Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of production processes of additives for polymers (nanomodifiers) based on carbon nanoparticles.
The invention relates to a method for the production of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to the surface of which molecular fragments, including epoxy groups or amino groups, are covalently grafted. The invention can be used for the manufacture of additives (nanomodifiers) for epoxy compositions, the addition of which in small quantities significantly improves the elastic-strength properties of the epoxy matrix due to better dispersion in the epoxy composition and the formation of chemical bonds of CNTs with the polymer during curing of the binder.
Among polymer composites, fiber composites with a high modulus epoxy matrix are an important structural material in aircraft and rocket engineering, shipbuilding, automotive and electronics, and other technical applications. Further improvement of the material properties of the composites requires an improvement in the elastic-strength characteristics of both the fibers and the polymer binder.
It is known that some types of carbon nanoparticles, primarily CNTs, added in small amounts to epoxy matrices, noticeably improve their elastic strength properties. Table 1 shows examples showing the high efficiency of using for this purpose single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with various types of high-modulus epoxy resins.

Э. In the work of [A.E. Butler et al., 2017], it was shown that in order for the addition of SWCNTs or DWCNTs to an epoxy resin with a high elastic modulus (E> 2 GPa) to lead to hardening of the nanocomposite, it is necessary that the nanotubes are not only uniformly distributed inside the polymer, but formed a coherent reinforcing network in the polymer matrix, that is, they were integrated into the epoxy matrix and were chemically bonded to it.
This can be achieved, for example, if molecular fragments, including epoxy groups or amino groups, are covalently grafted onto the surface of nanoparticles. Amines are widely used as hardeners of epoxy resins.
[S.J.V. Frankland et al., 2002].For this reason, the development of simple and effective processes for the covalent functionalization of carbon nanoparticles, primarily single-layer and thin multilayer carbon nanotubes, grafting epoxy groups or amino groups to their surface is an urgent technical task. Theoretical calculations show that even a high degree of covalent functionalization of an SWCNT wall to 10% only slightly reduces the mechanical strength of a nanotube by ~ 15% [Gang A., Sinnott, S.B., 1998]. Molecular modeling calculations also show a slight decrease in the nanotube modulus upon covalent functionalization up to 10% of carbon atoms [S.J.V. Frankland et al., 2002].
The difficulties in covalent functionalization of carbon nanoparticles are due to the fact that graphene, which forms the wall of a carbon nanotube, is an extremely chemically inert structure.
[Rosca I.D. et al. 2005; Rasheed A. et al., 2007]. [J.B. Donnet and R.C. Bansal, 1984].Known methods for covalent functionalization of carbon nanoparticles by processing them in strong acids - nitric, sulfuric, a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids [Rosca I.D. et al. 2005; Rasheed A. et al., 2007]. These techniques are an adaptation to CNTs of known technologies for the oxidative functionalization of commercial carbon fibers for carbon plastics [J.B. Donnet and R.C. Bansal, 1984].
Также и степень функционализации ОСУНТ карбоксильными группами в данном процессе остается не высокой и не превышает ~1% (ОСУНТ-(СООН)х, х~0.01), то есть составляет менее 1 ммоль/г ОСУНТ (наши данные, не опубликованы).As applied to SWCNTs, a significant drawback of oxidative functionalization methods is that this approach gives a low degree of functionalization of nanotubes. In this case, during processing, a significant loss of the initial product in adverse reactions occurs - up to 50% or more. The reason for this fact is that the oxidative method of functionalizing the SWCNT wall is based on the initial formation of a defect in graphene in the form of a hole and the functionalization of C atoms at the periphery of such a defect. Due to the high chemical stability of graphene, the rate of formation of defects in it during acid treatment is significantly lower than the rate of subsequent oxidation and gasification of C atoms at the periphery of the defect. This leads to a large loss of SWCNTs in the technology of oxidative functionalization. Also, the degree of functionalization of SWCNTs by carboxyl groups in this process remains low and does not exceed ~ 1% (SWCNT- (COOH) x , x ~ 0.01), i.e., it is less than 1 mmol / g SWCNTs (our data are not published).
During oxidative functionalization, acid-type functional groups form on the surface of carbon nanoparticles: carboxyl, hydroxyl, phenolic, which exhibit limited activity in reactions with epoxy groups. For this reason, the use of nanomodifiers based on such functionalization did not allow achieving a noticeable improvement in the properties of epoxy polymers.
A known method of the three-stage covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes, in which at the first stage carbon nanoparticles are processed in concentrated acids to form carboxyl groups, in the second stage from tadium, carboxyl groups are replaced by Cl (reaction with thionyl chloride, SOCl 2 ) [J. Chen et al., 1998] and thereafter, a chlorine-containing group is reacted with a suitably selected diamine, for example, bisphenolamine. The result is nanotubes functionalized with amino groups. The reaction temperature with diamine is typically 90-100 ° C and the reaction time is up to 3-4 days.
In the patent of V. Khabashesku et al. A method is described in which, in addition to treating CNTs in a mixture of strong acids, to increase the degree of functionalization of the wall of the nanotube, they are treated with succinic acid peroxide with heating, which allows grafting ethylcarboxyl groups on the CNT wall [US Pat. No. 7,601,421, B29B 15/10 publ. October 13, 2009]. Already after this, the processing steps in thionyl chloride and the reaction with diamine follow.
The disadvantages of this method of forming amino groups on the surface of CNTs are as follows: (i) after each processing step, nanoparticles must be removed from the liquid reaction medium, washed from the residual reagents and transferred to a new chemically active medium for the next stage of the chemical process; (ii) since nanopowders are highly dispersed materials, a large volume of liquid to nanopowder in a ratio of 50: 1 or more is required to wet them to obtain a mass technologically acceptable for processing; as a result, the consumption of reagents per 1 g of the product, for example, concentrated acid, is large, and requires several stages of washing the dispersed product from the acid with the formation of a large volume of wastewater.
There is a method of reducing the complexity of the process of covalent functionalization by carrying out the reaction of carboxylated CNTs with ammonia in the gas phase [TP Dyachkova, 2014]. This allows one to obtain amidated nanotubes in two stages. However, the drying process of carboxylated nanotubes, in particular, SWCNT- (COOH) x , leads them to a highly aggregated state with the formation of bundles of nanotubes, which subsequently cannot be dispersed even using ultrasound. As a result, after drying, the external specific surface of the product decreases several times, to ~ 100 m 2 / g or less. In such a highly aggregated form, even covalently functionalized SWCNTs do not form a stable dispersion in a liquid medium, are prone to sedimentation, and are ineffective for hardening polymers. In addition, amide groups have lower reactivity with an epoxy group.
Thus, the methods of covalent functionalization of carbon nanoparticles based on their processing in strong acids suffer from the following disadvantages.
1. Give a low degree of covalent functionalization of the nanoparticles by the final functional groups such as amino groups. This is especially true for SWCNTs and MWCNTs that have a surface with a low density of defects on it.
2. When applied to SWCNTs, they lead to a large loss of the initial product.
3. They do not allow to obtain functionalization of the surface with epoxy groups or this is done using a large number of sequential chemical treatments.
4. The need to carry out chemical reactions in several stages requires the transfer of the dispersed phase from one liquid reaction medium to another, which is very time-consuming, leads to high costs of reagents and to large expenses for the disposal of chemically active liquid discharges.
5. When trying to reduce the complexity of operations by translating certain stages into a reaction with a gaseous reagent, it is necessary to dry the dispersed product, which catastrophically and irreversibly reduces its dispersion, and, consequently, the quality.
6. When using diamines in one of the stages of the CNT functionalization process, the nanotubes are partially crosslinked together to form aggregates. This significantly affects the quality of the final product.
Barrera, 2010; Y. Chen et al. 2013]. In order to prevent cross-linking of nanotubes with each other in a reaction involving diamines, it was proposed to block the activity of one of the amino groups by the Boc protector [Y. Zhao, E.V. Barrera 2010; Y. Chen et al. 2013]. This allows you to achieve the desired result, but at the cost of complicating the technology of functionalizing CNTs by introducing another stage of processing the dispersed product.
Along with oxidative functionalization, another method is known for covalent functionalization of carbon nanoparticles, based on the preliminary fluorination of their surface. This method was largely developed specifically for carbon nanoparticles such as SWCNTs and MWCNTs with a surface formed by graphene with a perfect structure, and is an adaptation of the previously developed graphite fluorination technology [Lagow et al., 1974]. Since the graphene layer of the nanotube wall is formed by sp 2 -hybridized carbon atoms, the reaction of attachment to them most easily proceeds from the whole variety of different types of reactions. Fluorine gas has special advantages as a reagent for such a reaction, since it easily generates F atoms under relatively mild conditions (FF dissociation energy is only 38 kcal / mol).
Thus, fluorination is a powerful tool for chemical modification of the surface of CNTs, which, in essence, is the activation of this surface.
Полученные в этих условиях фторированные ОСУНТ имели стехиометрию ~CF0.43.The study of the fluorination reaction of SWCNTs [Mickelson E.T. et al., 1998] gaseous fluorine in a wide temperature range from room temperature to 600 ° C showed that with increasing temperature the amount of chemically-added fluorine in the samples of fluorinated SWCNTs (SWCNT-F) increased from stoichiometry CF 0.1 to CF 0,996 . It was found that the tubular structure of the carbon skeleton was preserved if the stoichiometry of the fluorination product did not exceed CF 0.5 . This occurred at relatively low fluorination temperatures up to 250-300 ° C. At higher fluorination temperatures, partial carbonation of carbon nanotubes, amorphization of SWCNT strands, and rearrangement of the strand structure into multilayer strongly defective nanotubes / nanofibers began. Later, the same authors [Mickelson E.T. et al., 1999] chose as their optimal conditions for fluorination of SWCNTs their treatment for 10 hours in a fluorine duct strongly diluted with helium (10% F 2 / He) at a temperature of T = 250 ° C. The fluorinated SWCNTs obtained under these conditions had a stoichiometry of ~ CF 0.43 .
В. In the work of [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2009] the optimum fluorination temperature of fluorine gas was determined at a fluorine gas pressure P F2 = 0.8 bar on samples of purified SWCNTs for electric arc synthesis with a mass content of nanotubes of more than 80%. By the perfection of the structure of SWCNTs and the purity of samples, the material used in this work was identical in its characteristics to the purified SWCNTs of laser synthesis in the works of Mickelson E.T. et al. The outer surface of nanoparticles in such samples is graphene, which has practically no structural defects, which is typical for single-walled carbon nanotubes and laser synthesis. C-atoms in sp 3 hybridization, which have a higher chemical activity compared to graphene carbon, are present in such a sample only at the open ends of the nanotubes and on the surface of spherical carbon impurity nanoparticles. The fraction of such C atoms in the material relative to C atoms in sp 2 hybridization is small and amounts to only a few percent. Thus, in the sample of purified SWCNTs of electric arc synthesis, the main fraction of surface C atoms represents the most chemically passive part of carbon C atoms present on the surface of any other type of nanoparticles. As a result, the optimal fluorination conditions for pure SWCNTs of electric arc synthesis can be used as a guide for selecting the conditions for the most complete fluorination of the surface of other carbon nanoparticles.
It was found that the stoichiometry of fluorinated SWCNTs strongly depends on the temperature and partial pressure of gaseous fluorine in the reactor [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2009]. So, at a fluorine pressure of P F2 = 2 atm and T = 150 ° C, the same degree of fluorination of SWCNTs was obtained as for P F2 = 0.8 atm at a higher process temperature T = 190 ° C. This result actually confirms for SWCNTs the conclusion of the work [Lagow et al., 1974] that “a suitable combination of high temperature and high pressure of fluorine allows one to obtain fluorinated graphite (pyrolytic carbon) with stoichiometry CF x , x = 0.9-1.1 at any temperature in the range of 20-627 ° C and pressure in the range of 1-15 atm. "
An XPS analysis showed that the C-F bond in CNT-F is more ionic than in fluoroalkanes and weaker than, for example, the C-F bond in tetrafluoroethylene [V.N. Habanescu, 2011]. That is, the fluorine atom in CNT-F can easily be replaced by another suitable functional group.
Н. In the work of [V.N. Habashescu, 2011] provides a review of the currently discovered reactions of fluorine substitution in CNT-F for various functional groups.
You can get:

(3) amino acid derivatives of CNTs (reactions with amino acids by amino group) - the degree of functionalization of surface atoms is achieved - C surface R x , x = 0.03-0.1 depending on the nature of the amino acid and the temperature of the reaction.
In the literature, no description has been found of a process in which fluorine in CNT-F is replaced by a molecular moiety containing epoxy groups.
Н. Таблицу 1, [Zhu J. et al., 2004]).In the work of [V.N. Habanescu, 2011] describes the reaction of SWCNT-F with 2,6-diamino-3,5-diethyltoluene, which is used as a commercial hardener (W Cure) for epoxy resins. The reaction proceeds with stirring and heating to 90 ° C for 12 h and leads to the replacement of some fluorine atoms by fragments of aromatic diamine with the formation of the derivative F-SWCNT-NHC 6 HEt 2 MeNH 2 . The degree of functionalization of C surface atoms by a functional fragment is estimated at C surface R x , x = 0.05. Functionalized in this way SWCNTs have shown high efficiency in hardening an epoxy composite (see Table 1, [Zhu J. et al., 2004]).
The disadvantages of this method are: (1) the high consumption of the reagent, diamine, due to the need to conduct a reaction in it at SWCNT-F concentrations of not more than 0.1-0.5%. Otherwise, the viscosity of the dispersion will be very high, which will make mixing impossible; (2) partial crosslinking of nanotubes with each other with the formation of agglomerates; (3) low productivity of the process due to the long reaction time.
A more economical labor-intensive approach for producing SWCNT-amino (SWCNT-Si-NH 2 ) and SWCNT-epoxy (SWCNT-Si-epoxy) was proposed by Barrera et al. and involves the use of organosilanes [patent US 8,541,322,
Т. et al.]. A method for functionalizing CNTs for incorporation into an epoxy resin [Patent No. US 7,601,421, B29B 15/10, Khabashesku et al., Publ. October 13, 2009], which consists of the following: 1. The initial product - Bucky Pearls (Nanotechnology Inc. USA) - SWCNTs synthesized using HiPco technology - is treated in a mixture of concentrated acids (70% HNO 3 / H 2 SO 4 , 2 g CNT / l) for covalent inoculation of carboxyl groups onto the ends of nanotubes: SWCNT-COOH. After treatment in acid, the nanotubes are washed in alkali and precipitated on a filter. 2. Next, the nanotubes are fluorinated in a stream of fluorine diluted with helium with the addition of hydrogen for 12 hours at 150 ° C [Mickelson ET et al.]. As a result, additional functionalization of the wall of the nanotubes is achieved to obtain the product F-SWCNT-COOH. 3. Next, the nanotubes are dispersed in dimethylformamide (DMF), an epoxy resin - diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEB) is added to the dispersion, and the solvent, DMF, is removed by vacuum at 100 ° C. 4. At the last stage, a hardener, aromatic diamine EPI-CURE W, is introduced into the dispersion of nanotubes in epoxy resin and the whole mass is homogenized in a mixer, providing high shear during mixing.
The disadvantages of this scheme are: (i) a large number of stages of chemical processing of the material, which requires the isolation of CNTs from a liquid medium and washing with reagents, (ii) a large consumption of concentrated acids - up to 0.5 l per 1 g of product, requiring neutralization and disposal, (iii) the need to remove the high-boiling solvent - dimethylformamide - by vacuum distillation from a dispersion of SWCNTs in an epoxy resin, which is a medium with a high viscosity, which significantly complicates the process of vacuum distillation, (iv) the lack of quantitative control over the step New functionalization of nanotubes.
As a prototype of the invention, a method for functionalizing CNTs with diamines through the stage of preliminary fluorination of nanotubes described in [V.N. Habanescu, 2011] and claimed in patent [Patent No: US7,452,519 B2 Nov. 18, 2008]. According to this method, N-alkylaminated CNTs are obtained in reactions of fluorinated nanotubes with terminal diamines H 2 N (CH 2 ) n NH 2 , n = 2, 3, 4, 6. The reaction is carried out by boiling CNT-F (100 ° C, 3 hours) in the corresponding diamine in the presence of catalytic amounts of pyridine.
The method of claim 1, further comprising post-reaction processing steps selected from the group consisting of centrifugation, decanting, filtration, washing, drying, and combinations thereof." The description of the application for this patent (Example # 1) states that the study of samples in a transmission electron microscope showed that in addition to individual functionalized SWCNTs, a large number of nanotubes are observed covalently interconnected by molecular bridges, which leads to the formation of nanotube aggregates. Reproduction of this reaction under our conditions also showed the formation of tens of micron CNT aggregates in the product. However, for an epoxy matrix nanomodifier, not only the integration of CNTs into the polymer network is necessary, but also the high dispersion of the nanomaterial — the absence of large particles in it. The reason is that foreign inclusions in an elastic polymer matrix of another material with a particle size of more than 10-15 microns serve as stress concentrators (see, for example, [Bazhenov SL 2010]), which, instead of hardening, weaken the polymer matrix. In order to get rid of large SWCNT aggregates, the authors of the application provide for additional subsequent processing of the dispersion of nanotubes by centrifugation with sedimentation and separation of the coarse fraction, which is directly included in the application formula: "13. The method of
Thus, the patent selected as a prototype solves only part of the task of creating a nanomodifier for epoxy compositions, namely, the functionalization of CNTs by amino groups, but requires subsequent additional processing of CNT-amino dispersions in order to remove CNT aggregates larger than ~ 15-20 μm from the resulting product, which are formed in the process of obtaining the product itself by this method. In addition, the prototype lacks the ability to obtain CNTs functionalized with epoxy groups.
Thus, the technical problem is to obtain SWCNTs, MWCNTs, and other carbon nanoparticles functionalized with molecular fragments containing epoxy groups or molecular fragments containing amino groups, while achieving a highly dispersed state of CNTs in the reaction medium. In this case, it is necessary to obtain a high degree of functionalization of C surface atoms (C surface ) to C surface (FG) x , x ~ 0.05-0.09, FG is a functional group and minimize labor and material costs. Known methods of obtaining are labor-intensive, enormous, require the use of a significant amount of reagents, in some cases they do not have a quantitative confirmation of the degree of functionalization.

The carbon nanotubes of the present invention include single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), double-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multilayer carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphite nanofibres, or a combination of such carbon nanoparticles. Carbon nanotubes can be obtained by any of the known methods, including electric arc synthesis [Ebbesen, 1994; Krestinin A.V. et al. 2003], laser synthesis [Thess et al. 1996], vapor deposition with a catalyst on a substrate [Cheng et al., 1998], with a floating catalyst [Nikolaev et al., 1999]. Carbon nanotubes can be cleaned of impurities by known methods.
Disclosure of the invention
The technical result of the invention is to achieve a high degree of functionalization of surface C-atoms (C surface ) to C surface (Amino) x , x ~ 0.05-0.09 and C surface (Epoxy) x , x ~ 0.05-0.09, and to obtain functionalized CNTs in highly dispersed condition while minimizing labor and material costs.
To achieve the claimed technical result, a method for producing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) covalently functionalized by molecular fragments with epoxy or amine groups is proposed, including fluorination of the surface of carbon nanotubes, fluorine substitution by the target molecular fragment, and dispersion of CNTs. A distinctive feature of the method is that the powder of non-functionalized nanotubes is treated with fluorine gas, and the substitution reaction with the target molecular fragment is carried out simultaneously with the dispersion of fluorinated CNTs by ultrasonic treatment of the suspension in the reagent solution.
The dispersion is processed by a U3 concentrator with a frequency of 22-44 kHz, a radiation power of at least 30-40 W / cm 2 and a transmitted energy of 0.2-0.8 kW × h / l at a CNT concentration of 1-2 g / l.
The substitution reaction with a molecular fragment with two or more epoxy groups is carried out in a solution of 50% -60% epoxidian resin ED20, 1% -5% epoxynolac resin EN-6, 50% -80% epoxy aliphatic resin DEG-1 in N-methylpyrrolidone or dimethylformamide .
The substitution reaction with a molecular fragment with two or more amino groups is carried out in a solution of 1% -5% diaminodiphenylmethane, diaminodiphenylsulfone, aniline-formaldehyde resin SF-341A, polyaminopolyethylene N-methylpyrrolidone / dimethylformamide.
Thus, the solution to the technical problem and the claimed technical result is achieved using a two-stage scheme of covalent functionalization of CNTs:
CFx, x ~ 0.25-0.3.(1) at the first stage, the CNT powder is activated by treating with gaseous fluorine under optimal conditions that ensure the degree of fluorination of the CNTs to stoichiometry CF x , x ~ 0.25-0.3.
(2) In a second step, fluorinated CNTs are transferred to an amine or epoxy solution. The solution is treated with an ultrasonic concentrator at room temperature with the required power and the required time. It is known that ultrasonic treatment is currently one of the best methods for dispersing nanoparticles, while also being an activator of chemical reactions. As a result, the product in the form of functionalized CNTs is obtained in a well dispersed state.

The implementation of the invention
In order to facilitate a more complete understanding of the invention, the following are specific examples of procedures for activating CNTs by fluorine treatment and covalent functionalization of nanotubes with epoxy groups or amino groups. However, the scope of the invention is not limited to the specific implementations given in the examples, which are presented here only for illustration.
The inventive process is carried out in two stages:
(1) на первом этапе процесса проводится активирование графена, образующего стенку нанотрубки, обработкой порошка УНТ в газообразном фторе. При этом условия обработки подбираются таким образом, что достигается максимальная степень фторирования (активирования) поверхностных атомов без разрушения структуры УНТ. Выделение продукта реакции - фторированных нанотрубок (УНТ-F) - не представляет труда в отличие от проведения такой реакции активирования в жидкой среде;(1) at the first stage of the process, graphene, which forms the wall of the nanotube, is activated by treating the CNT powder in fluorine gas. In this case, the processing conditions are selected in such a way that the maximum degree of fluorination (activation) of surface atoms is achieved without destroying the CNT structure. Isolation of the reaction product - fluorinated nanotubes (CNT-F) - is not difficult, in contrast to conducting such an activation reaction in a liquid medium;
(2) the fluorine substitution for the desired functional group is then carried out in a solution of epoxy resin or amines using conventional commercial solvents; the substitution reaction is carried out during intensive processing of the reaction mass with an ultrasonic concentrator, which simultaneously provides a high dispersion of the final product and protects the nanotubes from crosslinking with each other with the formation of aggregates during the reaction.
To illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of fluorine substitution reactions under the conditions described in the application, epoxy resins representing the most common types were selected as reagents: (D) aliphatic - DEG-1, (ii) diane - ED-20, (iii) novolac - EN-6. Similarly, the representatives of the most well-known types of amines used as hardeners of epoxy resins were selected as reagents: (i) primary aromatic - diaminodiphenylmethane (DADPM), diaminodiphenylsulfone (DADPS), (ii) primary polyamines-polyethylenepolyamine (PEPA), anilino-formaldehyde resin SF-341A.

The CNT powder is preheated in a vacuum oven to T = 170 ° C and held for 1 hour to remove adsorbed substances. Next, a weighed sample of CNT powder weighing 0.5-1.0 g is poured into a reactor made of Monel with a volume of 200 cm 3 or more, the reactor is evacuated and gaseous fluorine is introduced into it to a pressure P F2 ~ 0.5-0.8 atm. After starting fluorine, the reactor begins to slowly heat up at a speed of no more than 3 ° C / min to a temperature of 190 ° C and the reactor is maintained at this temperature for 3 hours. Then the atmosphere from the reactor is downloaded, the reactor is cooled to room temperature. After cooling, the reactor is filled with an external atmosphere, the product is extracted and weighed.
In Fig. Figure 2 shows the SEM image of the SWCNT80 product after fluorination. It can be seen that the geometric shape of the nanotubes has been preserved. In Fig. Figure 3 shows the absorption spectra of the product SWCNT80 before and after fluorination. The complete absence of specific absorption bands in the near IR for the product SWCNT80-P indicates a high degree of covalent functionalization of the wall of the nanotubes.
80.In SWCNT samples of electric arc synthesis with a specific surface of ~ 350-400 m 2 / g or more, the fraction of surface atoms is more than 30-40%. Under the condition of fluorination of C surface atoms to fluorine stoichiometry C surfacc F x , x ~ 0.5, the mass gain of the sample will be ~ 30% -40%. This makes it possible to find optimal fluorination conditions on carbon nanoparticle samples with a high specific surface by measuring the weight gain of the sample using a simple weighting method, which significantly reduces the analytical work on chemical analysis for fluorine. In Fig. Figure 4 shows the dependence of the weight gain of the SWCNT80 sample in the process of fluorination on the fluorination temperature with other identical controlled parameters. The SWCNT80-P stoichiometry was calculated by the weight gain of the product before and after fluorination, as well as on the basis of elemental analysis of the product for fluorine [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2009]. The result in both cases for SWCNT80-P was: CF x , x ~ 0.35 and for the product CNT90T: CF x , x ~ 0.25. The difference in stoichiometry is explained by the lower specific surface of CNT90T compared to SWCNT80.
The optimal fluorination conditions depend on the degree of imperfection of the CNT surface, which, in turn, is determined by the product synthesis technology and subsequent processing techniques, if they are used for additional purification of the material from metals and other impurity nanoparticles. Since the degree of fluorination of the product increases with increasing partial pressure of fluorine [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2009], it is advisable to choose the fluorine pressure as high as possible under the existing technological limitations. This will ensure that SWCNTs minimize the contribution of side reactions of carbon gasification, that is, minimal product losses. Further optimization of the fluorination process in temperature and time for SWCNTs and thin MWCNTs with a high specific surface area of more than 300 m 2 / g is easy to carry out by varying these parameters and determining the maximum weight gain of the product during the fluorination process. This approach to the selection of controlled parameters of the fluorination process allows us to maximize the structure of SWCNTs and MWCNTs, regardless of the degree of imperfection of their surface.
It is known from the literature that only a small fraction of fluorine attached to nanotubes can be replaced by other functional groups, that is, stoichiometry of functionalized CNT-R, R is a molecular fragment containing an epoxy group or an amino group, in fact, it looks like: CF z R x where x - stoichiometry of the product according to the functional group and z - residual fluorine content in the product after the substitution reaction.
According to our data (Table 3, see below), the value of x typically does not exceed ~ 0.03. Elemental analysis shows that the residual fluorine content in the product after the substitution reaction varies from 0% to 4%, that is, the z value does not exceed ~ 0.025. Thus, the total amount of substituted fluorine and remaining in the product after the substitution reaction is (x + z) ~ 0.05, which is significantly less than the initial degree of fluorination of CNTs: t ~ 0.25-0.3. This means that under our conditions, the bulk of the fluorine during the reaction “shakes off” from the surface of the CNT and is lost.
All known literature data also confirm the fact that the degree of functionalization of nanotubes in fluorine substitution reactions in CNT-F, according to XPS data, usually does not exceed ~ 0.06, that is, it always remains much less than the initial degree of fluorination. It should be borne in mind that the degree of functionalization measured by the XPS method belongs to the surface C-atom (C surface ). The degree of functionalization of surface C atoms, x surface , is related to the stoichiometry of the product x by the formula: x surface = x / a , where a is the fraction of surface atoms in a given nanomaterial. The value of a can be calculated by the formula: a = S Ud.external. / S ud.graph. , S beats ext. - the external specific surface of the nanomaterial, for SWCNT80 it is ~ 350 m 2 / g, and S beats . graph. = 1360 m 2 / g - specific surface of graphene (one side). Thus, in our experiments, we take a = 0.26, that is, the degree of functionalization of surface C atoms is much higher than that calculated in the stoichiometric composition of the product.
Единственное отличие состояло в том, что во время УЗ-обработки активный реагент отсутствовал в дисперсионной среде полностью или частично (в случае ЭД20).Table 2 shows the data on the loss of fluorine during ultrasonic treatment (ultrasonic treatment) of the dispersion of fluorinated SWCNT80-F and CNT90T-F in various dispersion media. The conditions for ultrasonic treatment of the dispersion were taken exactly the same as described below in the reactions of substitution of fluorine for epoxy or amine groups. The only difference was that during the ultrasonic treatment the active reagent was absent in the dispersion medium completely or partially (in the case of ED20).
а) , mОСУНТ-F и mОСУНТ- - масса нанотрубок до и после УЗ-обработки, соответственно.but) , m SWCNT-F and m SWCNT- are the mass of nanotubes before and after ultrasonic treatment, respectively.
Единственным исключением является УЗ-обработка ОСУНТ80-F в N-метилпирролидоне и диметилформамиде, где выход продукта оказался существенно выше, чем в других дисперсионных средах и достигает ~0.94-0,95.From Table 2 it is seen that the yield of the CNT-F product after ultrasonic treatment in an inert medium is Y US = 0.78-0.82. Even when 5% ED20 is added to the dispersion medium (line 6), the product yield remains low — only 0.82. The only exception is the ultrasonic treatment of SWCNT80-F in N-methylpyrrolidone and dimethylformamide, where the product yield was significantly higher than in other dispersion media and reaches ~ 0.94-0.95.
This phenomenon required a special study, the results of which were published in [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2018]. It turned out that fluorine atoms that “shake” from the surface of fluorinated CNTs during ultrasonic treatment in an inert solvent or reaction medium, but do not participate in the substitution reaction, form complexes or fluorinated products of an undetermined structure. These by-products are poorly soluble in N-methylpyrrolidone and acetone; therefore, even with thorough washing, they cannot be completely removed from the dispersed product. For this reason, the yield during ultrasonic treatment of SWCNT-F in N-methylpyrrolidone is overestimated. The most unpleasant thing is that these products are able to participate in the curing reaction of amines, which can lead to an incorrect interpretation of the effect of using fluorinated CNTs in epoxy resins. A simple solution to the problem was the addition of a small amount of pyridine (Py) to N-methylpyrrolidone. The fluorination by-products in the presence of pyridine are completely removed both from N-methylpyrrolidone and from solutions of epoxides in N-methylpyrrolidone.
When carrying out the reaction in amine solutions, the effect of adding pyridine was not found [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2018]. However, its addition to the reaction medium in this case can also help to remove by-products of the reaction, protecting the reacting amine.
В. Крестинин и др., 2018].The presence of weakly bound fluorine on the surface of fluorinated CNT-F complicates the calculation of the degree of functionalization of nanotubes by measuring the gain in substitution reactions. However, for the practical application of the production technology of functionalized CNTs, it is important to have fairly simple quantitative methods to determine the degree of functionalization of the resulting product. This can be done approximately as follows [A.V. Krestinin et al., 2018].
По этой причине в дальнейшем мы эту малую часть неактивного фтора не учитываем в расчетах, полагая z=0.Let us imagine the stoichiometry of the initial product of CNT-F fluorinated nanotubes in the following form: CF t , t = x + y + z, where x is the part of fluorine that is active in the substitution reaction, y is the weakly bound part of fluorine that “shakes off” under conditions of ultrasonic treatment from the wall of the nanotube and does not participate in the reaction, z is the part of fluorine that remains intact and does not participate in the reaction. The inactive part of fluorine is most likely located inside the nanotubes, getting into them at the stage of fluorination of SWCNTs, since the CNT samples used by us had open ends of nanotubes: the available internal volume of the SWCNT80 and CNT90T nanotubes was ~ 0.2-0.3 cm 3 / g [Krestinin et al. . 2015]. For this reason, in the future we do not take into account this small part of inactive fluorine in the calculations, assuming z = 0.
In this approximation, the reaction of substitution of fluorine for an amino group or an epoxy group can be written as follows:
AR - активный реагент;AR is an active reagent;
R - функциональная группа.R is a functional group.
The chemical reaction (R2) of fluorine removal, carried out under the same conditions, but in the absence of an active AR reagent, is written as follows:
For the outputs of the reactions (R1) and (R2): Y R1 and Y R2 - we obtain the following expressions:
здесь - μR - эффективная молекулярная масса присоединенного фрагмента, включающего эпоксидную группу или аминогруппу;here - μ R is the effective molecular weight of the attached fragment comprising an epoxy group or an amino group;
атомная масса углерода - 12 г/моль;the atomic mass of carbon is 12 g / mol;
атомная масса фтора - 19 г/моль.the atomic mass of fluorine is 19 g / mol.
AR.In cases where the AR reagent is a diamine (e.g., DADPM, etc.) or a molecule with two epoxy groups (e.g., ED-20, etc.), μ R can be considered equal to the molecular weight of the AR reagent.
Based on the data in Table 2, we take approximately the value of Y R2 = 0.8. That is, it is assumed that under the given conditions of ultrasonic treatment for SWCNT-F samples obtained under the same conditions, the fraction of the lost fluorine у will be constant and independent of the type of dispersion medium.
By measuring the reaction yield Y R1 and solving the system of equations (1) we find the values of x and y.
Необходимо дополнительное уравнение для определения трех неизвестных величин х, у и μR.In the case when the AR reagent is a polyamine (for example, novolac resin SF341A, polyethylene polyamine PEPA, etc.) or a molecule with a large number of epoxy groups (EN-6), the value of μ R remains unknown. An additional equation is needed to determine the three unknown quantities x, y, and μ R.
(R3):We use an additional control reaction (R3) for this:
здесь D в молекуле BD - аминогруппа для случая R = эпоксигруппа, и D - эпоксигруппа, для случая R ≡ аминогруппа.here D in the BD molecule is an amino group for the case R = an epoxy group, and D is an epoxy group, for the case R is an amino group.
To yield the product Y R3 in the reaction (R3) we obtain:
BD.Here μ BD is the molecular weight of the BD reagent.
Напротив, в случае ОСУНТ-ДАДФМ оба водорода терминальной аминогруппы ДАДФМ оказываются активными в реакции с ЭД-20 (Таблица 3, строка 4) и величина х меньше, чем величина w.If a diamine or a molecule with terminal epoxy groups is used in reaction (R1), the values of μ R and x are known. In this case, the solution of equation (2) gives the value w - the degree of functionalization of CNTs by active functional groups. The degree of functionalization x calculated by the gain in the reaction (R1) may be greater than the value w if some of the functional groups are deactivated for any reason under the conditions of the reaction (R1). For example, this can be seen in Table 3 for SWCNT-ED20 (line 1). In contrast, in the case of SWCNT-DADPM, both hydrogens of the terminal amino group DADPM are active in the reaction with ED-20 (Table 3, line 4) and the x value is less than the w value.
3.In the case of a polyamine and a polyepoxide molecule, two unknowns remain in equation (2): μ R and w. If now we additionally accept the equality x = w, then the system of equations (1) - (2) can be solved with respect to μ R , y and w. In this case, the degree of functionalization of CNTs by active functional groups and the effective equivalent mass per active group are determined. The relevant data are presented in Table 3.

(R1).Preparing 20 g of a solution of 60% ED20 / N-MP with the addition of a few drops of pyridine. 40 mg of SWCNT-F is introduced into the solution, thoroughly mixed. Next, the dispersion is processed by an ultrasonic concentrator for 10 minutes with cooling the glass with running water (22 kHz, emitter area 1.5 cm 2 , the radiation density of ultrasonic energy on the emitter ~ 30 W / cm 2 ). Nanotubes are isolated from the reaction medium in a suitable way: by deposition on a centrifuge or on a filter, a track membrane, 1 μm. Next, the product is washed with acetone. The stoichiometry of the obtained product for surface C atoms: C surface - (ED20) x ; x = 0.059 (Table 3). In Fig. 5 shows a snapshot of the product in a scanning electron microscope. In Fig. Figure 6 shows the mass loss of an SWCNT80-epoxy sample upon heating in an argon atmosphere. Calculation of the stoichiometry of the sample by mass loss gives x ~ 0.017, which is close to the value obtained in Table 3 by calculation by the gain in the reaction (R1): x ~ 0.015. The control reaction gives the degree of functionalization with active epoxy groups w = 0.01 - lower than by gain in the reaction (R1).
Example 3. The manufacture of CNTs functionalized with epoxy groups in reaction with novolac resin.
Preparing 20 g of a solution of 5% EN6 / N-MP with the addition of a few drops of pyridine. 40 mg of CNT-F is introduced into the solution, thoroughly mixed. Next, the dispersion is processed by an ultrasonic concentrator for 10 minutes with cooling the glass with running water (22 kHz, emitter area 1.5 cm 2 , the radiation density of ultrasonic energy on the emitter ~ 30 W / cm 2 ). Nanotubes are isolated from the reaction mixture in an appropriate way: by precipitation on a centrifuge or on a filter, a track membrane, 1 μm, is washed with acetone. In Fig. 7 shows a snapshot of the product SWCNT80-EN6 in a scanning electron microscope. The stoichiometry of the obtained product at surface C-atoms: C surface - (epoxy) x , x = 0.092 (Table 3). In Fig. Figure 8 shows a typical dispersion of an SWCNT-EN6 in an epoxy resin solution. The dark areas in the photographs are microparticles of the nanotube gel in solution, which are easily destroyed by stirring. This means that the SWCNT-EP6 gel in the epoxy composition does not “age”.
In Fig. Figure 9 shows the results of bending tests of flat fiberglass specimens with LBS-1 nanomodified bakelite varnish based on a solution of phenol-formaldehyde resin of a resol type in ethanol. The nanomodifiers OSUNT80-DEG and UNT90T-DEG were tested, prepared by the functionalization of the products OSUNT80 and UNT90T. The concentration of the nanomodifier in the resin in both cases was 0.1%. Tests have shown that the flexural strength of carbon fiber in both cases increased approximately equally by 42-45%. At the same time, the rms spread of the data decreased several times compared to the control sample.
Example 4. The manufacture of CNTs functionalized by amino groups in reaction with aromatic diamine.
Стехиометрия полученного продукта по поверхностным С-атомам: Csurface-(ДАДФМ)x, х=0.042 (Таблица 3).Preparing 20 g of a solution of 5% DADPM / N-MP with the addition of a few drops of pyridine. 40 mg of CNT-F is introduced into the solution, thoroughly mixed. Next, the dispersion is processed by an ultrasonic concentrator for 10 minutes with cooling the glass with running water (22 kHz, emitter area 1.5 cm 2 , ultrasonic energy radiation density at the emitter ~ 30 W / cm 2. ) Nanotubes are separated from the reaction mixture in a suitable way: by precipitation on a centrifuge or on a filter, a track membrane, 1 μm, is washed with acetone. The stoichiometry of the obtained product at surface C-atoms: C surface - (DADPM) x , x = 0.042 (Table 3).
граф.=1360 м2/г - удельная поверхность графена (одна сторона). a) The degree of functionalization of surface C-atoms (C surface ), x surface , is calculated by the formula: x surface = x / a , where x is the stoichiometry of the product, and = 0.26 is the fraction of surface atoms in this nanomaterial. The value of a is determined by the formula: a = S beats / S beats graph. , S beats is the external specific surface of the nanomaterial, for SWCNT80 it is ~ 350 m 2 / g, and S beats . graph. = 1360 m 2 / g - specific surface of graphene (one side).
б) Условия проведения контрольной реакции: нагрев до 160°С и выдержка в течение 3 часов. b) Conditions for the control reaction: heating to 160 ° C and holding for 3 hours.
