Description

Furthermore, many engineering operations are also time consuming and require repetitive steps. For example, to enable/disable a data logging, the authorized person must first log in to the device, and then perform operations in order to enable/disable the logging.
Object and summary of the invention lt is an object of the present invention to at least partly overcome the above problems, and to provide an improved method and an apparatus for authorizing a person to perform 10 different operations on an electronic device or system.
This object is achieved by a method as defined in claim 1.
The method comprises the following steps: 15 0 capturing an image of a finger of the person, 0 identifying a fingerprint in the captured image, 0 comparing the identified fingerprint with a plurality of stored fingerprints, 0 identifying of the person based on the result of the comparison of the fingerprints, 0 identifying a gesture made by the finger, 20 0 comparing the identified gesture with predetermined gesturers representing different operations on the device, 0 determining which operation the person has requested to perform based on the result of the comparison of the gestures, 0 determining whether or not the person is authorized to perform the requested 25 operation based on the determined identity and information on which specific operations the identified persons are authorized to perform, and 0 authorizing the person to perform the requested operation if it is determined that the person is authorized to perform the requested operation, and otherwise denying the person to perform the requested operation. 30 The steps can be performed in different orders than described above. For example, the gesture can be identified before the fingerprint is identified. 10 15 20 25 30 This object is achieved by an apparatus as defined in claim 2.
The apparatus comprises: a data storage for storing a plurality of predetermined fingerprints belonging to persons authorized to perform one or more operations on the device or system, for storing information on which specific operations the persons belonging to the fingerprints are authorized to perform, and for storing predetermined gesturers representing different operations to be performed on the device or system, a human-machine interaction (HMI) interface adapted to capture an image of a finger, to identify a fingerprint in the captured image, and to identify a gesture made by the finger, and an authentication module adapted to identify the person requesting to perform the operation based on the identified fingerprint and the stored fingerprints, to determine the operation to be perform based on the identified gesture and said predetermined gesturers, to determine whether or not the identified person is authorized to perform the requested operation based on the determined identity of the person and the stored information on which operations the identified person is authorized to perform, and to authorize the person to perform the requested operation if the person is authorized to perform the operation, and otherwise to deny the person to perform the requested operation.
This invention proposes the use of a combination of finger prints and gestures for easy authentication and engineering. Only an authorized person together with the right finger movement is allowed to perform the specific operations. Simply by wiping a finger, or several, in a predefined movement (gesture) on a specific touch area, attached to the device or remotely, e.g. a touch screen, the user can be authenticated to perform engineering operations, e.g. log in, enable/disable remote access to the device, acknowledging of alarms, a door entering system (alarm system).
The invention enables fast and easy device engineering approach, high security level due to the use of fingerprints, and no need for user name/password or any key identification devices, such as NFC devices. 10 15 20 25 30 According to an embodiment of the invention the HMI interface includes a combined fingerprint scanner and touch area, the fingerprint scanner is adapted to capture an image of the finger and to identify a fingerprint in the captured image, and the touch area is adapted to identify a gesture made by the finger on the screen. The specific touch area has a built in fingerprint scanner, and by that way only an authorized person together with the right finger movement can perform the specific operations. The touch area is, for example, a touch screen.
Brief description of the drawings The invention will now be explained in more detail by description of different embodiments of the invention and with reference to the appended figure.
Fig. 1 shows an apparatus according to an embodiment of the invention.
Detailed description of preferred embodiments of the invention Figure 1 shows an example of an apparatus for authorizing a person to perform different operations according to the invention. The apparatus comprises a HMI interface 1 including a combined fingerprint scanner 2 and touch screen 3. The fingerprint scanner is adapted to capture an image of the finger and to identify a fingerprint in the captured image, and the touch screen is adapted to identify a gesture made by the finger on the screen. The fingerprint scanner 2 is integrated in the touch screen 3.
A fingerprint scanner has two basic functions: to capture an image of a finger, and to determines whether a pattern of ridges and valleys in this image matches the pattern of ridges and valleys in pre-scanned images. A fingerprint scanner typically includes a charge- coupled device (CCD) camera. The fingerprint scanner has its own light source, typically an array oflight-emitting diodes, to illuminate the ridges of the finger. A touch screen is an electronic visual display that a user can control through simple gestures by touching the screen with one finger. 10 15 20 25 30 The apparatus further comprises computer unit 4. The computer unit 4 can be any type of logical unit including processing power, internal memory, and data storage, for example a PC, a tablet computer or a smart phone.
The computer unit 4 comprises a data storage 5 for storing a plurality of predetermined fingerprints belonging to different persons authorized to perform one or more operations on the device or system, for storing information on which specific operations the persons belonging to the fingerprints are authorized to perform, and for storing predetermined gesturers representing different operations to be performed on the device or system. The gesture is finger movements forming a certain pattern on the screen, for example, a triangular-shaped pattern as shown in the figure. Different gestures are defined for various operations, e.g., a circle movement for storing logs on the device, or a swipe movement to reboot the device.
The computer unit 4 further comprises an authentication module 5 adapted to identify the person requesting to perform the operation based on the identified fingerprint and the stored fingerprints, to determine the operation to be perform based on the identified gesture and said predetermined gesturers, to determine whether or not the identified person is authorized to perform the requested operation based on the determined identity of the person and the stored information on which operations the identified person is authorized to perform, and to authorize the person to perform the requested operation if the person is authorized to perform the operation, and otherwise to deny the person to perform the requested operation. The authentication module 5 is a software module.
According to the invention, fingerprint recognition, or fingerprint authentication is used in combination with a predefined gesture, i.e. finger movement, in order to perform specific engineering operations. Security is embedded in the fingerprint. Only authenticated persons will have permission to perform the operations. Different persons can be authenticated to perform different operations, i.e. have different levels of authentications. lt is possible to choose own gestures, i.e. it is possible to define personalized finger movements for a certain operation. There is no need for passwords. lt is possible to add different gestures for different operations, like to store logs, system shut down, etc. 10 The specific touch area has a built in fingerprint scanner, and by that way only an authorized person together with the right finger movement can perform the specific operations. The predefined movement could be a subject of configuration, e.g., the authorized user can in advance defined what kind of movement he or she wants to use for a certain engineering operation. Also, the authorized user should be able to define the finger movements for various operations, e.g., make a circle movement in order to store logs on devices, or swipe with the finger up to reboot the device. Further, access control could be applied, i.e., different user accounts will have different permissions.
This invention can be used in any area where authentication and security level is high.
