Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for producing a pre-processed metal melt for casting metal.
1. Swedish Patent No. 9304347-9 describes a method for continuous or semi-continuous casting of compacted graphite iron (CGI) in which a structure modifier is added to the molten iron before being fed into a closed furnace for conditioning treatment with inlet and outlet channels, for example, a hermetic transfer furnace. During operation, the amount of molten iron is maintained within specified limits by periodically replacing the amount of molten iron from the reactor that is discharged from the conditioning furnace. Magnesium is added to the cast iron melt in the reactor and optionally in the conditioning furnace as a structure modifier. A preferred embodiment of this known method is depicted in FIG. 1.
The excess pressure in the furnace space 16 can be adjusted to control the flow of the melt through the outlet 13 made in the groove 9. In case of prolonged stops, the excess pressure is relieved so that the melt 5 in the groove 9 is drawn back into the furnace 16 and the melt level in the inlet and the outlet channels remained the same as the melt level in the furnace chamber 16, as shown by the dashed line in FIG. 1. At the same time, the rate of loss of magnesium decreases. Loss of magnesium from the melt in the furnace chamber can be calculated and compensated by loading the magnesium rod 6 through the valve for loading magnesium 19 before restarting the furnace.
However, the melt in the outlet channel will lose magnesium relatively quickly due to evaporation and oxidation, since the outlet channel is open to the atmosphere. In addition, magnesium cannot be recharged into the melt in the outlet channel. As a result, the first castings obtained after stopping must be rejected, since they do not have the required structure.
From SE-328673, a method is known for protecting the melt in the outlet and inlet by inert gas purging. However, this method only to some extent reduces the loss of magnesium and does not provide the ability to obtain good first CGI castings.
An object of the present invention is to solve a problem regarding the loss (reduction) of structure modifiers and / or the formation of crystallization centers in the outlet channel of a conditioning furnace, as well as increasing the yield of castings with a modified metal melt structure.
Characterization of the invention is given in paragraph 1 of the claims, and in paragraphs 2-8 are characteristics of preferred variants of the invention.
In accordance with the present invention, the problem is solved in that in a method for producing castings from a melt, including pouring a pre-treated molten metal into a furnace for conditioning processing having an inlet and outlet channels, casting the metal from the furnace through the outlet channel, after downtime in the production of castings the molten metal from the outlet channel is displaced into the furnace by lowering the level of the molten metal in the outlet channel to a level below the metal level in the furnace, the structure modifier (s) are added to the furnace / Or nucleating to recover the desired modifier content (s) in the melt and casting the melt resumed.
To practice the present invention, various types of conditioning furnaces can be used in practice. In the case where the melt is protected by a slag layer or an atmosphere of a shielding inert gas, the furnace may be open type. In accordance with one of the preferred variants of the present invention, a closed furnace for conditioning treatment is used, which is preferably also equipped with a combined means for creating high pressure and vacuum. The conditioning furnace is also preferably equipped with an induction heater and means for changing or determining the level of the melt in the outlet channel.
The method of the present invention is described below in more detail with reference to the attached drawings.
FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of a known method and furnace unit suitable for implementing the present invention.
FIG. 2a, b is a depiction of a conditioning furnace, which shows the levels of metal melt during downtime in accordance with the present invention in comparison with the levels of molten metal during downtime in a known solution.
In the case of a variant of the known method shown in FIG. 1, first, the molten iron 1 is prepared in the furnace 2. In this case, the melt is obtained from iron scrap. The carbon equivalent of the melt is controlled in furnace 2 by adding carbon and steel to the melt, as shown in position 25. The melt is then transferred to a ladle 3, in which the melt is subjected to basic processing, which consists in adding magnesium 11 in pure form, including adding magnesium 11 to any fit form.
After this main treatment, slag is removed from the melt, and the melt is transported to the conditioning treatment furnace 4 and loaded into the furnace, while the atmosphere is maintained under pressure from an inert gas; furnaces of this type, called PRESS-POUR type, are sold by ABB (for example, product number LFR 5 CTO, LFR 10 CTO or LFR 20 CTO). The melt is discharged from the furnace in a controlled manner either by controlling the overpressure in the furnace space 16 by means of a flat valve 17 on the supply gas pipe 18, or by means of a locking rod 12 inserted into the outlet 13 in the chute 9, or by a combination of these control methods.
Then, the melt 5 is heated by means of an induction heating element 22, by which the melt is also mixed to some extent. A portion of cast iron is loaded into the conditioning furnace 4 and mixed with the melt 5 already present in it. In the case of a continuous process, about 75% of the maximum furnace capacity is used. Then, if necessary, magnesium is supplied to the furnace 4.
Magnesium is either in the form of a magnesium rod in a steel shell or in the form of a rod 6 is loaded into the furnace 4 through a locking hole 7 made in the casing 8 of the furnace. As with other additives, the magnesium supplement is controlled by thermal analysis of cast iron with compacted graphite.
The hole 7 is provided with a flat valve 19. The device also includes a chimney 20 through which MgO and Mg vapors are drawn and which also has a valve 21 installed in the casing 8. During operation, the valve 17 is open for continuous gas supply, while valves 19 and 21 locked up.
When it is necessary to introduce Mg rod 6 into the furnace, the pressure in the furnace is first reduced by closing the valve 17 (thereby stopping the gas supply). After that, the melt level in the trough 9 drops to the level shown by the dashed line. This operation takes about 10 s. Then open the valve 21 in the exhaust pipe 20 and the valve for supplying magnesium 19, which takes another 5 seconds. The magnesium bar is loaded into the furnace for 30 s. Then the valves 19 and 21 are locked, which takes another 5 seconds. Finally, the valve 17 opens and the pressure rises to its normal operating level, which takes about another 20 s. In total, the time required for loading the magnesium rod 6 into the furnace for conditioning treatment is therefore about 70 s.
12. Inoculator 10 is fed into the chute 9 of the furnace in accordance with the above-mentioned control principles immediately after the release of metal. The release of metal from the furnace 4 is controlled by the locking rod 12.
The process chain of the method ends with taking a sample 14 for thermal analysis by means of a sampler 23, not described in detail in the present description. In the illustrated case, the sample is taken in the gate or in the riser of the gate system 15 of the casting mold 14. In order for the analysis results to characterize the actual contents of the reagents in the kiln, 4-5 casting molds are passed before each sampling replenishment of the kiln. The sample is analyzed by computer 24, not described in detail in the present description; arrows from dotted lines indicate information paths to and from computer 24.
9304347-9. The addition of structure modifiers to the system is controlled by any suitable method in accordance with the principles described in Swedish patent 9304347-9.
In FIG. Figure 2 shows the levels of molten metal during longer downtimes or stops during the casting process, where h 0 characterizes the level of metal in the furnace for conditioning processing and h 1 characterizes the level of metal in the exhaust channel. In the known method (Fig. 2A), h 1 = h 0 is achieved by relieving excess pressure from the furnace chamber, and before the operation is resumed, the melt in the outlet channel cannot be reactivated. As can be seen from FIG. 2b, according to the invention, h 1 is less than h 0 , that is, the melt located in the trough and in the outlet channel is pushed back into the furnace for conditioning treatment. Therefore, it can be reactivated by reloading the required amount of a structure modifier and / or the formation of crystallization centers, for example, magnesium, before resuming casting operations.
In the case where the furnace is a closed furnace having combined means for creating vacuum and overpressure, as shown schematically in FIG. 2b, a vacuum can be created in the furnace chamber to suck the melt from the outlet channel into the furnace. By arranging the inner opening of the outlet channel above the inner opening of the inlet channel, the latter will also act as a liquid shutter at the lower metal level (h 1 ) in the outlet channel. The melt sucked back into the furnace from the outlet can also be used to transfer incoming heat to the volume of the metal.
The method is particularly convenient for producing magnesium-treated cast iron, in particular compacted graphite cast iron (CGI) having a lower structure modifier content than malleable cast iron. If too long downtimes are planned, to reactivate the melt, it is sufficient to implement the method at the end of the shutdown, just before starting work.
To control the height of the level of molten metal in the exhaust channel, you can use most commonly used methods for determining the level of metal. In addition, the vacuum pressure can be used not only to control the level of the metal, but also to determine the lowest permissible melt level in the outlet channel, for example, when h 1 is equal to the height of the outlet level in the furnace, and air will be sucked into the furnace.
