Abstract
Description
The invention relates to nuclear physics and can be used in experiments on accelerators.
There is a method of increasing the sensitivity of a photographic emulsion, which consists in preliminary irradiation of the emulsion with the main exposure light [1]. The disadvantage of this method is that the increase in sensitivity after exposure allows you to highlight only those events that occurred after exposure.
As a prototype of the taken method, which consists in reducing the sensitivity of a nuclear emulsion under the influence of laser radiation [2]. The disadvantage of this method is that only events that occurred before the emulsion was irradiated with a laser are distinguished.
The proposed method is characterized in that the emulsion is cooled before irradiation to a temperature at which the electron lifetime on small traps exceeds the registration time of charged particles, so that when a charged particle passes through the emulsion, a hidden photographic image is not formed. During registration of charged particles, the emulsion is irradiated with a flux of photons with a quantum energy sufficient to reduce the electron lifetime in the traps to 10 -7 - 10 -5 s. In this case, the electrons formed after passing through the emulsion diffuse through the crystal to deep traps and form a latent photographic image. The time of irradiation with a photon flux is chosen more than the time of diffusion of electrons to the centers of sensitivity and less time of registration of charged particles. The emulsion is irradiated with a photon flux with a quantum energy less than the width of the stripped zone of silver bromide crystals. Additionally, to expand the range of adjustable sensitivity to the emulsion, a constant or periodically changing polarity electric field is applied, which changes the electron lifetime on the traps and the electron drift velocity to the centers of the latent photographic image.
To implement the method, a type P nuclear emulsion was cooled in liquid nitrogen, exposed in a gamma-ray flux for a time T. For a time T 1 <T, a part of the emulsion was illuminated by a photon flux with a quantum energy <2 eV. After development, both sections of the emulsion were observed under an optical microscope. Tracks were observed only in that part of the emulsion that was irradiated with photons.
