Abstract

The present invention relates to an encoder (600), a decoder (500) and methods for efficient compression of segmented video. Efficient compression is achieved through the usage of open-GOP intra pictures and through storing coded pictures in a bitstream (100) in an order which is different from the coding order. A decoder (500) can decode the bitstream (100) by determining for at least one coded picture (10) that the coded picture (10) should be buffered, and then buffering that coded picture (10) until another coded picture (20) has been decoded, and then decoding the first coded picture (10) using that other coded picture (20) as a reference picture.
