Abstract

An ionizing radiation detector comprises a focusing electrode arranged between an avalanche cathode and anode, and having a hole with an area smaller than the cathode hole but larger than the anode hole. An ionizing radiation detector comprises a chamber filled with ionizable medium, first electrode arrangement(s), and read-out element arrangement(s) (15). The first electrode arrangement is provided in the chamber and includes an electron avalanche amplification unit (17) having avalanche cathode(s) (18) and anode(s) (4), between which a voltage is applied for creating an electric field for avalanche amplification. The read-out element arrangement detects electron avalanches. The avalanche cathode has hole(s) with a top view area larger than that of associated anode. The anode is centered w.r.t the hole. A focusing electrode (19) is arranged between the cathode and anode, and has a hole with an area smaller than the cathode hole but larger than the anode hole. An Independent claim is also included for a method of detecting ionizing radiation by: (a) forming in each of at least one region including at least one avalanche cathode and anode a concentrated electric field for causing electron avalanches; (b) detecting the electron avalanches with read-out elements; (c) focusing the electrons with at least one anode; (d) subjecting the electrons to a first electric field in a conversion and drift volume, where the first electric field forces the electrons to enter at least one region with a concentrated electric field; and (e) focusing the electrons with at least one focusing electrode.
