. ln this embodiment, thecircular frame rings may be considered indirectly attached/mounted to the supporting ribs since theholding element is sandwiched between the frame rings and the supporting ribs. The circular framerings and the holding elements are preferably attached to said supporting ribs by means of shrinking.ln embodiments, the method comprises initially placing (by means of axial displacement) the at leastone mounting device with thereto secured circular frame rings concentrically around said cylindricalcore and its supporting ribs with each or at least one holding element of said at least one mountingdevice circumferentially between two adjacent supporting ribs, wherein the shrinking comprisesheating the circular frame rings in this position, whereafter the placing comprises rotating the heatedcircular frame rings such that each or at least one holding element of said at least one mounting devicecircumferentially align with corresponding supporting rib(s), whereafter the frame rings and at leastone mounting device are allowed to cool off to shrinkingly attach to the supporting ribs.|nembodiments of a method according to the fourth aspect of the invention, the placing comprisesplacing said at least one mounting device with thereto secured circular frame rings concentricallyaround said cylindrical core and its supporting ribs with each or at least one holding element of said atleast one mounting device circumferentially between two adjacent supporting ribs, said methodfurther comprising, after said releasing and removing, removing each or at least one holding element. At least one, or each, of the holding elements are thus not part of the finished cylindrical drum. ln thisembodiment, at least one of the circular frame rings are directly attached/mounted to the supporting ribs. The circular frame rings are preferably attached to said supporting ribs by means of shrinking. The circular frame rings may have a varying inner diameter, for example having a greater diameter atangular positions corresponding to those of the supporting ribs. This allows the circular frame rings tobe placed concentrically around the cylindrical core and its supporting ribs (by means of axialdisplacement) with circular frame rings having its portions of greater inner diameter angularly alignedwith the supporting ribs, whereafter the circular frame rings may be rotated such that its inner edgemakes contact with the supporting ribs. This allows the shrinking to be performed by means of heatingthe circular frame prior to rotating the circular frame rings to make contact with the supporting ribs, whereafter the frame rings and at least one mounting device are allowed to cool off to shrinkingly attach to the supporting ribs.
The features of the embodiments described above are combinable in any practically realizable way toform embodiments having combinations of these features. Further, all features and advantages ofembodiments described above with reference to the first and second aspects of the invention may beapplied in corresponding embodiments of the third, fourth and fifth aspects of the invention and vice VefSa.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Above discussed and other aspects of the present invention will now be described in more detail using the appended drawings, which show presently preferred embodiments of the invention, wherein:fig. 1 shows a prior art complete cylindrical drum for a wash press; fig. 2 shows the cylindrical drum of fig. 1 without the circular frame rings and permeable metal sheets; fig. 3 shows a prior art frame ring assembly adapted to be attached onto the supporting ribs shown in fig. 2; fig. 4 shows an embodiment of a mounting device according to the first aspect of the invention; fig. 5 shows an embodiment of a frame ring assembly according to the second aspect of the invention;fig. 6 shows a cross section view of a holding element the mounting device in fig. 4; fig. 7 shows a side view of a holding element of the mounting device in fig. 4 when engaged with a corresponding frame ring; fig. 7b shows a side view of alternative embodiments of a holding element and a frame ring when engaged with each other; fig. 8 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of a cylindrical drum according to the third aspect of the invention; fig. 9 shows an alternative embodiment of a mounting device according to the first aspect of the invention; fig. 10 shows an alternative embodiment of a frame ring assembly according to the second aspect of the invention; fig. 11 shows an alternative embodiment of a cylindrical drum according to the third aspect of the invention, shown without permeable metal sheets; fig. 12 shows a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method according to the fourth aspect of the invention, and fig. 13 shows a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method according to the fifth aspect of the invention.DETAILED DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 shows a prior art complete cylindrical drum for a wash press. Themounting device 1 comprises a bar-shaped holding element 7 having a plurality of parallel grooves 8distributed at uniform distance from each other, each groove having a predetermined width to allowa radially inner edge 9 of one of the plurality of circular frame rings to be received therein (see fig. 5).The mounting device further comprises a securing device 10 configured to releasably secure theholding element 7 to a plurality of circular frame rings. The securing device 10 comprises a securingelement 11 having the same length as the holding element, and at least one connection device in theform of a bolt member 12 adapted to releasably connect the holding element 7 and the securingelement 11 at a distance from each other to allow a plurality of circular frame rings to be securedtherebetween. The holding element and the securing element can both be described as bar-shaped elements, but only the holding element is provided with grooves.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment of a frame ring assembly 13 according to the second aspect of theinvention which comprises a plurality of circular frame rings 2 and a plurality of mounting devices 1 ofthe same type shown in fig. 4. The mounting devices are distributed around the circumference of theframe rings at uniform distance from each other. The predetermined width of each groove 8 (as shownin fig. 4) corresponds to the width of said radially inner edge of the circular frame rings 2 to preventrelative rotation (around a radial axis) between the frame rings and the holding elements 7 of the mounting devices 1.
Fig. 6 shows a cross section view of a holding element of the mounting device in fig. 4, and fig. 7a showsa side view of the holding element ofthe mounting device in fig. 4 when engaged with a correspondingframe ring 2 (only partly shown in fig. 6). As can be seen in figs. 6 and 7a, the groove 8 of the holdingelement 7 (as well as the other not shown grooves) has a predetermined shape, and the circular framering 2 (as well as the other not shown rings) has a radially inner edge 9 machined to correspond toand engage with said predetermined shape. More specifically, the groove 8 comprises protrusions 8',8" and a recess 8"' while the radially inner edge 9 of the circular frame ring is provided with acorresponding protrusion 9' and recesses 9", 9"'. These recesses and protrusions prevent relativemovement between the frame ring and the holding element in the circumferential direction of theframe ring. lt is understood that the illustrated protrusions and recesses are only exemplary, and thatmany other shapes, number of, and combinations of protrusions and recesses are possible within the scope of the invention.
Fig. 7b shows a side view of alternative embodiments of a holding element 7' and a frame ring 2' when engaged with each other. Fig. 7b thus shows parts on an alternative frame ring 2' provided with recesses 2" (only one shown in the figure) to receive a holding element 7' therein (only one shown inthe figure), each recess 2" having a length in the circumferential/tangential direction of the frame ringcorresponding to the width of the holding element 7', i.e. the length of the holding element in thecircumferential/tangential direction of the frame ring, to prevent relative movement between theframe rings and the holding elements in the circumferential direction of the frame rings. ln otherwords, both the holding element 7' and the frame ring 2' are provided with recesses/grooves whichthereby prevent relative movement between the holding elements and the frame rings both in thecircumferential and the axial/longitudinal direction. The holding element 7' corresponds to the holdingelement 7 in fig. 4 except that the bottom of each groove is flat and thus not provided with recesses/protrusions as shown in figs. 5-6.
Fig. 8 shows a perspective view of parts of an embodiment of a cylindrical drum according to the thirdaspect of the invention comprising a cylindrical core 3 having an envelope surface 6, elongatedsupporting ribs 5 being attached to the envelope surface, the ribs extending radially and in alongitudinal direction of the cylindrical core and being distributed around the circumference of thecylindrical core, and a plurality of frame ring assemblies of the type shown in fig. 5 (only one is seen inthe figure). Permeable metal sheets 14 are attached onto the circular frame rings 2 concentrically withthe envelope surface 6 radially outside the frame rings to form an envelope surface of the cylindricaldrum as a whole. The supporting ribs 5 are distributed at uniform distance from each other in thecircumferential direction of the core. Each holding element 7 is circumferentially aligned with acorresponding supporting rib 5 and is sandwiched between the circular frame rings 2 and thecorresponding supporting ribs. The circular frame rings ofthe frame rings assemblies are thus indirectlyattached/mounted to the supporting ribs 5. The frame rings assemblies are distributed along the wholelength of the core such that the frame rings are uniformly distributed. Fig. 8 can also be used toillustrate an alternative embodiment, where the supporting ribs have a T-shaped cross section and ref.7 forms the top of the supporting ribs. ln such an alternative embodiment, the holding elements have been removed in the same manner as discussed below with reference to figs. 9-11.
Fig. 9 shows an alternative embodiment of a mounting device 101 according to the first aspect of theinvention. The mounting device 101 differs from the embodiment in fig. 4 in that it comprises analternatively shaped elongated holding element 107 having a half-circle shaped cross-section, wherethe plurality of parallel grooves/slots 108 are formed in the curved upper surface thereof. Themounting device 101 is adapted to be removed after the frame rings have been attached to thesupporting ribs, as explained below, and can therefore be allowed to have a greater thickness anddeeper grooves/slots than the embodiment in fig. 4. The bottoms of the grooves/slots may be provided with recesses/protrusions in the same way as for the mounting device shown in figs. 5-6. Fig. 9 also shows the securing device 110 comprising a securing element 111 and a plurality of connection devices112 adapted to releasably connect the holding element 107 and the securing element 111 at a distance from each other to allow a plurality of circular frame rings to be secured therebetween.
Fig. 10 shows an alternative embodiment of a frame ring assembly 113 according to the second aspectof the invention, which alternative embodiment only differs from the frame ring assembly in fig. 5 in that it comprises mounting devices 101 as shown in fig. 9.
Fig. 11 shows an alternative embodiment of an embodiment of a cylindrical drum according to thethird aspect of the invention, shown without permeable metal sheets, and with only one frame ringassembly prior to removing the mounting devices 101. The cylindrical drum comprises a cylindricalcore 103 having an envelope surface 106, and elongated supporting ribs 105 in the same manner as infig. 8. A frame ring assembly 113 of the type shown in fig. 10 is mounted onto the core and supportingribs with each holding element 107 of the at least one mounting device arranged circumferentiallybetween two adjacent supporting ribs 105. Thereby, the mounting device as a whole (including theholding element 107) can be removed after the frame rings have been attached to the supporting ribs.
The circular frame rings of the frame ring assembly are thus directly attached to the supporting ribs.
Fig. 12 shows a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method according to the fourth aspect ofthe invention. The method comprises securing 201 the plurality of circular frame rings orthogonally tothe holding element of the mounting device using the securing device of the mounting device, placing202 the at least one mounting device with thereto secured circular frame rings concentrically aroundthe cylindrical core and its supporting ribs, attaching 203 the circular frame rings to the supporting ribsand releasing and removing 204 the securing device of the at least one mounting device. The method optionally comprises removing 205 each holding element.
Fig. 13 shows a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method according to the fifth aspect ofthe invention. The method comprises providing 206 a cylindrical core having an envelope surface, attaching 207 elongated supporting ribs onto the envelope surface, such that the ribs extend radiallyand in a longitudinal direction of the cylindrical core and are distributed around the circumference ofthe cylindrical core, mounting 200 circular frame rings onto the supporting ribs using the methodshown in fig. 12, and attaching 208 at least one permeable metal sheet onto the circular frame ringsconcentrically with the envelope surface radially outside the frame rings to form an envelope surface of the cylindrical drum as a whole.
The description above and the appended drawings are to be considered as non-limiting examples ofthe invention. The person skilled in the art realizes that several changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention. For example, the frame ring assemblies may comprise another number of frame rings, the holding element and securing device may have different shapes or size, and the envelope surface of the drum may be formed of differently sized permeable sheets.
