Abstract
Description
This proposal relates to the field of radio engineering and can be used in direction finding complexes to determine the azimuth of a radio emission source (IRI).
Modern systems for determining the direction to the IRI are constructed using well-known methods of direction finding: amplitude (maximum method, minimum method, comparison method, etc.), phase, frequency and time.
Known methods and devices for direction finding [1-5, 10-19 and others].
For example, a number of direction finding methods are known, based on the fact that the phase relations between signals received at spatially separated points can be converted into the amplitude dependence of the sum of the received signals on the location of the IRI.
The most obvious and widely used is the amplitude direction finding method, which uses an antenna system having a radiation pattern with a pronounced maximum. Due to the mechanical change in the position (orientation) of the antenna, space is scanned, which determines the position of the antenna at which the output signal of the antenna has the maximum amplitude, and the direction coinciding with the maximum of the antenna pattern is taken as the direction to the IRI.
This direction finding method can be considered as a degenerate case of the differential-ranging method, when due to the mechanical movement of the antenna system its position is selected so that the distance differences from the IRI to the symmetrical points of the antenna are zero (and, consequently, the phase differences of the signals arriving at these points were equal to zero). In-phase addition of signals arriving along different paths provides maximum energy at the receiving point.
The main disadvantage of this method is the need for mechanical movement of the antenna system or at least its individual elements (for example, an irradiator).
где r=min(r1,r2).There is also a method of direction finding based on measuring the difference in the time of reception of signals from the IRI by two spaced antennas [for example, 6]. When the position of the IRI deviates from the perpendicular to the center of the base, a difference in the signal path occurs Δr = r 1 -r 2 (r 1 and r 2 are the distances from the IRI to the first and second antennas, respectively). The relative delay of the τ signals, due to the constancy of the speed and linearity of the propagation of radio waves, is proportional to the path difference:
The azimuth value α IRI is calculated by the formula
where d is the distance between the antennas, while
where r = min (r 1 , r 2 ).
In the general case, systems using the considered principle are differential-ranging, however, at large distances of the IRI from the center of the base, when the distance to the IRI is significantly larger than the base, the hyperbolic position lines characteristic of the differential-ranging method practically coincide with their asymptotes emanating in the form of rays from the center of the base. In this case, difference-ranging systems can be considered goniometric.
Direction finding can also be done on the basis of measuring the Doppler frequency offset Δf ∂ [see, for example, 7]. Because the
where λ is the wavelength of the IRI signal,
v r is the radial speed of the IRI relative to the receiving antenna,
then, by measuring Δf ∂ on an extremely small interval, you can get a variant of the frequency method called the Doppler differential, which allows you to determine the value of the angular location parameter α:
where v is the speed of the IRI in the coordinate system, the beginning of which coincides with the location of the receiving antenna.
This approach to measuring the angle is based on the assumption that for small measuring bases ("small" compared to the distance to the positioned object) the hyperbolic position surface asymptotically tends to conical, the shape of which is in turn uniquely described by the vertex point and the angle at the base.
The main disadvantages of these methods is the possibility of direction finding IRI only in the far zone, i.e. under the condition
r >> d, (1)
where r is the distance to Iran,
d is the length of the measuring base.
The fulfillment of this condition allows us to make an assumption about the plane of the propagation front of the electromagnetic wave.
1. It is known that the accuracy of determining the IRI bearing depends on the ratio of the size of the measuring base to the distance to the IRI (the dependence is characterized by an expression that takes into account the lower Cramer-Rao boundary [6]). However, a significant increase in the size of the measuring base leads to an increase in the systematic error of direction finding due to the sphericity of the front of the electromagnetic wave. The magnitude of the direction finding error at range values r <10d can reach ten or more percent of the value of the angular coordinate of the IRI. The dependence of the direction finding error is presented in figure 1.
Of the known methods of direction finding, the closest to the proposed one is the method [6], based on measuring the phase differences of the IRI signal received by three antennas forming two pairs of orthogonal measuring bases (see figure 2), and calculating the value of the azimuth angle α on the IRI using expressions
where Δφ ij are the phase differences of the IRI signal received by i and j antennas,
d ij is the size of the measuring base formed by i and j antennas,
while the condition (λ is the wavelength of the IRI signal). This method is selected as a prototype.
The aim of the invention is to increase the accuracy of direction finding and expand the functionality of the direction finder (removing the restrictions described by expression (1)) by taking into account the sphericity of the propagation front of the electromagnetic wave.
This goal is achieved by the fact that in the method of direction finding IRI, based on the reception of its signal by three antennas, forming two pairs of equal orthogonal measuring bases (see figure 3), they measure the differences in the arrival times of the IRI signal to the antennas, calculate:
IRI azimuth angle γ using the expression
where Δt AC , Δt BC are the differences in the reception times of the IRI signal by the antennas forming pairs A, C and B, C, respectively,
the coordinates (x f , y f ) of the point F belonging to the IRI bearing line using expressions
where Δr AC = Δt AC • c, Δr BC = Δt BC • c are the distance differences from the IRI to the pairs of points A, C and B, C, respectively,
display the result.
- располагают три антенны в вершинах равнобедренного прямоугольного треугольника ΔAВС;
- измеряют разности времен приема сигнала ИРИ антеннами, образующими ортогональные базы;

- have three antennas at the vertices of an isosceles right triangle ΔABC;
- receive an IRI signal to all three antennas,
- measure the difference in the time of reception of the IRI signal by antennas forming orthogonal bases;
- calculate the values of the sum and difference of the differences in the times of reception of the IRI signal;
- calculate the ratio of the sum of the differences of the times of reception of the IRI signal to the difference of the differences of the times of reception of the IRI signal;

Figure 4 shows a variant of the device that implements the proposed method.
- антенной системы, содержащей три антенны 1, 2 и 3;
- системы измерения, содержащей блоки 4 и 5, предназначенные для измерения разностей времен приема сигнала ИРИ парами антенн (1, 2) и (2, 3);
The device consists of three functionally related elements:
- an antenna system containing three
- a measurement
- processing and display systems containing computing units 6-8 and unit 9, which implements a visualization of the results.
The principle of operation of the proposed device is as follows.
Обозначим разности расстояний от нее до точек А и В через ΔrAB, а разность расстояний до точек А и С через ΔrAC.For convenience and clarity of the further discussion, we assume that the IRI location point coincides with some point D having coordinates x, y, z. We denote the differences of the distances from it to points A and B by Δr AB , and the difference of the distances to points A and C by Δr AC .
хА=-a; yA=0; zA=0;
хВ=a; yB=0; zB=0;
хC=0; yC=a; zC=0,
где a = |AB|/2,
фиг.6).We introduce the coordinate system Oxuz defined in such a way that its origin coincides with the middle of the segment AB, the axis Ox is collinear to the vector , and the xOy plane coincided with the ABC plane (Fig. 5). Then the coordinates of points A, B, and C in the system Oxyz are respectively equal
x A = -a; y A = 0; z A = 0;
x B = a; y B = 0; z B = 0;
x C = 0; y C = a; z C = 0,
where a = | AB | / 2,
and therefore can be written
Squaring the right and left sides of equation (2), we obtain
and consequently,
If you open the brackets on the left side and simplify, then equation (3) takes the form of the canonical equation of a two-sheeted hyperboloid of revolution:
Where
Thus, from the above reasoning, it follows that the point D belongs to the surface described by equation (4) (see Fig.6).
х', у', z' - координаты точки D в системе координат О'х'у'z';
b = |AC|/2.However, it should be borne in mind that when squaring equation (2), the sign of the distance difference value Δr AB was lost, therefore, point D
can belong to only one branch of the hyperboloid in accordance with the system of conditions
Similarly, introducing the coordinate system O'x'y'z ', the beginning of which coincides with the middle of the segment AC, the axis O'x' is collinear to the half-line AC, and the plane x'O'y 'coincides with the plane ОхуzO', we can obtain that the point D belongs to the surface described by the equation
Where
x ', y', z '- coordinates of the point D in the coordinate system O'x'y'z';
b = | AC | / 2.
Since the point D belongs simultaneously to two surfaces, therefore, it belongs to the line of intersection of these surfaces.
x′ = (x-x0)cosα+(y-y0)sinα,
y′ = -(x-x0)sinα+(y-y0)cosα,
где х0, у0 - координаты точки О'х' системе координат Oxyz;
фиг.7).Since the xOy and x'O'y 'planes coincide, then equation (7) in the Oxyz coordinate system can be obtained by changing the variables in accordance with the known expressions [8]:
x ′ = (xx 0 ) cosα + (yy 0 ) sinα,
y ′ = - (xx 0 ) sinα + (yy 0 ) cosα,
where x 0 , y 0 - coordinates of the point O'x 'coordinate system Oxyz;
α is the angle between the coordinate axes Ox and O'x '(see Fig.7).
х2a3+у2b3+xyc3+xd3+уe3+f3=z2, (11)
где
d3=a;
e3=a;
As a result of this transformation, equation (7) takes the form
x 2 a 2 + y 2 b 2 + hus 2 + xd 2 + ye 2 + f 2 = z 2 , (9)
Where
If we consider the difference in the differences of distances from point D to pairs of points A, B and A, C, then it is obvious that
that is, the difference in the differences of the distances from the point D to the pairs of points A, B and A, C is equal to the difference in the distances from the point D to the pair of points C, B. It follows that the point D also belongs to the third surface described by the equation
x 2 a 3 + y 2 b 3 + xyc 3 + xd 3 + ye 3 + f 3 = z 2 , (11)
Where
d 3 = a;
e 3 = a;
Thus, the location of point D in the Oxyz coordinate system is determined by the system of equations
Where
The system of equations (12) associates unknown values of the coordinates of point D with the known coordinates of points A, B, C and the values of the distance differences Δr AB , Δr AC and Δr BC . However, due to the presence of a functional relationship between the equations included in the system, this system has an infinite number of solutions. The set of solutions will include the coordinate vectors of all the intersection points of the surfaces of the position of the point D described by the equations included in system (12).
We find the equation of the spatial line containing all points whose coordinates are the roots of the system of equations (12). To do this, we consider the section of the surfaces of the position of the point D by the plane described by the equation z = z s = const.
For an arbitrary value of z s, we can write
where f ' 1 = f 1 -z 2 s ; f ' 2 = f 2 -z 2 s ; f ' 3 = f 3 -z 2 s . (fifteen)
The equations in system (14) are hyperbole equations. Thus, to solve the system of equations (14) - this means finding the coordinates of the intersection points of the three hyperbolas described by the equations included in the system.
где d15=(a1(b2d3-b3d2)-b1(a2d3-a3d2))/G;
e15=(a1(b2e3-b3e2)-b1(a2e3-a3e2))/G;
f15=(a1(b2f3-b3f2)-b1(a2f3-a3f2)+f1(a2b3-a3b2))/G; d26=-a1(c2d3-c3d2)/G;
e26=-a1(c2e3-c3e2)/G;
f26=(-a1(c2f3-c3f2)-f1(a2c3-a3c2))/G;
d36=b1(c2d3-c3d2)/G;
e36=b1(c2e3-c3e2)/G;
f36=(b1(c2f3-c3f2)+f1(b2c3-b3c2))/G;
G=a1(b2c3-b3c2)-b1(a2c3-a3c2).In order to find solutions to system (14), we bring it to the form
where d 15 = (a 1 (b 2 d 3 -b 3 d 2 ) -b 1 (a 2 d 3 -a 3 d 2 )) / G;
e 15 = (a 1 (b 2 e 3 -b 3 e 2 ) -b 1 (a 2 e 3 -a 3 e 2 )) / G;
f 15 = (a 1 (b 2 f 3 -b 3 f 2 ) -b 1 (a 2 f 3 -a 3 f 2 ) + f 1 (a 2 b 3 -a 3 b 2 )) / G; d 26 = -a 1 (c 2 d 3 -c 3 d 2 ) / G;
e 26 = -a 1 (c 2 e 3 -c 3 e 2 ) / G;
f 26 = (- a 1 (c 2 f 3 -c 3 f 2 ) -f 1 (a 2 c 3 -a 3 c 2 )) / G;
d 36 = b 1 (c 2 d 3 -c 3 d 2 ) / G;
e 36 = b 1 (c 2 e 3 -c 3 e 2 ) / G;
f 36 = (b 1 (c 2 f 3 -c 3 f 2 ) + f 1 (b 2 c 3 -b 3 c 2 )) / G;
G = a 1 (b 2 c 3 -b 3 c 2 ) -b 1 (a 2 c 3 -a 3 c 2 ).
где А1=d26;
B1=d2 15+2d26e15-d15e26+f26;
C1=2d15f15+e2 15d26-f15e26-d15e15e26+2e15f26;
D1=f2 15-f15e15e26+2e2 15f26;
B2=e15+d36;
C2=d36e15-d15e36+f36;
D2=e15f36-e36f15,
фиг.8).From the first equation of system (16) it follows that
Therefore, the system of equations (16) can be represented as
where A 1 = d 26 ;
B 1 = d 2 15 + 2d 26 e 15 -d 15 e 26 + f 26 ;
C 1 = 2d 15 f 15 + e 2 15 d 26 -f 15 e 26 -d 15 e 15 e 26 + 2e 15 f 26 ;
D 1 = f 2 15 -f 15 e 15 e 26 + 2e 2 15 f 26 ;
B 2 = e 15 + d 36 ;
C 2 = d 36 e 15 -d 15 e 36 + f 36 ;
D 2 = e 15 f 36 -e 36 f 15 ,
or equivalent
The solutions of the quadratic equation of system (18) are two values of the variable x, defined by well-known expressions:
where a, b, c are the coefficients of the quadratic equation for this particular case, equal to:
If we introduce the notation
and
then the partial difference of the variables y 1 and y 2 and the difference of the roots of the quadratic equation x 1 and x 2 is determined by the expression
and the sums of the variables y 1 , y 2 and the roots of the quadratic equation x 1 , x 2 are determined by the expressions
The obtained result can be interpreted as follows: since the value of relation (19) does not depend on the value of the variable z, therefore, taking into account (20), all points whose coordinates are solutions of the system
equations (12) lie in one plane perpendicular to the xOy plane intersecting the axis Ox at an angle
and passing through a point with coordinates
Since Δr BC = Δr AC -Δr AB , then equation (21) can be represented as
The obtained result means that the ratio of the sum and difference of the difference of distances from two pairs of reference points to the desired location of the IRI determines the direction (angle γ) to the radio source located at an arbitrary height h above the ABC plane (see Fig. 8).
If to measure the differences of the distances Δr AC and Δr BC, use the time difference meters of the IRI signal arriving at points A, B and C, then equation (22) can be rewritten in the form
where Δt AC , Δt BC are the differences in the reception times of the IRI signal at points A and C and B and C, respectively,
C is the propagation speed of the radio signal.

The outputs of the
u1(t) = U(t)cos(ω0t+φ0),
u2(t) = U(t+Δt21)cos[ω0(t+Δt21)+φ0],
u3(t) = U(t+Δt31)cos[ω0(t+Δt31)+φ0],
The IRI signal received by
u 1 (t) = U (t) cos (ω 0 t + φ 0 ),
u 2 (t) = U (t + Δt 21 ) cos [ω 0 (t + Δt 21 ) + φ 0 ],
u 3 (t) = U (t + Δt 31 ) cos [ω 0 (t + Δt 31 ) + φ 0 ],
respectively.
Δtij = ti-tj,
The signals from the outputs of
Δt ij = t i -t j ,
where t k is the arrival time of the IRI signal at the k-th antenna,
Δt nm is the difference in the arrival times of the IRI signal at the nth and mth antennas.
The
tΣ = Δt13+Δt23,
tΔ = Δt13-Δt23.
γ=arcаn(w),
где в качестве аргумента используется результат предыдущей вычислительной операции;
From the outputs of the
t Σ = Δt 13 + Δt 23 ,
t Δ = Δt 13 -Δt 23 .
The calculated values of t Δ and t Σ from the outputs of
- the ratio value is calculated
- calculate the value of the elevation angle γ of the IRI using the expression
γ = arcan (w),
where the result of the previous computational operation is used as an argument;
- calculate the values of x f , y f coordinates of the point belonging to the line of position of the IRI.
The calculated values of γ, x f , y f from the output of the analysis unit go to the display unit, which is designed to visualize the results of the proposed direction finding method.
9. A variant of the display of the results of direction finding is presented in figure 9.
Thus, the proposed method of direction finding and a device for its implementation, in comparison with the prototype, provide the ability to determine the azimuth of the IRI for any size of the measuring bases of the direction finder and the relative positions of the IRI and direction finding antennas.
In addition, the proposed method of direction finding IRI is invariant to the instability of the carrier frequency and the type of modulation of received signals. Thus, the functionality of the direction finder is expanded.
