Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of nuclear engineering, and more specifically to methods for the disposal of radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) that have spent their service life, containing radionuclide heat sources (RIT) based on strontium-90 with an activity of 5000 ÷ 350,000 Ci.
In order to ensure radiation safety, according to the current regulatory documents, when decommissioning RTGs, it is necessary to remove the RHT sources from the RTG design, preserve them and take them to the place of burial of radioactive waste.
Due to the high radiation activity of strontium-90 sources, RTGs are disassembled in a hot chamber, radionuclide heat sources (RITs) are separated, then RITs are vitrified and buried.
Due to the fact that the uranium, from which the details of the RIT radiation protection block are made, interacts with the moisture of the air that inadvertently enters some RTGs, a chemical reaction occurs in which hydrogen is released, and the protection block breaks and cracks appear in it. As a result, the radiation intensity from the RIT ampoule with strontium increases. RHS with shattered protection cannot be transported to the burial site.
10.07.1999 г.).A known method of decommissioning, temporary storage and further disposal of radiation hazardous facilities, which carry out the extraction of spent fuel assemblies and disposal in a radiation hazardous compartment filled with solid mixture (RF patent 2133062, G21F 9/28, published on July 10, 1999) .
The disadvantage of this method is the difficulty of transportation and the high cost of the burial volume due to the large dimensions of the radiation hazardous facility.
10.02.2007 г.).A known method of forming a radiation-protective block packaging for installation onshore storage (RF patent 2293386, G21F 9/34, publ. 02/10/2007).
When implementing the known method, a comprehensive engineering survey of the disposal object is carried out, the fuel elements are removed, the hardening mixture is laid inside the protective shell, an atomic steam conducting installation is cut out over the protective shell perimeter of the protective shell, the watertight bulkheads are welded on four sides, they are tested for leaks, applied anticorrosive coating and transported to the storage place.
The disadvantages of the method include the large mass dimensions and the unreliability of the preservation of the fuel elements by hardening mixtures, due to breaks in the mixture with hydrogen released during the interaction of residual moisture and air in the structures of the fuel elements, which leads to the destruction of biological protection and to the violation of radiation safety.
Б. Closest to the claimed one is a method for utilization of RTGs based on heat sources, which consists in a comprehensive engineering survey of a spent resource or an emergency RTG, determination of dose fields and removal of fuel elements for their subsequent disposal. At the same time, the RTG to be disposed of is disassembled in a hot chamber, radionuclide sources of heat based on Sr-90 (RIT-90) are extracted from the RTG and loaded into special containers. The containers are transported to Mayak Production Center, where the RIT blocks are removed from transport containers and stored in sealed cans of vitrified waste from nuclear fuel reprocessing in a special storage facility (Rules for the operation and decommissioning of radionuclide power plants based on radionuclide heat sources on strontium-90. Approved by the First Deputy Minister of the Russian Federation for Atomic Energy VB Ivanov in 1999).
The disadvantage of this method is the high complexity of the extraction of RHS in the hot chamber, as well as the inapplicability of this method to emergency and problem RTGs, that is, to those from which it is impossible to remove RHS blocks in the hot chamber due to damage to the details of the RTG construction.
The technical result obtained by the implementation of the proposed method consists in providing the ability to dispose of emergency and problematic RTGs that have damaged structural parts, which does not allow to extract individual RIT blocks or several blocks for separate burial, to reduce the complexity of disposal, to reduce dose loads on personnel and increased job security.
The specified technical result is achieved due to the fact that in the proposed method for the disposal of RTGs from the RTGs, the entire radiation thermal block (RTB) with all the thermal elements (RIT) and radiation protection from the depleted uranium is removed, the RTB is placed in a container, rigidly fixed in it, brewed the lid of the container, then the container is evacuated, then it is filled with an inert gas (for example, argon), pumping and filling with argon are repeated several times to obtain stable low values of H 2 and O 2 in s leaving the internal atmosphere of the container, seal the container and transport to the place of burial.
As an example of the implementation of the claimed method, the process of disposal of an RTG having external damage to the housing is described.
At an acceptable level of radiation of external radiation open the case. If it is discovered that, due to damage to the radiation protection parts, the RIT units in the hot chamber cannot be removed from the radiation protection unit, then a sealed container is made in the form of a can with dimensions that can be placed in the storage cell at the Mayak Production Plant. Having made a sealed container and devices for fixing the RTB inside the container, the RTB is cut from the heat pipe to the radiator and placed inside the container. Fasten with the help of devices. The container is brewed hermetically. Air is pumped out of the container through a special nozzle to a vacuum of 10 -3 mm Hg. Fill the container with argon. Stand for several days. Gas samples are taken. Perform gas analysis for oxygen and hydrogen. The process of pumping and filling is repeated to the concentrations of H 2 <1% and O 2 <1% and stabilization of this value over time. After this, the container fitting is brewed. Install a sealed container in a certified shipping container and send it to Mayak for disposal.
