Abstract
Radar electronic protection method against DRFM false target jammingAbstractDRFM false target generation is a serious jamming threat to radar. The DRFM captures and copy the radar pulses making jamming pulses identical to the pulses the radar transmit. The invention explore drawbacks common in DRFM jammers in order to protect the radar from being deceived by false targets. The invention is a method to be used in a radar device. The method is to transmit an extra pulse at the same frequency as the main pulse but the second pulse shall be amplitude attenuated typically around 6 dB. The second pulse, called secondary pulse, shall be delayed approximately two pulse widths from the main pulse. Alternatively the secondary pulse can be transmitted before the main pulse. The radar will expect to receive this extra attenuated pulse at the right distance from a normal target echo. The DRFM jammer employing one of the mentioned drawbacks will fail to produce this extra pulse and hence echoes without it or with non attenuated secondary pulse can be indicated being a jammer false target. Background and problem descriptionDRFM false target generation is a serious jamming threat to radar. The DRFM captures and copy the radar pulses making jamming pulses identical to the pulses the radar transmit. Traditionally a guard antenna is used to prevent false targets in the sidelobe and backlobe regions but it does not protect against main lobe false targets. The invention explore drawbacks common in DRFM jammers. The first drawback is that the latest recorded pulse for a radar is used in the false target generation and the second drawback is that the DRFM input signal is amplitude limited to improve jamming signal quality and handle a large dynamic range input vs. output. The invention explore either of the drawbacks.Figure descriptionFigure 1 shows part of a radar block diagram. The Modulator must be able to attenuate pulses which is shown in the figure by a controlled attenuator. The Modulator and Signal processing must be tailored to the invention.Figure 2 shows a pulse pair with main pulse and secondary pulse.Description of the inventionThe invention is a method to be used in a radar device. The method is to transmit an extra pulse at the same frequency as the main pulse but the second pulse shall be amplitude attenuated typically around 6 dB. The second pulse, hereafter called secondary pulse, shall be delayed approximately two pulse widths from the main pulse. Alternatively the secondary pulse can be transmitted before the main pulseThe radar will expect to receive this extra attenuated pulse at the right distance from a normal target echo. The DRFM jammer employing one of the mentioned drawbacks will fail to produce this extra pulse
