Abstract

In a method and system for controlling a combustion engine which powers a vehicle provided with a cruise control which is set to run the vehicle at an automatically regulated velocity, the engine is run alternately in a high-torque mode at high torque and in a zero-torque mode at zero torque. This prevents the engine from being run in a range at low torque and thereby reduces total fuel consumption.
