The voltage source converter (7) as claimed in claim 6, wherein the multilevel converter is a three-level flying capacitor converter. 8. A compensating device (5) for a high voltage power system (1), the compensating device comprising: at least one voltage source converter (7) as claimed in any of claims 1-7, wherein the at least one voltage source converter (7) is controllable such that the compensating device can provide power compensation to the high voltage power system (1). 9 The compensating device (5) as claimed in claim 8, wherein the compensating device (5) is a STATCOM.
