Abstract
A rod and cup assembly for use in an apparatus for measuring viscoelastic properties of blood, wherein surfaces of the rod and the cup move relative to each other, is disclosed. The surfaces of either of, or both of, the rod and the cup that will come into contact with blood are of a noble metal or noble metals. The noble metal is selected from the group consisting of gold, silver, palladium, rutenium, iridium, titan and platinum. Preferably the noble metal used is gold. The noble metal surface is a coating which may be applied by physical vapour deposition onto a core made of e.g. a polymeric material. The rod or the cup may be made of a polymeric material such as polyamide, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyacrylonitrile, polyacrylate or polyester.The relative movement between the cup and the rod are either oscillating around a common axis or lateral along the same axis.The apparatus for measuring viscoelastic properties is a rheometer or an elastometer.
