Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of rocket and space technology, and more specifically relates to the design of electric propulsion engines of spacecraft with a variable specific impulse of thrust in the range from 500 to more than 10 thousand seconds.
Various methods are known from the state of the art for creating thrust and design of electro-reactive plasma engines, including those with magnetic isolation of the walls of the plasma channel and with a magnetic nozzle, which makes them potentially suitable for operation with powers of more than 100 kW in stationary mode. It should be noted the well-known VASIMR engine (US 6334302 B1, published 01.01.2002), in which a plasma ionizes a longitudinal magnetic field by a high-frequency helicon discharge, then enters a magnetic nozzle, where the plasma ion component is selectively heated in cyclotron resonance and accelerated by diamagnetic force, forming jet stream. By changing the specific contribution of power in the cyclotron resonance, it is possible to achieve a change in the velocity of the plasma and, therefore, the specific impulse of thrust. There are other designs with radio frequency heating and a magnetic nozzle, for example US 6293090 B1, publ. 09/25/2001; WO 2013098505 A1, publ. 07/04/2013). All of these structures use radio-frequency heating of magnetized plasma, which has the following drawback: complete plasma ionization and a sufficiently high ion temperature are required. This means that the power spent on ionizing the working fluid is wasted and useless. engine with a specific impulse of less than 3000 s low. In addition, the efficiency decreases due to losses in the generation and absorption of radio waves. An alternative would be an engine design with electric arc plasma heating, but in this case, the disadvantage is the fast erosion of the electrodes due to the high discharge current and the fragility of the structure. The method of creating traction in all these cases is similar and based on the transformation of the transverse (to the magnetic field) motion of the magnetized plasma particles into their directed motion in the magnetic nozzle. Additional thrust can also be created in the magnetic nozzle due to the acceleration of ions at the difference in the electrostatic potential of the plasma.
The closest in design to the claimed invention is the magnetoplasdynamic accelerator MPDU (Kubarev Yu.V. Source of gas-discharge plasma, USSR author's certificate 166974 of 04.02.63, patent RU 2472324 C2, published on 03.20.2012), in which plasma ionization, heating and acceleration axisymmetric design with a longitudinal magnetic field and a magnetic nozzle occur in a complex gas discharge, burning, including, across the main magnetic field. In this engine, the working gas is supplied through a hollow cathode located on the axis of the system in the ionization chamber, and the anode rings are located at the periphery, both in the ionization chamber and in the expanding part of the nozzle. The design is very simple, but because of this is not effective enough. Since the author of the MPDU refers to the complex author’s nature of the discharge, and the method of creating traction in this case is not entirely clear, the criticism is based on the law of conservation of momentum. The jet pulse in the MPDU can be transmitted either to the magnetic field of the nozzle (as well as to the back wall via hot gas pressure), or to the electrodes through an electric field. In the first case, an increase in the specific impulse requires an increase in the plasma temperature and the associated erosion and loss, since the magnetic nozzle is similar to the Laval nozzle in the way it works. And in the second case, the generated thrust per unit cross-sectional area of the engine will be very low, as in ion engines. In the claimed invention, these problems are solved by incorporating an electromagnetic plasma accelerator in the structure between the ionization chamber and the nozzle, in which the magnetic field has a spiral corrugation, and the plasma is accelerated without significant heating with the transfer of momentum to the magnetic system of the accelerator. The author of this invention suggests calling it “screw” by analogy with the principle of operation with a screw pump. In addition, unlike MPDU, where the axial electrode is the cathode, and the peripheral is the anode, in the claimed invention it is possible to change the polarity of the electrodes while changing the sign of the magnetic field, as well as finer adjustment to change the operating mode of the “screw” accelerator and specific engine thrust impulse during operation.
Plasma or ion engines with spiral corrugation of a longitudinal magnetic field in the engine channel, which is a sign of a screw-type accelerator, were not detected.
"Tokamak rotation sources transport and sinks", Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, V. 51, 2009, p. 124047), The magnetic field has helical corrugation in closed toroidal systems of magnetic confinement of a thermonuclear plasma of the “tokamak” type. The plasma in the tokamak rotates in two directions, toroidal and poloidal, which can be represented as a combination of rotation in crossed electric and magnetic fields and flow along the lines of force. The rotation is usually associated with a self-consistent radial ambipolar electric field, but it can be substantially changed by injection of the angular momentum with particle beams. Experimentally, there is a relationship and interconversion of the toroidal and poloidal components of plasma rotation (deGrassie JS "Tokamak rotation sources transport and sinks", Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, V. 51, 2009, p. 124047), which can be interpreted as an analog of the transformation of rotation into translational motion plasma in a “screw” accelerator.
(A.D. Beklemishev, Fusion Science and Technology, V63 1T, 2013, p. 355).The transformation of rotation into translational motion of a plasma in a field with spiral corrugation was previously proposed by the author as a method of pumping plasma along a magnetic field and a method of improving longitudinal confinement in multi-tube linear magnetic traps (AD Beklemishev, Fusion Science and Technology, V63 1T, 2013, p. 355 )
A method of creating reactive thrust by accelerating a rotating plasma in a spiral-corrugated magnetic field has not been identified.
п.д. The task to which the claimed invention is directed is to create a megawatt-class electric jet engine design that would be able to provide high thrust operation in modes with a variable specific jet impulse from 500 to 10,000 seconds, with high efficiency . a long time.
This problem is solved in that the design of a plasma electric jet engine, designed primarily for work in space, contains an ionization chamber at the inlet for supplying and primary ionization of the working fluid, an outlet magnetic nozzle for accelerating the plasma flow and for detaching the jet from the magnetic field, as well as at least two electrodes connected to an external source of electric current, one of which is located on the axis of the ionization chamber, and the other is made in the form of a ring covering the plasma flow. In contrast to the closest analogue, MPDU, in the claimed design between the ionization chamber and the nozzle there is a “screw” electromagnetic plasma accelerator containing a longitudinal accelerator channel surrounded by single or multiple winding windings with current or a solenoid with screw ferromagnetic inserts creating longitudinal in the accelerator channel magnetic field with single or multiple helical corrugation. In addition to the electrodes, an antenna can be located in the ionization chamber to create a helicon or electron-cyclotron discharge, connected to a separate high-frequency power source. The design of a plasma electric jet engine implements one of the variants of the method of creating jet thrust using a "screw" accelerator. This method of creating reactive thrust is characterized in that the working fluid in the plasma state is accelerated along the magnetic field in the channel of the “screw” accelerator by bringing it into rotation in crossed longitudinal magnetic and radial electric fields, the magnetic field being created with single or multiple helical corrugation , with a step that is constant or increasing in the direction of plasma acceleration, and the electric field is supported by electrodes connected to a current source, one of which is on the magnetic axis, and d ugoy covers plasma. This creates the conditions for the conversion of rotation into translational acceleration during diamagnetic plasma capture in the spiral zones of low magnetic field. The rate of plasma acceleration along the channel, reactive thrust, and specific impulse of the system are controlled by the value and polarity of the voltage applied to the electrodes, the value and sign of the magnetic field in the accelerator channel, and the density and state of the plasma at the entrance to the accelerator.
The invention is further explained in the description and drawing.
The drawing shows a diagram of the magnetic surface of a plasma electric propulsion engine with a screw accelerator. The plasma from the
The technical result provided by the given set of features is the long-term stationary operation of the megawatt-class electric jet engine with high efficiency and variable in the process of specific impulse.
When designing a high-power engine (more than 100 kW) on a working substance with a large atomic mass for magnetizing ions, the electromagnetic system must be designed to permanently maintain a magnetic field of the order of 1T. This is possible when using high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) in the design. It should also take into account the possibility of the appearance of a small axial moment of force created by a working engine due to the rotation of the jet jet plasma. To compensate for it, engines, in particular, can be used in pairs (with opposite directions of the magnetic field and helicity of the corrugation). Such an arrangement will also allow the closure of most of the magnetic flux from the magnetic system of the engines.
The invention can be used as the main thrust engine for interorbital maneuvering, flights to the moon and interplanetary flights.
