Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of laser processing of materials, in particular to a method for laser recording of integral waveguides, based on a local change in the refractive index of a glass-ceramic material by focused femtosecond laser radiation. The result obtained can be used to create waveguide devices for IR optics, including thermally stable integrated optical circuits.
Recent advances in the field of micromodification of the structure of transparent dielectrics by ultrashort laser pulses increase the relevance of studying direct laser recording of channel waveguides and other integrated optical components. There are three main types of waveguides, depending on the change in refractive index caused by laser action on the material. Type I waveguides are based on laser-induced refractive index enhancement, and their core can be directly written with a laser beam. In US Pat. No. 6,977,137 B2, modes of laser modification of the silicate glass structure with additions of B 2 O 3 and GeO 2 oxides were selected. A channel with an increased refractive index was formed in the bulk of the samples by laser pulses generated by a titanium-sapphire laser with a radiation wavelength of 830 nm, an energy of 0.1–10 μJ, a pulse duration of 18 fs, and a repetition rate of 1–250 kHz. The laser beam was focused into the sample volume using 5x and 20x objectives (NA = 0.15 and 0.30, respectively). The scanning speed of the laser beam was varied within 5–100 μm/s. The use of sufficiently high pulse energy inevitably leads to the formation of regions with increased internal stress, which in turn adversely affects the waveguide uniformity. A similar result is described by the authors in US Pat. No. 7,568,365 B2. Waveguides with an increased index in the core relative to the periphery were formed in borosilicate glass.
A general disadvantage of the method of femtosecond formation of the waveguide core is that it is the region over which the light beam should move that is modified. This approach leads to a change in the properties of the material, which may be inhomogeneous along the length of the track. In addition, the size of the waveguide mode is limited by the size of the waist region of the recording beam.
More promising from the point of view of homogeneity is the creation of waveguides of types II and III, where, by local modification of the material properties, the shell of the future light-guiding channel is formed, and the unmodified material serves as the core. This approach requires a negative change in the refractive index during its local modification. Known work, in which the formation of waveguides in glass-ceramic MgO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 systems doped with Cr 4+ ions, was carried out using ion exchange [US 7315683 B2]. Samples of magnesium aluminosilicate glass-ceramics were immersed in a 1 mol % Ag/KNO 3 solution for 30 minutes at 450°С, which led to the diffusion of Ag + and K + ions into the surface layers, which, in turn, became depleted in Na + cations. Ion exchange provides a change in the refractive index from the surface to 60 μm in the depth of the sample by An = -0.044. In this case, the waveguide is the sample itself, with a loss for light propagation of 0.6 dB/cm. The disadvantage of this technique is the impossibility of creating complex waveguide architectures in the volume of a glass-ceramic sample.
More promising from the point of view of creating integrated optical circuits is the recording of light-guiding microchannels in the volume of a material by focused laser radiation. US Pat. No. 7,132,223 B2 describes a method for recording channel waveguides with a laser beam in a volume of quartz glass and a CaF 2 crystal. The essence of the technique is to move the beam focus of a titanium-sapphire laser with a wavelength of 800 nm, a pulse duration of 20–50 fs, an energy of 0.1–20 mJ, a pulse repetition rate in the kHz range along a helical trajectory at a speed of up to 100 μm/s and a step 5 µm/s, while leaving the core of the future light guide channel intact. This approach makes it possible to form a cladding with a reduced refractive index around the unmodified core. The decrease in the refractive index under the action of laser pulses is due to the formation of microvoids in the structure of the material. In this case, the core diameter is 7÷10 µm. The formation of microvoids reduces the density of the shell and, as a consequence, leads to a decrease in the refractive index. The disadvantage of the described technique is the need for subsequent heat treatment of the sample, which eliminates the emerging effect of light scattering from an array of microvoids created in the shell.
2 «LASER INSCRIPTION OF STRUCTURES IN CRYSTALS)), The closest analogue to the claimed invention in terms of technical essence and the achieved result is a method for forming waveguides with a modified shell, claimed in patent WO 2005/040874 A2 "LASER INSCRIPTION OF STRUCTURES IN CRYSTALS)), which is selected as a prototype. It claims a method for laser writing the cladding of waveguides with a reduced refractive index relative to the core in a neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal. The described result is achieved by processing the sample with femtosecond laser radiation at a wavelength of 800 nm, with a pulse duration of 120 fs, a repetition rate of 1 kHz and an energy of 0.5 mJ. The laser beam was focused using an objective with a numerical aperture of 0.65. The scanning speed of the laser beam was varied within 50÷500 μm/s. The formed shell is a set of parallel tracks recorded at different focusing depths, which ultimately leads to the creation of a waveguide with a circular cross section.
The disadvantage of this method is the high energy required for the femtosecond modification of the crystalline phase. At the same time, the possibility of applicability of this approach to the recording of waveguides in the volume of glass-ceramic materials has not yet been clarified.
The present invention solves the problem of recording integrated waveguides with a reduced refractive index in a modified shell in transparent glass-ceramic materials.
The technical result of the invention is the laser recording of a cylindrical shell of a waveguide with a reduced refractive index in the volume of a transparent glass-ceramic matrix.
The specified technical result is achieved by the method of recording integral waveguides based on a change in the refractive index of a transparent dielectric, including focusing femtosecond laser pulses into the volume of the dielectric, moving the focused beam along a given trajectory and successively recording several parallel tracks that limit the area of unmodified material, while as a transparent a lithium aluminosilicate sitall is used as a dielectric, and a femtosecond laser generates pulses at a wavelength of 1030 nm, a duration of 180÷600 fs, with a repetition rate of 1÷100 kHz, an energy of 200÷1000 nJ when a focused laser beam is moved by an objective with a numerical aperture of 0.45÷0, 65 at a speed of 200÷1000 µm/s, with a step between the tracks forming the cylindrical shell of the waveguide, 3÷5 µm.
In the claimed work, the method of femtosecond local laser amorphization is used to record the shell of waveguides in lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) glass-ceramics with a temperature coefficient of linear expansion (TCLE) close to zero. The method is based on the fact that spatially selective heating by a focused femtosecond laser beam can cause partial or complete amorphization of crystalline microstructures, which leads to a local change in the glass-ceramic refractive index.
To record the waveguide cladding, we used a device based on a Pharos SP femtosecond laser (Light Conversion Ltd), emitting pulses with a duration of 18–600 fs at a wavelength of 1030 nm. Laser modification of glass-ceramic samples was carried out with a pulse repetition rate of 1÷100 kHz, which ensures the athermal nature of the laser action. The energy of laser pulses varied within 200–1000 nJ. The sample was mounted on a 3-axis motorized high-precision stage on an ABL1000 pneumatic drive, Aerotech. A series of parallel tracks forming an amorphous cylindrical shell was recorded by moving the sample perpendicular to the direction of propagation of a focused laser beam at a speed of 200÷1000 µm/s. The laser beam was focused using Olympus LCPLN20XIR objectives (20x magnification, NA 0.45) and Olympus LCPLN50XIR (50x magnification, NA 0.65) with varying the focusing depth from passage to passage, which made it possible to form a waveguide core with an almost circular cross section centered at a depth of 150 µm under the surface of the sample inside the shell (type III waveguide). The recording depth of the waveguide is limited on the side of small values by the height of the cross section of the tracks in the upper part of the shell, which must be completely in the volume of the sample, and on the side of large values - by the working distance of the objective and its ability to compensate for spherical aberrations, which, as a rule, are corrected in a certain range of focus depths depending on lens model. To form a waveguide core with an increased refractive index relative to the shell, centered at a certain depth under the sample surface, a number of parallel tracks are recorded by the laser at different focusing depths and distances between adjacent tracks of 3–5 μm, which together form a region of reduced refractive index of a cylindrical shape and are arranged in this way that the cross section of the unmodified glass-ceramic inside this region has the shape of a circle with a diameter of 12÷24 microns. After the shell was recorded, the faces of the glass-ceramic sample were polished in such a way that both ends of the waveguide were brought to the surface. The total length of the sample with the fabricated waveguides was 17.3 mm.
(N.A. = 0,3).Quantitative phase microscopy was used to evaluate the change in the refractive index at a wavelength of 1045 nm in individual tracks recorded by the laser. The measurements were carried out on an Olympus BX61 optical motorized microscope equipped with a Retiga 3000 monochrome 14-bit CCD camera and an Olympus UPlanFL 10x objective (N.A. = 0.3).
The optical characteristics of the recorded waveguides were evaluated at a wavelength of 1064 nm using a single-mode cw Nd:YAG laser. The radiation transmitted through the waveguide was collected by an Olympus LCPLN IR 10x objective, which formed the near field profile on an Ophir Spiricon SP620U CCD camera. The losses due to light propagation in the waveguides were estimated by measuring the optical transmission of the setup with and without the sample, taking into account Fresnel losses.
1.As a transparent glass-ceramic matrix, LAS sitalls are used, obtained by two-stage heat treatment of glass Li 2 O-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 systems in an electric furnace, containing nanocrystals of β-eucryptite-like solid solutions, with TCLE values α=-5.0÷+1 ,8⋅10 -7 ⋅K -1 in the temperature range -80÷200°С. The procedure for their synthesis and sitallization modes are described in detail in patent RU 2569703 C1.
The achievement of the claimed technical result is confirmed by the following examples.
Example 1. Femtosecond laser radiation recorded a waveguide in a transparent LAS glass-ceramic sample 20×20×2 mm in size with a TCLE value of -1.5⋅10 -7 ⋅K -1 . Focused laser radiation at a wavelength of 1030 nm, with a pulse duration of 250 fs, a repetition rate of 1 kHz, and a pulse energy of 300 nJ formed an amorphous shell of the waveguide, consisting of 20 tracks surrounding an unmodified core 18 μm in diameter. The distance between individual tracks in the formed shell was 3 μm. To focus the laser beam, a lens with a magnification of 50x and a numerical aperture of 0.65 was used. Laser processing with the indicated radiation parameters led to the formation in the ceramic glass sample at a depth of 150 μm relative to the surface of an amorphous cylindrical shell with a refractive index lower than in the unmodified region. The change in the refractive index was Δn=-0.005. The formed waveguide is characterized as single-mode with a light propagation loss of 2.4 dB/s.

The claimed limits of change in the parameters of femtosecond laser radiation make it possible to record integral waveguides in the volume of transparent glass-ceramics of the LAS system with a near-zero TCLE value, and varying the geometric dimensions of the formed amorphous shell surrounding the unmodified core of the waveguide makes it possible to obtain the necessary modal characteristics and values of losses for light propagation. The upper and lower limits of the indicated limits of the parameters of laser writing of the waveguide cladding are due to the appearance of various kinds of defects, such as: the appearance of cracks surrounding the waveguide, the absence of clear boundaries, the unmodified core - the cladding, indicating a slight change in the refractive index, discontinuity of the waveguide structure in some of its sections.
