Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of environmental protection, more specifically to measuring the radioactivity of objects, more specifically, to methods for detecting radioactive sources in the surveyed area and in moving objects. The method will find the greatest application in radiation monitoring of various territories and objects using radiation detection systems installed on vehicles, for example, on cars, as well as using systems installed at checkpoints, points of reception and processing of secondary raw materials, scrap metal, industrial and household waste.
[1].There is a known method of radiation monitoring of moving objects, including the registration of ionizing radiation, at least one detector installed in the monitoring area through which the mentioned objects move, continuous measurement of the current values of the radiation flux recorded by the detector, comparison of the above values with a constant threshold, when which is judged by the flow of registered radiation about the presence of radioactivity in the controlled object [1].
The disadvantage of the known method is the low sensitivity of detection due to the fact that the threshold must be set significantly higher (1.5-2 times) the level of the natural background in the control area due to its possible fluctuations caused, for example, by precipitation, dust, instability of the equipment and etc.
[2].The closest technical solution to the proposed invention is a method of dynamic radiation monitoring, which includes continuous registration of ionizing radiation by at least one detector with relative movement of the detector and the controlled object, fixing the moments of exceeding a given threshold by a detector signal proportional to the flux of recorded radiation, which are used to judge detecting a source of radioactivity in an object, measuring the velocity V of the relative movement of the detector and the object [2].
The disadvantage of the prototype is the inability to simultaneously determine the location and power of the detected radiation source, which does not allow to quickly assess the danger of the source and take measures to localize and neutralize it.
This is due to the fact that when implementing the method for surveying the territory and various objects using a mobile vehicle with detectors installed in it, the appearance of a source detection signal indicates only that there is a source in the area where the detectors are located. Its location, characterized by the distance from the traffic trajectory the source is located, as well as the source power (dose rate generated by the source radiation at a standard, for example, 1 m distance) remain unknown. It can be a weak source located near the trajectory of traffic with detectors, and a powerful source, which is a significant hazard, located at a considerable distance from the trajectory of the detectors. In an embodiment of the method, according to which the controlled object (car, car) moves relative to the stationary detectors, in the prototype it is also impossible to determine the location and power of the source located in the controlled object in time. The source can be located both near the outer surface of the vehicle and in the depth of the vehicle. The lack of information about the location of the source in the transport significantly complicates its search, extraction and disposal.
The technical result of the proposed invention is to improve the reliability of monitoring by providing the ability to determine in the process of monitoring the location and power of the detected radiation source.
The specified technical result is achieved by the proposed method of dynamic radiation monitoring, which includes continuous registration of ionizing radiation by at least one detector with relative movement of the detector and the controlled object, fixing the moments of exceeding a predetermined threshold by a detector signal proportional to the flux of recorded radiation, by which the detection of a radioactivity source is judged in the object, measuring the velocity V of the relative movement of the detector and the object, and upon detection of radioactivity, the current values Xi of the detector signal are stored, the differences ΔХ1 and ΔХ2 between the maximum and minimum values of the signal located in time before and after its maximum value are recorded, the time interval t between current signal values equal to ΔX 1/2 and ΔH 2/2, determining the distance from the detector to the detected source of radioactivity from the ratio and the dose rate R0 of the radiation source at the standard distance find from the relation where ΔХ = (ΔХ1 + ΔХ 2 ) / 2, K is the proportionality coefficient between the detector signal amplitude and the dose rate of the recorded radiation.
Distinctive features are that when radioactivity is detected, the current values Xi of the detector signal are stored, the differences ΔХ1 and ΔХ2 between the maximum and minimum signal values located in time before and after its maximum value are determined, the time interval t between the current signal values equal to ΔX 1 / 2 and ΔH 2/2 determined distance from the detector to the detected source of radioactivity from the ratio and the dose rate R0 of the radiation source at the standard distance find from the relation where ΔХ = (ΔХ1 + ΔХ 2 ) / 2, K is the proportionality coefficient between the detector signal amplitude and the dose rate of the recorded radiation.
New essential features provide improved reliability of control by providing the ability to determine the location and estimate the strength of the detected source.

When monitoring stationary (Fig. 1) objects (territories, structures), the method is implemented using a
A highly sensitive scintillation detector with a volume of 5-20 liters is used as
The method is implemented as follows. When examining territories,
When radioactivity is detected, the current values Xi of the detector signal are stored, the difference ΔX between the maximum and minimum signal values located in time before and after its maximum value is determined, the time interval t between the current signal values equal to ΔX / 2 is determined, the distance is determined from the detector to the detected source of radioactivity from the ratio and the dose rate R0 of the radiation source at the standard distance find from the relation K-coefficient of proportionality between the amplitude of the detector signal and the dose rate of the registered radiation.
If the background level changes during the monitoring (Fig. 4), then the differences ΔX 1 and ΔX 2 between the maximum and minimum signal values located in time before and after its maximum value are determined, the time interval t between the current signal values is fixed, ΔH equals 1/2 and ΔH 2/2, determining the distance from the detector to the detected source of radioactivity from the ratio and the dose rate R0 of the radiation source at the standard distance find from the relation where ΔХ = (ΔХ1 + ΔХ 2 ) / 2, K is the proportionality coefficient between the detector signal amplitude and the dose rate of the recorded radiation.
If the
Thus, when a source is detected, its location in the monitoring zone (distance to the detector) is determined, as well as its power by the signal amplitude and the value of the specified distance. This allows you to assess the danger of the source and take timely measures to localize and neutralize it.
1.Example 1.
The method is implemented to survey the area near the road. Plastic scintillators with a volume of 10 liters are used as detectors. At a natural background level of 0.1 μSv / h, the average pulse count rate of the detectors is 2000 pulses / s. This corresponds to an analog signal amplitude of 0.2 V. The K factor is 2 mV / nSv / h. The vehicle speed with detectors is 30 km / h. The detection threshold of Xp is set at 220 mV, which corresponds to an increase in the radiation dose rate of 10 nSv / h above the background. During the movement of vehicles with detectors, the threshold was exceeded, which corresponds to the detection of a radiation source in the monitoring zone, which stretches along the trajectory of vehicle movement. The detector signal ΔX minus the background was 50 mV. The time interval t between the values of the signal ΔX / 2 (Fig. 3) before and after the maximum was 1 second. From the ratio we determine that the distance from the source to the detector is 4.2 m. The power of the source, determined from the expression amounted to 1760 nSv / h at a distance of 1 m, i.e. 1.76 μSv / h. Thus, the proposed method provided not only the detection of the source in the monitoring area, but also the determination of its location, as well as its power.
The prototype method makes it possible to detect the above source, but it is not possible to determine its location and power in the prototype. This can be a weak source located close to the traffic trajectory, or a powerful source located at a considerable distance from the traffic trajectory with a detector.
Under the same conditions as in example 1, only the detector signal minus the background was 500 mV, and the time interval was t = 10 s. The distance from the detector to the source was 42 m, and the dose rate of the source was 1.76 mSv / h at a distance of 1 m. This source poses a significant hazard, and immediate measures are required to localize and neutralize it.
In the method - the prototype fails to determine the location of the source and the degree of its danger.
Under the same conditions as in example 1, the control is carried out under conditions of a changing background (Fig. 4). The Xmin1 value was 60 mV; Xmax = 80 mV; Xmin2 = 20 mV; ΔX 1 = 20 mV; ΔX 2 = 60 mV; ΔХ = (ΔХ 1 + ΔХ 2 ) / 2 = 40 mV; time interval t = 2 s, which corresponds to the distance from the detector to the source equal to 8.4 m and its dose rate at a distance of 1 m - 5.63 μSv / h.
Method - prototype in conditions of variable background does not allow to unambiguously detect the source, since the triggering threshold in this method should be higher than the maximum background value, including higher than the value of Xmax (Fig. 4). If the threshold is below Xmax (a powerful source at a short distance from the detector), then the prototype method fails to determine the location of the source and the degree of its danger.
A vehicle (car 4) moving at a speed of 15 km / h relative to detector 1 (Fig. 2) is monitored. The distance from the detector to the surface of the car was 1 m. The detector signal ΔХ minus the background was 50 mV. The time interval t between the values of the signal ΔX / 2 (Fig. 3) before and after the maximum was 1 second. From the ratio we determine that the distance from the source to the detector is 2.1 m. The power of the source, determined from the expression was 440 nSv / h at a distance of 1 m, i.e. 0.44 µSv / h. The distance from the source to the transport surface facing the detector is defined as the difference between the distance from the source to the detector and the distance from the detector to the transport surface. In this case, the distance from the source to the surface of the vehicle is 1.1 m. Thus, the proposed method provided not only the detection of the source in the car, but also the determination of its location (depth in the car), as well as its power.
Method - the prototype is unable to determine at what distance from the surface of the car the source is located, and what is its power.
Thus, the proposed method provides an increase in the reliability of monitoring due to the provision of the possibility of determining the location and power of the source during the monitoring process and reliable recording of events associated with the location of the source in a moving vehicle.
