Abstract
Description
The invention relates to storage media, and more particularly to optical media with a high recording density of information.
Optical memory disks (ODP) are widely used at present for reproducing audio, digital and video information [1], as well as for recording, storing and reading data in computers.
With respect to audio information, the benefits achieved are crucial, and the almost complete transition to optical storage and playback of audio information is a matter of time. The advantages of optical discs are also evident when storing relatively capacious computer programs. At the same time, problems remain in the use of optical discs in computers in online rewriting mode ("Winchester") and in video players. The complexity, high cost and some technical inconveniences of optical systems limit their use to relatively rare types of personal computers, and video discs are inferior to magnetic video tapes either in terms of video information or in cost.
Currently, intensive work is underway aimed at implementing a higher density of information in the ODP. In the last 5-6 years, significant progress has been made towards increasing the amount of information recorded on an optical disc by using its volume and creating multilayer systems. The most famous such system is DVD ("digital video disc") [2]. However, an increase in the number of layers inevitably leads to a deterioration in the quality of the recorded signal. Therefore, the DVD manages to use, mainly, only two layers lying one on top of the other and separated by a translucent layer of light-reflecting metal. The layers separately use the principles of standard technology and the design of elementary media CD ROM (Fig. 1 a) It is possible to use the second side of the disk, which results in a four-fold gain in relation to CD ROM (ceteris paribus).
More radically, the problem of multilayer recording is solved by the FMD / C system ("fluorescent multilayer discs / cards") [3]. It uses the fluorescent properties of the dye, introduced in layers into the transparent base of the disk or card. An incoherent signal of the secondary radiation excited by the laser is recorded. Given a certain shift of the radiation wavelength from layer to layer, however, sufficient for reliable separation of the corresponding wavelengths by a filter system in front of the detector, information from each layer is read independently, and additional layers create minimal interference to the useful signal. This provides the conditions for a significant increase in the number of layers, with 10 layers already practicable, and 100 authors consider theoretically possible.
dmin = 1,22λ/NA,
[1]).However, a significant increase in the recording density in one layer is usually associated with a decrease in the laser radiation wavelength. Indeed, with the existing method of encoding information, an increase in the recording density in one layer is fundamentally limited by the minimum achievable size of the light spot at the focus of the lens. So, even when using an ideal optical system, the size of the light spot d min is limited by diffraction. The size d min is related to the wavelength of light λ and the numerical aperture of the lens NA by the Rayleigh criterion, as
d min = 1.22λ / NA,
whence, with the minimum area occupied on the disk by a single information carrier (pet), S 1 ≈ d min 2 , the maximum density N = 10 8 cm -2 follows (for the wavelength λ 1 ≈800 nm, characteristic of the most highly efficient semiconductor lasers, and the maximum aperture NA≈0.5-0.6, achieved in mass high-aperture micro lenses [1]).
An increase in recording density with the traditional method of encoding information is possible with decreasing wavelength, and the gain corresponds to the square of the ratio λ 1 / λ 2 , where λ 2 is the wavelength relative to the short-wave laser. Thus, the creation of a “blue” laser with λ 2 = 400 nm will provide a 4 times gain, but its industrial application is associated with the need to solve difficult problems associated with the durability of such devices. The fundamental point is the inevitability of the release of more Joule heat during the operation of the pn junction, which has a wider zone, as a heteroemitter, and the heat generated increases with decreasing laser wavelength. The efforts of leading firms and research laboratories in the world are currently aimed at solving these problems. For these purposes, mainly ZnSe and GaN semiconductor compounds and low-dimensional heterosystems based on them are studied. However, an acceptable result for widespread industrial use has not yet been achieved.
[2]. A certain reduction in the wavelength of a semiconductor laser, up to 630-650 nm, used in DVD (Fig.1b) and not associated with problems of this order, as well as a number of other measures, including increasing the numerical aperture of the lens, predetermined the total DVD gain to seven times within one layer compared to traditional CD ROMs, including more than four times the gain due to the sizes of elementary information carriers 1 (pits) and
For a number of reasons, the most acceptable for CD ROM replication and optical disc information systems designed for audio and video systems has so far been such a design (Fig. 1a) in which the reflection signal from a thin aluminum film 4 deposited on surface of a transparent disk made of plastic (polycarbonate). The disk contains recesses (pits) of 5 elliptical shapes: with a depth of d = 0.11-0.15 microns, a length in the direction of the track l ≈ 0.8 microns and across it b = 0.5-0.6 microns [1,2] (figa). If the light spot falls on the area where the pit is located, the part of the light reflected from it acquires a phase shift, which leads to the scattering of the light returning to the lens and a decrease in the signal of the receiver. This signal change contains the necessary information from which audio, video or digital information can be restored. Moreover, the sound is recorded on a disc in digital form, while video information is often recorded in analogue, because the video image requires a very wide frequency band, and its recording in digital form with the existing encoding method took up too much space in the CD-ROM.
[2]. This is, in general terms, the CD ROM format adopted by leading companies, well developed and provided with serial technological equipment. In addition, this scheme is provided with well-developed optical systems, track tracking systems, automatic regulation, error suppression, etc., as well as systems for recording initial information and replication [1]. DVD needs the most up-to-date modification of all these systems, in addition equipped with a shorter-wave laser than a CD ROM. The corresponding driver can also read information from CD ROMs, while CD ROMs cannot be read by DVD drivers. FMD / C drivers are additionally complicated with respect to DVD drivers by filter systems and selection of the read layer [2].
CD ROM. Thus, such new systems would be preferable that not only create new information opportunities, but also fit as much as possible into an already developed and widely used system, such as described in general terms above for CD ROMs.
The present invention is the creation of an optical recording medium, which allows to increase the information capacity of each element (pit) of the optical disk due to more complete use of such properties of optical radiation as polarization. The technical result achieved is to increase the information capacity of each element (pit) of size S 1 = d min 2 as many times as many technically distinguishable polarization states it can carry.
K = π/2Θmin,
Если считать различимым Θmin = 0,3°, как это уже реализовано в магнитооптических дисках памяти, коэффициент К составит К= 90/0,3 = 300.Coefficient K, characterizing the increase in the information capacity of one pit during registration of various polarization states, can be found as
K = π / 2Θ min ,
where Θ min is the minimum distinguishable angle θ between the direction of the stroke q and the vector of the electric field of the light wave E. If we assume that Θ min = 0.3 ° is distinguishable, as has already been realized in magneto-optical memory disks, the coefficient K will be K = 90 / 0.3 = 300.
With traditional recording and playback methods, an area equivalent to two pits falls on a bit of information. At the same time, the standard value of the minimum distinguishable angle of rotation of the polarization vector, achieved in the technique of a scientific experiment, is θ min = 0.0001 ° (K = 900000), which can be considered as a reserve of possibilities of the "polarization" method.
The above technical result is achieved in that in an optical recording medium containing sequences of pits made in the material of said medium and located along the recording track on the medium, in accordance with the invention, each pit contains N dashed optical inhomogeneities, where N ≥ 1, with N > 1 dashed inhomogeneities within each pit are parallel and periodic and form an angle θ relative to the electric field vector of the electromagnetic wave of the readout radiation, and in mask angle θ, which is the basic source of information may vary for individual pits.
Optical dashed inhomogeneities within each pit can be protrusions or grooves in an optically transparent carrier material coated with a continuous metal film, and the height of the protrusions and, accordingly, the depth of the grooves is δ≤λ / 4, where λ is the wavelength of the read radiation in said carrier material.
In addition, dashed optical inhomogeneities within each pit can be alternating strips of materials differing in complex dielectric constant, for example, dashed optical inhomogeneities can be alternating strips of light-absorbing and translucent materials at a read wavelength. Alternating bands of materials can also have significant photoluminescence when excited by a read-out laser. In this case, incoherent secondary radiation will be recorded, not the reflected signal. Moreover, the value of the recorded signal will be proportional to the angle Θ due to the proportionality to this angle of the amount of absorbed energy of the reading light beam.
In addition, in order to increase the recording density of information in the carrier material between the recording tracks and pits, additional dashed optical inhomogeneities can be made with the same cross-sectional dimensions in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the aforementioned inhomogeneities as for dashed optical inhomogeneities made within the pits, additional dashed optical inhomogeneities are strictly parallel or perpendicular to the recording tracks. The same effect can be achieved if additional calibration pits containing correspondingly directed dashed optical inhomogeneities are performed in the carrier material for recording the signals of maximum and / or minimum reflection on the recording tracks with a predetermined frequency. The choice between these two methods of calibrating the information signal will be dictated by technical and economic considerations.
The above technical result of increasing the recording density of information is also achieved in a method of reading information from an optical recording medium containing sequences of pits made in the material of the mentioned medium and located along the recording track on the medium, each pit contains N dashed optical inhomogeneities, where N ≥ 1, and at N> 1 dashed inhomogeneities within each pit are parallel and periodic and form an angle θ relative to the electric field vector wave of the read radiation, and the angle θ, which is the elementary source of information, differs for individual pits if the read information includes the steps of controlled rotation of the plane of polarization of the read radiation and fixation of the plane of polarization of the read radiation when the maximum value of the reflected signal is reached.

FMD/C.Studies performed by the author confirm the potential possibility of creating optical memory disks (Fig. 1c) based on the method of “coding” information using the polarization properties of reflection from a particular optical dashed
In all cases, the information is “encoded” as the angle Θ between the direction q of the
According to the invention, the method of "coding" information implemented in the claimed optical recording medium provides the ability to work with such optical dashed inhomogeneities in which the ratio of the period of the dashes to the wavelength of the read radiation is small, T / λ≪1. This allows, using the traditional for CD ROM wavelength range λ≈800 nm and the corresponding pit diameter d min ≈0.8-1 μm, to place in it a fairly long periodic dashed structure (figure 2). The use of a shorter wavelength source that reads radiation information will lead to a corresponding change in the scale of the elements of the recording medium.
The proposed optical recording medium, when implemented in optical memory disks, can have various technical embodiments. Let us describe as an example some options that allow, however, various modifications in the process of their implementation.
The general technical solution and the design of the optical disk are quite similar to the traditional ones: it represents, for example, gluing two disks of optically transparent plastic, for example polycarbonate, while the inner surface is a regular spiral sequence of pits with a diameter D, corrugated with bar-shaped bulges (indentations) with a depth of δ, pitch T and thickness h of a metal film 9 (for example, aluminum), as shown in FIG. Thus, the bulges and depressions are grouped into pits - single information carriers. As shown in figure 2, within each
The implementation of rewritable recording media made in accordance with the invention will require the abandonment of dashed protrusions and grooves as a technique that needs special and irreversible technological procedures. Such rewritable optical recording media can be implemented in the form of flat dashed structures with a contrast of the dielectric constant (high-frequency conductivity, refractive index) if the energy of the read radiation source is sufficient for the phase transition "metal-semiconductor (dielectric)" in the material of the working layer in recording mode .
Comparing the proposed method of encoding information with known effective methods of increasing the density of information in optical memory disks, which is reduced to increasing the number of layers superimposed on each other (for example, DVD or FMD disks with fluorescent layers), the following advantages provided by the invention can be noted:
a) the production of single-layer optical recording media is cheaper than the production of multilayer media,
b) in single-layer optical media, problems that impede rewriting in multi-layer media can be substantially eliminated,
c) the polarization method of encoding information underlying the invention can also be used to significantly expand the possibilities of information volumes in the aforementioned known methods (DVD, FMD / C), because It is quite additive and compatible.
650 MB • (3•102-9•105) ≈ 200 GB-500TB.Moreover, the polarization method allows theoretically realizing in one layer volumes of information that are superior to multilayer systems in both DVD and FMD / C formats. The corresponding amount of information on an optical disc of the CD-ROM format (650 MB) using the claimed invention can be estimated as 650 MB • (3 • 10 2 -9 • 10 5 ) ≈ 200 GB-500TB.
The author conducted an experimental verification of the claimed invention. Different directions q of the optical dashed inhomogeneity were recorded with respect to the incident polarization vector E of the reflected beam intensity. GaAs crystals were used as a substrate, onto which a photoresist was deposited, and then the interference beam was exposed to an ultraviolet line of an argon or cadmium-neon laser. After the manifestation of the photoresist, the GaAs surface was etched (ion etching) to a given depth δ.
Next, a metal film of a given thickness h was deposited by magnetron sputtering over a relief structure in a semiconductor. A typical cross section of the studied samples is a figure close to the meander. We studied samples with different etching depths δ, pitch T, different thicknesses of the metal film h, and various metals: gold (Au), silver (Ag), copper (Cu), and aluminum (A1). We studied mainly the reflection under normal incidence of the light beam in the spectral range of 0.4-1.4 microns. To measure the dependence of the reflected signal intensity R on Θ, we used the rotation of the sample relative to the optical axis, the normality of which was strictly verified to the sample using an alignment laser.
Reflection signals measured with orientations accordingly, the spectral dependence was calculated Typical dependencies obtained are a curve with one or more maxima. The amplitude and location of the maxima vary from sample to sample in the entire studied range, moreover, the maximum relative amplitude reaches such significant values as ρ> 10 2 (Fig. 5). It was easy to verify that a change in the angle Θ from 0 to π / 2 smoothly changes the magnitude of the reflected signal from maximum to minimum, and this makes it possible to register different directions of the stroke Θ up to the minimum distinguishable value Θ min .
As the study of the reflection coefficient from narrow (less than λ / 2 width) gold bands deposited on various smooth (not embossed) substrates shows, if there is a significant contrast of the absorption coefficient (refraction) of the bar-gap system, a similar result can also be obtained also from almost flat, but not uniform in composition of the stroke structure.
FIG. 6 a, b illustrates a traditional optical registration scheme corresponding to two main types of optical heads: reflection-sensitive (Fig. 6a) and polarization-sensitive for magneto-optical disks (Fig. 6b).
The reflection-sensitive optical head shown in FIG. 6 a comprises an
The polarization-sensitive optical head shown in Fig.6b, contains an
(Note that the presence of a

Option 1. In the case of a polarized radiation source (laser) 17 for the inventive optical recording medium, reduced to a system of differently rotated reflective linear light polarizers, the detected signal will be analog, and the photoresponse of each pit in the circuit shown in Fig. 7a will contain, according to Malus law signals of various intensities - as many gradations of intensity as how many angles of rotation of the plane of polarization that are minimally resolved by the system are placed between angles of 0 and 90 degrees. This is the simplest scheme for recording information contained in the angle угла by the intensity of the reflected signal.
Option 4. It differs from
As a standard for the maximum (minimum) signal, it is possible to use the filling of the inter-track (3, Fig. 1c) and inter-pipe (10, Fig. 4) spaces or individual pits with strokes directed along (across) the polarization vector of the light wave. The use of built-in reference elements leads to a significant increase in the amount of reliably readable information from each pit.
26). The initial signal that reads the information in
