Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the field of biotechnology, and in particular to methods for assessing the suitability of feed media for vermiculture and optimizing their composition.
A known method for determining the toxicity and suitability of new substrates for feed worms in laboratory or semi-industrial conditions [1]. The experiments are carried out in cages, where the test substrates and worms are placed. The test is survival, the reproduction rate of animals, the increase in the number of worms and cocoons. In all recommendations for vermicultivation of earthworms, special attention is paid to caution when introducing new additives into animal feed in order to exclude the death of worms and not reduce their physiological activity, however, it is not always possible to avoid the toxic effect of substrates. As test organisms, Eisenia foetida or California red worm is used. The disadvantage of this method is the slow propagation of earthworms, the need for a large volume of substrate for growing and testing, the frequent death of animals, the long term of their maturation. All this leads to a rise in price of the process.
To eliminate these drawbacks, it is proposed to use a potted worm (Enchytraeus albidus) as a test object during biotesting.
They are based on its physiological features, such as its small size (body length 20-35 mm, thickness 2-3 mm), which makes it possible to breed and use it during biotesting in small volumes of substrate, high reproduction rate and density, up to 100-150 thousand per 1 m 2 , which is also very important when conducting a large number of experiments, the ability to tolerate temperatures below 0 o C, which allows experiments in the field.
From the above example, it can be seen that, in comparison with Eisenia foetida and the California red worm, the potato worm is more sensitive to most toxic compounds.
