Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of production of radioactive isotopes, namely to the production of a palladium-103 radionuclide at a cyclotron using a beam of charged particles.
К недостаткам следует также отнести сравнительно высокую стоимость продукта, обусловленную, в основном, значительными затратами на получение высокообогащенного палладия-102.A known method for producing palladium-103 by irradiating palladium-enriched palladium-102 with a neutron flux in a nuclear reactor (US Patent No. 4702228, NKI 600/8. Interstitial implants emitting x-ray radiation. Published 10/27/1987). But such sources have several disadvantages due to the method of producing palladium-103. The disadvantages of the method of producing palladium-103 in a nuclear reactor are the relatively low specific activity (up to 100 mCi / mg), since only a small part of the atoms of the irradiated material passes into the target radionuclide. Currently, the maximum degree of enrichment of palladium-102 reaches only 70-80%, therefore, due to the presence of other isotopes of palladium, radionuclides palladium-101 and palladium-109 are formed, which cannot be separated by chemical means. Before using palladium-103, exposure is necessary for the decay of other palladium radionuclides, which leads to the loss of palladium-103 radionuclide due to radioactive decay during exposure. In addition, as a result of irradiation, radionuclides of other elements are also formed, for example, silver-111, separation from which is not an easy task. If micro sources are used without purification from silver-111, then this will lead to an additional dose load. The disadvantages should also include the relatively high cost of the product, due mainly to the significant costs of obtaining highly enriched palladium-102.
A known method of producing palladium-103, which consists in irradiating targets from the enriched Pd-104, Pd-105, Pd-106 isotopes or their mixtures with 10-50 MeV protons or deuterons (US Patent No. 6143431, NKI 428/669; IPC G21G 1/10. Preparation of Palladium-103. Published 07.11.2000). The disadvantages of this method include:
- низкая удельная активность продукта (меньше 100 мКи/мг), что ограничивает срок его годности для изготовления микроисточников;- low specific activity of the product (less than 100 mCi / mg), which limits its shelf life for the manufacture of micro sources;
- потери радионуклида палладий-103 из-за необходимости выдержки после окончания облучения мишени в течение 19 дней для распада примесных радионуклидов палладий-100 и палладий-101;- loss of the palladium-103 radionuclide due to the need for exposure after the end of the irradiation of the target for 19 days for the decay of impurity radionuclides palladium-100 and palladium-101;
- многостадийная технология очистки палладия-103 от примесей.- multistage technology for the purification of palladium-103 from impurities.
A known method of producing a radionuclide palladium-103 with high specific activity (US Patent No. 5,405,309, NKI 600/3; IPC A61N005 / 00. Interstitial X-ray emitter. Published 04/11/1995). The method consists in irradiating a target on an accelerator and subsequent radiochemical processing in order to obtain pure palladium-103. The target is a copper substrate, on which a layer of metallic rhodium (~ 2 g) is deposited by the electrolytic method. The resulting target is irradiated in the accelerator with protons or deuterons with energy at which only one palladium isotope is formed from rhodium - palladium-103, i.e. palladium-103 practically without carrier. Target processing consists of the following stages:
а) металлический родий предварительно механическим способом перфорируют и затем отделяют от подложки растворением последней, например, в азотной кислоте с получением раствора, содержащего чешуйки родия;a) metal rhodium is pre-mechanically perforated and then separated from the substrate by dissolving the latter, for example, in nitric acid to obtain a solution containing rhodium flakes;
б) чешуйки родия извлекают на бумажный фильтр, промывают. Фильтр с родием помещают в муфельную печь и нагревают для разложения фильтра;b) the rhodium flakes are removed on a paper filter, washed. The rhodium filter is placed in a muffle furnace and heated to decompose the filter;
в) чешуйки родия сплавляют в муфельной печи с NaHSO4. При этом образуются растворимые в разбавленной соляной кислоте соли родия. Для полного растворения родия операцию повторяют несколько раз;c) the rhodium flakes are fused in a muffle furnace with NaHSO 4 . In this case, rhodium salts soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid are formed. To completely dissolve the rhodium, the operation is repeated several times;
Палладий-носитель добавляют в исходный раствор родия для уменьшения потерь палладия-103 при его очистке.d) a palladium carrier is added to a solution containing rhodium salts and palladium-103 is isolated from the solution on a column with anion exchange resin. Palladium-103 is eluted from the column with NH 4 OH solution. The palladium carrier is added to the rhodium stock solution to reduce the loss of palladium-103 upon purification.
As shown by the experiments of the authors of the claimed technical solution, it is impossible to completely wash the palladium-103 column without a carrier and up to 50% of the activity of the radionuclide remain on the column. Apparently, this is due to the reduction of palladium. The restoration of palladium on organic sorbents was also noted in the work of Burmistrova N.M. (Burmistrova N.M. Reactions of complexation of palladium in sorption processes. Author. Abstract of thesis. Candidate of Chemical Sciences. St. Petersburg, 2000). The main disadvantages of the described method are the high complexity of the process and the use of low-tech operations (filtering, sintering in a muffle furnace), as well as the addition of a palladium carrier, which reduces the shelf life of the product for the manufacture of micro sources.
Closest to the proposed technical solution is a method for producing palladium-103 without a carrier (V.I. Levin and others. Obtaining palladium-103 without a carrier and preparing a radioactive colloidal preparation of palladium for medical purposes // Radiochemistry. 1971. V.13, issue. 4, pp. 622-627.), Which consists in irradiating metallic rhodium with protons or deuterons accelerated at the cyclotron, electrochemical dissolution of the irradiated target, and subsequent chemical isolation of palladium-103. The target was a copper substrate to which a plate of rhodium metal was diffusion-welded. Rhodium was separated by dissolving the copper substrate in nitric acid. Then, rhodium was dissolved in 6 M hydrochloric acid using alternating current. The solution was diluted to 1 M with HCl, a solution of dimethylglyoxime was added, and palladium-103 was extracted into chloroform as dimethylglyoximate. Chloroform was evaporated to dryness, the obtained residue was repeatedly treated with aqua regia and hydrogen peroxide to decompose organic substances. Upon completion of the decomposition of organic substances, the solution was evaporated to dryness and the residue was dissolved in 0.5 M HCl with heating. The described method was tested by the authors of the proposed technical solution to obtain small amounts of palladium-103 (up to 100 mCi). When processing highly active targets (activity in a target of several tens of Curie), the following disadvantages of the method were revealed:
1) при длительном облучении мишени для получения больших количеств палладия-103 из конструкционных материалов циклотрона на поверхность мишени напыляется железо, из которого затем образуется радионуклид кобальт-56, который диффундирует в материал мишени - родий. Кроме того, родий приварен к медной подложке методом диффузионной сварки. Поэтому растворением подложки в азотной кислоте не удается удалить полностью из родия железо, медь и образующиеся из них при облучении на циклотроне радионуклиды, а наличие железа и меди приводит к нестабильности процесса экстракции (существенному колебанию выхода продукта);1) during prolonged irradiation of the target in order to obtain large amounts of palladium-103 from structural materials of the cyclotron, iron is sprayed onto the target surface, from which cobalt-56 radionuclide is then formed, which diffuses into the target material — rhodium. In addition, rhodium is welded to the copper substrate by diffusion welding. Therefore, by dissolving the substrate in nitric acid, it is not possible to completely remove iron, copper, and radionuclides formed from them during irradiation at the cyclotron, and the presence of iron and copper leads to instability of the extraction process (a substantial variation in the yield of the product);
2) it is also not possible to completely remove organic matter. As a result of this, upon receipt of the product in a small volume, a precipitate forms, and in some cases a thin transparent polymer film, which complicates the process of evaporation of the solution to dryness in order to convert palladium-103 into commercial form.
Apparently, this is due to the fact that significant amounts of organic substances are used in the extraction of palladium-103: chloroform - up to 1 l and dimethylglyoxime ~ 0.5-0.6 g. Evaporation of chloroform takes a long time, therefore, in the presence of chloroform palladium-103 in the amount of several tens of Curie polymerization processes may occur with the formation of difficult to decompose compounds. The above affects the quality of the product and creates problems when using it. To eliminate this drawback, it is necessary to reduce the amount of organic substances used in the process of radionuclide release, and to reduce the contact time of organic substances with radioactive substances.
The authors were faced with the task of eliminating these shortcomings and developing a method for producing a palladium-103 radionuclide without a carrier, providing large quantities of high-quality palladium-103, as well as increasing the yield of the target product and increasing process stability.
To solve this problem, a method for producing a palladium-103 radionuclide without a carrier is provided, which includes irradiating a target from metallic rhodium in an accelerator, electrochemically dissolving an irradiated target in hydrochloric acid, and isolating a palladium-103 radionuclide from the resulting solution, characterized in that isolating a palladium-103 radionuclide from the resulting solution is carried out by sorption on a strongly basic anion exchange resin, followed by elution of palladium-103 with an ammonia solution, and before sorption to a palladium solution adia-103 in hydrochloric acid, an oxidizing agent is added. In the particular case of the method, sorption is carried out on the strongly basic Dowex 1X8 anion exchange resin in the Cl - form. An oxidizing agent is added to each solution during ion-exchange isolation of the palladium-103 radionuclide, for example, potassium bromate can be used.
After sorption, it is advisable to carry out additional purification of the palladium-103 radionuclide by extracting it into chloroform from a solution that is obtained by evaporation of the eluate, followed by dissolving the residue containing palladium-103 in hydrochloric acid, and add alcohol to the solution containing palladium-103 dimethylglyoxime solution.
The technical result of the proposed solution is to ensure high yield and high quality of the product by reducing the amount of organic substances used in the process of isolation of the palladium-103 radionuclide, reducing the contact time of organic substances with radioactive substances and, as a result, reducing the likelihood of formation of difficult decomposable organic compounds, as well as reduction of palladium-103 losses due to recovery.
The inventive method is as follows.
An irradiated metal rhodium target (the mass of rhodium in the target is ~ 2.4-6.0 g) is dissolved electrochemically in 6 M hydrochloric acid using alternating current. The separation of palladium-103 from the main amounts of rhodium is carried out by sorption, passing the initial solution through an ion exchange column with a strongly basic anion exchange resin, for example, Dowex 1X8 in the Cl - form. Before sorption, an oxidizing agent (for example, potassium bromate) is added to the initial solution, which can inhibit the reduction of palladium on the sorbent. In this case, palladium-103 is firmly retained by the sorbent in the form of a chloride complex, and rhodium passes into the eluate during the elution. To remove various impurities, including iron, copper, as well as cobalt-56 and zinc-65 radionuclides, the column is washed first with 6 M hydrochloric acid and then with water, to which the same oxidizing agent is added. Palladium-103 is eluted with a dilute ammonia solution containing an oxidizing agent. The resulting eluate contains a small amount of rhodium (~ 20-40 mg). To remove it, the solution is evaporated to wet salts, then the residue is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid, after which an additional extraction purification of palladium-103 is carried out. The sorption separation of palladium-103 from the main amount of rhodium can significantly reduce the amount of each organic reagent used in the extraction purification of the product, namely: 5 ml of a 1% (wt.) Alcohol solution of the complexing agent are added to the solution to be extracted (~ 40 mg of dimethylglyoxime) and 40-50 ml of chloroform is extracted with palladium. Chloroform is removed by evaporation, and other organic impurities by treatment with aqua regia. The final product is obtained either in the form of a solution in 6 M hydrochloric acid or in an ammonia buffer solution.
Thus, in the process of processing the target, the amount of organic substances used is significantly reduced in comparison with the known methods: chloroform by ~ 20-25 times, dimethylglyoxime - by ~ 12.5-15 times. Accordingly, the time required for evaporation of chloroform and oxidative decomposition of dimethylglyoxime decreases, i.e. reduces the time of exposure to organic matter and thereby reduces the likelihood of formation of hardly decomposable organic compounds.
The proposed technical solution is illustrated by the following examples.

(Illustrates the disadvantages of sorption without the addition of an oxidizing agent).

е. ~54%.A target with a rhodium mass of 2.8 g irradiated on a cyclotron was dissolved in 6 M HCl under the influence of alternating current. The resulting solution was evaporated to 50 ml, allowed to cool and passed through a column filled with 10 ml of Dowex 1X8 sorbent (100-200 mesh), pre-saturated with 6 M HC1. After sorption, the column was washed first with 50 ml of 6 M HCl, then with 50 ml of water. Palladium-103 was eluted with 100 ml of 0.1 M aqueous ammonia. The activity of palladium-103 in the initial solution was 7.13 Ci; 3.87 Ki of palladium-103, isolated from the solution, i.e. ~ 54%.

KBrO3.The target for producing palladium-103 was a copper block (substrate), on the surface of which a 2.48 g mass of rhodium metal was welded. The target was irradiated on the accelerator with protons with an energy of ~ 13.5 MeV. The activity of palladium-103 in the target at the end of irradiation was 38.80 Ci. The rhodium plate was separated from the copper substrate by dissolving the latter in concentrated nitric acid. Rhodium metal was dissolved in 6 M HCl under alternating current. The resulting solution was evaporated to 50 ml, allowed to cool and 5 ml of potassium bromate solution (KBrO 3 ) saturated at room temperature was added. The solution was mixed and passed through a column filled with 10 ml of Dowex 1X8 sorbent (100-200 mesh), pre-saturated with 6 M HCl. The column was washed with a mixture of 45 ml of 6 M HCl and 5 ml of a saturated solution of KBrO 3 .
Then the column was washed with a mixture of 45 ml of water and 5 ml of a saturated solution of KBrO 3 . Palladium-103 was suirable a mixture of solutions containing 90 ml of a 0.1 M aqueous ammonia solution and 10 ml of a saturated solution of KBrO 3 . The palladium-103 eluate was evaporated to wet salts, the residue was dissolved in 50 ml of 0.25 M HCl and 5 ml of a 1% (w / w) alcohol solution of dimethylglyoxime was added. The palladium-103 complex with dimethylglyoxime was extracted into 50 ml of chloroform. Chloroform containing palladium-103 was washed with 30 ml of a 0.25 M HCl solution and then evaporated to dryness. The residue was treated with aqua regia to decompose organic substances. After evaporation, the residue was dissolved in 10 ml of ammonia buffer solution. As a result of processing the irradiated rhodium target, 36.88 Ci were isolated (activity recalculated at the end of irradiation), which amounted to ~ 95% of the initial amount of the radionuclide. The specific activity of the product was 57.0 Ci / mg Pd, the rhodium content was 13.8 μg / ml.
Способ характеризуется стабильностью и высоким выходом радионуклида палладий-103.The proposed method for producing a palladium-103 radionuclide without a carrier makes it possible to obtain a high-quality product by reducing the amount of organic reagents used in the process of palladium-103 isolation and reducing the contact time of organic reagents with radioactive substances. The method is characterized by stability and high yield of palladium-103 radionuclide.
