Abstract
Description
The invention relates to radio engineering, and more specifically to CDMA cellular communication systems, in particular to methods and algorithms for random access of mobile station (MS) subscribers to a communication channel.
In a cellular communication system, the subscriber service area is divided into sub-areas - cells. Inside each cell there is a base station (BS) serving subscribers located inside the cell. In CDMA communication systems, various communication channels are distinguished by a long code signal extending the spectrum of the original high-frequency signal. To ensure the high capacity of the communication system, a long code must have good correlation properties, i.e. provide a low level of correlation with a non-zero time shift between two identical signals, as well as a low level of correlation between different signals. The number of such signals, and therefore the number of channels is limited.
In order to gain access to one of the communication channels of a given cell, the mobile user performs a random access procedure, the purpose of which is to inform the BS of the service request and obtain from it the necessary information for further service. To perform a random access procedure in a communication system, in addition to information channels, there is a set of special reverse ACCESS channels, each of which corresponds to a certain long code.
Prior to the ACCESS procedure, the mobile subscriber enters the synchronization mode with the single time system. For this purpose, the pilot channel and synchronization channel signals transmitted from the BS serve. After that, the MS receives information on ACCESS channels provided by the system through one of the control channels. Before performing the ACCESS procedure, the mobile subscriber randomly selects the access channel and starts the random access procedure. The ACCESS procedure consists in serial transmission of signals called ACCESS probes.
ACCESS samples are transmitted until a response message is received from the BS, which it transmits after the detection and demodulation of one of the samples.
One of the problems of random access is the problem of "collision" of signals from various subscribers. This phenomenon is associated with the likelihood of multiple subscribers simultaneously falling into the same ACCESS channel. When the signals from such subscribers overlap in time, the BS demodulator cannot always separate these signals. At the same time, the probability of access failure for each of the subscribers significantly increases.
One possible way to solve this problem is to increase the number of ACCESS channels, which reduces the likelihood of a “collision” phenomenon. Such a solution cannot be applied with a high degree of load, that is, with a large number of subscribers in a cell, since the number of ACCESS channels is limited.
патент ЕР 0639899 "Random access communication method by use of CDMA, and system for mobile stations which use the method" [1] и действующий стандарт TIA/EIA IS-95 - Mobile Station-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-Mode - Wideband Spread-Spectrum Cellular Systems. Telecommunication Industry Association, July 1993, [2]). Another well-known way to solve the problem is the introduction of intentional random delay when transmitting ACCESS signals from the MS to the BS (see patent EP 0639899 "Random access communication method by use of CDMA, and system for mobile stations which use the method" [1] and the current TIA / EIA IS-95 standard is Mobile Station-Base Station Compatibility Standard for Dual-Mode - Wideband Spread-Spectrum Cellular Systems. Telecommunication Industry Association, July 1993, [2]). Introducing intentional random delay reduces the likelihood of a “collision” of signals. However, this leads to an increase in the search time of the sample on the BS and a decrease in the probability of its correct detection, since the region of uncertainty of the search for the sample increases. This increase is especially significant when moving to a higher chip speed in the new CDMA communication systems, since with an increase in chip speed the separation of signals in time by the same time interval leads to a more significant increase in the region of uncertainty expressed in chips.
US patent # 5673259, R.F. Quick, Random Access Communications Channel for Data Services, Qualcomm Inc. [3] ). One way to reduce the likelihood of multiple users simultaneously falling into the same ACCESS channel is proposed by the American telecommunication company Qualcomm (see US patent # 5673259, R.F. Quick, Random Access Communications Channel for Data Services, Qualcomm Inc. [3]). To this end, it is proposed to evaluate the level of “bandwidth requirements”, which depends on the number of subscribers in need of ACCESS and the speed of information transfer for each subscriber. If the level of “bandwidth needs” rises above the first threshold, then a dedicated information channel is provided to some users to perform random access. If the “bandwidth requirement” level falls below the second threshold, then access by all users again is only through the random access channel. Of course, this solution will reduce the likelihood of a "collision" of signals and a general increase in access efficiency. However, when some users switch to a dedicated service channel, the quality of communication for the main users of the dedicated dedicated service channel deteriorates.
Another problem of random access is to increase the level of interference in the system due to the high activity of subscribers of ACCESS channels. The main way to solve this problem is to increase the efficiency of the ACCESS procedure, which consists in increasing the probability of successful access with the lowest possible signal strength of the access.
US patent #5295152, В. Gundmundson, В. Parssons, "TDMA for mobile access in a CDMA system". Ericsson's patent (see US patent # 5295152, B. Gundmundson, B. Parssons, "TDMA for mobile access in a CDMA system". Ericsson Inc.) [4], proposes a method for temporarily separating ACCESS channel signals and other return channels. At the same time, to perform arbitrary ACCESS, special time intervals are allocated that repeat after a certain time. Transmission of user data and control data on other reverse channels is performed outside these time intervals. Moreover, the level of interference that is created by the ACCESS channel for other channels is practically reduced to zero, regardless of the degree of activity of ACCESS channel subscribers.
The disadvantage of this solution is that limiting the access time leads to an increase in the likelihood of a “collision” of signals, that is, multiple users simultaneously falling into the same ACCESS channel.
WO 9818280, "Random access in a mobile telecommunications system", Ericsson Telefon AB L M)[5], A published international application, also owned by Ericsson (see WO 9818280, "Random access in a mobile telecommunications system", Ericsson Telefon AB LM) [5], describes a method that improves the effectiveness of ACCESS by using individual preambles for each MS. Each MS upon access transmits a preamble with an individual “pattern” unique to it. Moreover, the used types of preambles have high correlation properties. This solution allows the BS to separate the ACCESS message signals from different subscribers, even when these signals arrive on the same ACCESS channel at the same time. The sample consists of a preamble, a short capsule, which contains only the information necessary for identification and the rest of the capsule, which is transmitted only if an appropriate message is received from the BS. If the first part of the sample is detected correctly, then the BS sends this MS a message on which channel to transmit the second part of the capsule containing the basic information necessary for ACCESS.
This proposal provides effective ACCESS, but has the following disadvantages.
The radiation of the preamble and the first part of the capsule consumes a lot of energy and creates interference for other users. Moreover, if the search for the first part of the sample is not successful, it turns out that the interference is created, but the result is not achieved. The second part of the capsule can be taken only from those users for whom there are enough free ACCESS channels. The rest of the users are sent a busy message that instructs the MS when to transfer. A new sample from these MSs again includes the preamble and both parts of the capsule, which leads to additional energy consumption and creates interference.
Closest to the proposed access method is the method described in the proposed Qualcomm Inc. standard IS-95 cellular communication system CDMA [2]. It lies in the fact that on the MS, accessing the communication system, perform the following sequence of operations.
1. Randomly select the access channel.
2. An access attempt is made, for this a sequence of ACCESS samples is transmitted, each of which represents a signal consisting of a preamble and a message capsule, with the beginning of the capsule transmission coinciding with the end of the preamble transmission.
3. Upon completion of the transmission of each of the ACCESS sample sequences, a response message is awaited during the waiting time interval.
4. If during the waiting interval the MS does not receive a response message, then the next ACCESS sample is transmitted, and the sample power is increased by a certain amount.
5. If, within a certain interval, a response message is received, they switch to the communication mode on the designated channel, and thereby complete the ACCESS procedure.
6. Count the number of ACCESS samples transmitted to the MS during the procedure, if it exceeds some specified number, then the ACCESS procedure is also completed.
During the access procedure on the BS, the following sequence of operations is performed.
7. Search for signals of the preamble of the access channel.
8. When a preamble signal is detected, the ACCESS channel messages are demodulated,
9. At the end of the demodulation, the messages verify the validity of the demodulation based on a specific test. If the test confirms the correct acceptance of the message, then the ACCESS confirmation message for the MS is generated and transmitted.
The described procedure involves the transmission of a message immediately after the transmission of the preamble, regardless of whether the preamble is detected or not. The corresponding ACCESS sample structure is shown in FIG. 2. With such a sample structure, if the preamble search failed (with an error in estimating the signal delay), then demodulation will be performed incorrectly. Consequently, the transmission power of the message capsule is wasted in vain, while creating interference for other users.
Even if the preamble is detected correctly, the capsule demodulation may be unsuccessful due to the overlap of the multipath signal profiles from different users who accidentally left on the same access channel. This will necessitate the transfer of the next ACCESS sample and, therefore, an additional increase in the level of interference.
The problem that the proposed method solves is to increase the likelihood of successful access while reducing the power of the sample, as well as reducing the likelihood of "collision" of signals from subscribers who accidentally fall into the same ACCESS channel.
The application of this solution in a CDMA cellular communication system will significantly reduce the interference power generated by users accessing the communication system and reduce access time. This will increase the capacity of the system and reduce the time-based subscription fee for services provided to users.
To solve this problem, in the method of random access of MS subscribers, namely, on the MS that accesses the communication system, the ACCESS channel is selected, an ACCESS attempt is made by transmitting a sequence of ACCESS samples, each ACCESS sample contains a preamble, the capsules are waiting for the capsule to finish ACCESS confirmation messages within a certain time interval, if they do not receive ACCESS confirmation messages, then the number of ACCESS samples transmitted by the MS during the procedure is counted, if it is exceeded t is a predetermined number, then the ACCESS procedure is completed, otherwise the transmission of the next sample starts, and the sample power is increased by a certain amount, if a response message is received within a certain time interval, then they switch to communication mode on the assigned channel, and thereby complete the procedure ACCESS, during the access procedure on the BS, the access channel preamble signals are searched, upon detection of the preamble signal, ACCESS channel messages are demodulated, at the end of demodulation I check the validity of demodulation based on a specific test, if the test confirms the acceptance of the message, then the ACCESS confirmation message is generated and transmitted to the MS, the following operations are additionally entered: the access channel is selected on the MS depending on the ACCESS message duration, randomly selected during transmission of each sample view of the preamble, determined by the sequence of spaced apart intervals of the transmission of the preamble, transmit the signal of the preamble in the separated time intervals, respectively For this type, they expect from the BS a preamble detection response message, if they do not receive a preamble detection response message addressed to this subscriber, then the number of ACCESS samples transmitted by the MS during the procedure is counted, if it exceeds a certain specified number, then the ACCESS procedure is completed, otherwise In the case, the transmission of the next sample begins, and the power of the sample is increased by a certain amount, if a preamble detection response message addressed to this subscriber is received with permission m of the transmission, then they send the ACCESS message capsule to the BS if they receive a preamble detection response message addressed to that subscriber with forwarding to another ACCESS channel and indicate the transmission time, then the message capsule is sent in the redirected channel at the indicated time during the access procedure to the BS to search for signals access channel preambles are carried out for each of the types, and the detection of the signal of each of the types of preambles is considered as the detection of the signal of at least one user, determine ur the detected signals transmit messages addressed to these users, and depending on the signal levels, either the response message with the transmission permission in this ACCESS channel or the message is redirected to one of the free ACCESS channels and indicating the transmission time of the capsule of the ACCESS message, depending on the signal levels, the choice of free channels and capsule transmission time is determined depending on the duration of the message.
The proposed method can be described as a sequence of operations, namely, operations on the MS, accessing the communication system:
1. Select an access channel depending on the duration of the ACCESS message.
2. Perform an access attempt by transmitting a sequence of ACCESS samples, each of which consists of a preamble or preamble and a message capsule spaced in time.
3. When transmitting each sample, the type of preamble is randomly selected, which is determined by the sequence of spaced apart time intervals for transmitting the preamble.
4. Transmit the preamble signal in spaced time intervals corresponding to this type.
5. Expect from the Sun a preamble detection response message.
6. If the preamble detection response message addressed to this subscriber is not received, then the number of ACCESS samples transmitted by the MS during the procedure is counted, if it exceeds a certain specified number, then the ACCESS procedure is completed, otherwise the transmission of the next sample begins, and the sample power is increased by a certain amount.
7. If you receive a preamble detection response message addressed to this subscriber with transmission permission, then send the ACCESS message capsule to the BS.
8. If you receive a preamble detection response message addressed to this subscriber with forwarding to another ACCESS channel and an indication of the transmission time, then send a message capsule in the forwarded channel at the specified time.
9. Upon completion of the capsule transmission, messages await ACCESS messages for a specified time interval.
10. If ACCESS confirmation messages are not received within a certain time interval, then the number of ACCESS samples transmitted by the MS during the procedure is counted, if it exceeds a certain specified number, then the ACCESS procedure is completed, otherwise the next sample is transferred, and the sample power increases by a certain amount.
11. If, within a certain interval, a response message is received, they switch to the communication mode on the designated channel, and thereby complete the ACCESS procedure.
During the access procedure on the BS, the following sequence of operations is performed:
12. Search for the signals of the preamble of the access channel of each of the types is carried out, and the detection of the signal of each of the types of the preamble is considered as the detection of the signal of at least one user.
13. Determine the levels of detected signals.
14. Transmit messages addressed to these users, and depending on the signal levels the corresponding users transmit:
- either a response message with transmission permission in this ACCESS channel.
- either a message with forwarding to one of the free ACCESS channels and indicating the capsule transmission time of the ACCESS message, the choice of free channels and capsule transmission time being determined depending on the duration of the message.
15. The messages of the ACCESS channels are demodulated, at the end of which the reliability of the demodulation is checked based on a specific test. 7. The described device differs from the known device for implementing the prototype method by the execution of preamble 2 formation blocks and a preamble 7 detection unit.
Using the described device, the MS performs the ACCESS procedure. The purpose of the access procedure is to inform the BS of the service request and obtain from it the necessary information for further service. To perform the random access procedure in the CDMA communication system, in addition to the information channels, there is a set of special reverse ACCESS channels, each of which corresponds to a certain long code.
In a CDMA cellular communication system (prototype), a BS carries out continuous transmission via pilot and synchro channels of the signals necessary for the MS to enter the synchronization mode with a single time system, as well as periodic transmission of service messages on the notification channel to transmit MS system information, including information about the number and parameters of ACCESS channels.
Prior to the start of the access procedure, the MS enters synchronization mode with a single time system. For this purpose, the signals of the pilot and sync channels are used. Then, the MS receives the necessary information on the number and parameters of the ACCESS channels provided by this base station through the notification channel. After that, the MS selects one of the ACCESS channels. In accordance with the inventive method of the MS, the selection of the access channel is based on the duration of the message that the MS is about to transmit. For example, the MS randomly selects a channel from a group of channels corresponding to a given message duration. Having selected the channel, the MS generates the corresponding long code, as well as the ACCESS message, which contains the information necessary for the BS to identify this MS and assign it a communication channel. Then the MS prepares to transfer the ACCESS sample.
The ACCESS sample structure corresponding to the claimed method is shown in FIG. 3. The preamble is formed and transmitted only during a sequence of intervals spaced in time.
N. The sequence of signal transmission intervals during the preamble forms a certain kind of preamble. Obviously, there can be several such species, say N.
3). In determining the type of preamble, one may be guided by the following considerations. Let's say the radius of the cell is 10 km. In this case, the maximum value of the doubled propagation delay of the signal in the channel is 0.067 ms. The width of the preamble slice should be selected from the condition >> 0.067 ms, for example 1.25 ms. Under this condition, when receiving on a BS, the transmission intervals of preambles of various types can overlap by no more than 0.067 / 1.25 = 5%. Consequently, the increase in the level of cross-correlation between preambles of different types is not more than 5%. Let, for example, the preamble duration be 3 frames with a frame duration of 10 ms. Consequently, 24 “pieces” of the preamble fit along the length of the preamble. If the preamble of one MS consists of 4 "pieces", evenly spaced along the entire length of the preamble, then along the entire length of the preamble we can place 6 types of preamble. The preambles of various types will differ in time shift of the "pieces" relative to each other (see Fig. 3).
4. Before starting the transmission of the preamble, the MS randomly selects one of the N types of the preamble and remembers the selected number. The operation algorithm of the preamble forming unit 2 can be represented as shown in FIG. 4.
5. A BS ACCESS receiver searches for each of the N types of preamble. An example of the timing diagram of the operation of the ACCESS channel receiver on the BS is shown in FIG. 5.
If, at the end of the search, the BS detects a preamble signal of any of the N types, then it transmits a response message addressed to subscribers communicating with this type of preamble.
The BS does not transmit a response message addressed to subscribers communicating with those types of preambles that were not found at the end of the search.
Addressing the response message can be performed, for example, by indicating in the response message the numbers of the types of preambles that the BS has detected, or in some other way.
Subscribers who do not receive a message addressed to them start transmitting the preamble of the next ACCESS sample. In this case, the power of the sample increases, and the appearance of the preamble is again determined randomly.
12. An example implementation of the preamble signal detection unit is shown in FIG. 6, where it is indicated: matched filter 10, accumulation blocks 11, decision block 12.
The input signal is processed in a matched filter 10. From the output of a matched filter 10, the signal is fed to the inputs of N storage units 11, each of which accumulates the signal at time intervals corresponding to this type of preamble. The accumulation result in each accumulation block 11 is compared with a threshold, a decision is made to detect the preamble of each of the N types in the decision block 12. The BS remembers the numbers of the detected types of the preamble and uses them when transmitting the response message.
The BS may set the priority for ACCESS messages by transmitting relevant information in the response message. The claimed solution provides for the possibility of transmitting several messages from different MSs on one access channel during one time slot one after another. In order to carry out such a transmission, the BS must estimate the duration of the incoming messages. To this end, all access channels are divided into several groups, according to the length of the access message transmitted by the MS, for example, three. The duration values of messages transmitted in the channels of each group are, for example, as 1: 1.5: 3. In this case, the slot length of the access channel of all groups is determined by the sum of the durations of the preamble, the waiting interval, and the maximum message capsule. Before starting the transmission of the sample, the MS determines the duration of its message and selects the appropriate access channel. For example, if the message capsule of any MS does not exceed one third of the maximum duration, then this MS randomly selects one of the access channels of the first group. If the MS message capsule does not exceed half the maximum, then it selects one of the ACCESS channels of the second group, otherwise the MS selects a channel from the third group.
The distribution of channels into groups is known on the BS. Thus, the BS has information about the free access channels and the capsule length of the message transmitted by the MS with this type of preamble. Based on this information, the BS generates a response message addressed to subscribers found during the search for the preamble. In this message, subscribers having this type of preamble are informed of the access channel number and the start time of the transmission of the message capsule. Moreover, in one channel, three messages corresponding to the first group or two messages corresponding to the second group or one message corresponding to the third group can be transmitted.
Messages transmitted with a significant delay may cause a synchronization violation, so a short preamble is included in their capsule, which is designed to search for a signal in a small area of the delays detected during the transmission of the first preamble.
An example of posting messages in channels of various groups is shown in FIG. 7. In the FIG. 7 example, in the first slot of the channel of the third group, one message of the third group is transmitted, and in the second slot of the same channel three messages of the first group are transmitted. In the first slot of the channel of the second group, two messages of the second group are transmitted, and in the second slot of the same channel, one message of the third group is transmitted. In the first slot of the channel of the first group, three messages of the first group are transmitted, and in the second slot of the same channel, one message of the third group is transmitted.
8. Thus, the claimed solution allows to increase the efficiency of using access channels. In the prototype, the number of access channels should be significantly larger than the number of MS broadcasting. As a result, this resource is spent inefficiently, because most of the time a number of demodulators are not involved in the work. At the same time, when messages from two MSs arrive in one channel, these MSs interfere with each other, which will lead to the passage of at least one of these messages. An example of a “collision” of signals from two subscribers in a random access process using the prototype method is shown in FIG. 8.
9. In the claimed method, for channels that receive messages from two MSs, a distribution procedure is provided for all available ACCESS channels. In this case, the most powerful MS is allowed to transmit a message in the current channel. For the rest, MSs are looking for free access channels. And their messages are transmitted through these channels. If such channels are not enough, then in some channels capsules of several messages are transmitted one after another. As a result, as many demodulators as there are types of preambles will always be involved in the work. When several MSs arrive in one channel, these MSs will be distributed over different channels or in time in one channel and will not interfere with each other. An example of eliminating a “collision” of signals from two subscribers during a random access process using the inventive method is shown in FIG. 9.
Using the proposed method increases the likelihood of successful access while reducing the power of the sample, as well as reducing the likelihood of a “collision" of signals from subscribers who accidentally fall into the same ACCESS channel. This is achieved as follows.
- The preamble signal is transmitted only during a sequence of time-spaced intervals, and before starting the transmission, mobile subscribers randomly select one of these sequences.
- The preamble is transmitted over separated time intervals. This allows, firstly, to compensate for the influence of fading, and thereby increase the likelihood of detection at the same signal power, secondly, to distinguish preambles from different users, and using this information to eliminate “collisions” of signals from different users.
- A time interval for waiting for a response message between the preamble and the message capsule is introduced, this allows to reduce the excess power of the signal transmitted during access.
- When choosing an access channel on the MS, the duration of the transmitted message is taken into account. This allows the BS to “compress” messages, distributing them between different channels, thereby increasing the efficiency of using communication channels.
A comparative analysis of the random access method of MS subscribers with a prototype shows that the invention is significantly different from the prototype, as it leads to a significant reduction in the interference power generated by users accessing the communication system and to reduce access time. This allows you to increase the capacity of the system and reduce the time-based monthly fee for services provided to users.
A comparative analysis of the proposed method with other technical solutions in the art did not allow to identify the features claimed in the characterizing part of the claims. This allows us to conclude that the inventive method for random access of subscribers of CDMA mobile communications MS meets the criteria of "novelty", "inventive step" and "industrial applicability".
