Abstract

A multiple gear main gearbox and a range gearbox (24) driven by the main gearbox are located between the vehicle engine (4) and a central gearbox (16) for a vehicle axle (14). The central gearbox is driven by a cardan shaft system (30) and the vehicle axle it is associated with comprises drive shafts (22) for the driven wheels (12) of the vehicle (2). The range gearbox is separate from the main gearbox and located in a position where it is directly connected to the central gearbox. The cardan shaft system is engaged with an output shaft (26) from the main gearbox and an input shaft (28) for the range gearbox.
