Abstract
Description
The invention relates to technologies for the production of the medical isotope Mo-99 from irradiated fuel based on uranium.
Mo-99. Known methods for the production of the medical isotope Mo-99, based on the allocation of it from irradiated fuel based on uranium highly enriched in the isotope U-235 [US Patents 4,093,697; 4,094,953; 4,701,308]. These methods include the operation of irradiating targets with uranium and dissolving them after a short exposure in aqueous solutions of acids or alkalis. The resulting solution is subjected to the operation of isolating Mo-99 as a separate fraction (by extraction or sorption-desorption), which is subjected to refining to obtain a pure preparation of Mo-99.
The disadvantage of these methods is that a large volume of radioactive liquid waste is generated containing fissile material - enriched uranium. Despite the possibility of achieving high technical performance of the processes (high yield of the target product, short technological cycle), they are associated with the release of large volumes of highly active liquid waste (up to 35-40 liters per 1 kCi Mo-99), the storage and processing of which significantly reduces economic production indicators. A special multi-operation treatment of these wastes is necessary in order to separate uranium and prepare the wastes for disposal. In addition, to work with freshly irradiated material in large quantities, there arises the problem of protection against emissions of iodine radionuclides, in particular 1-131. The use of aqueous media to dissolve irradiated targets limits the amount of activity processed in one cycle (20-25 kCi).
A known method of separation and collection of Mo-99 from an irradiated uranium-containing target, based on thermal chromatographic separation [US Patent 4,123,4981]. The target material undergoes oxidation, and Mo-99 is separated in the form of volatile trioxide, which is captured and purified. The method avoids the formation of a large volume of waste containing fissile materials. However, its disadvantage is that all radioactive iodine also passes into the gas phase and there is a need for its complete capture. The system for the complete capture of the iodine-131 isotope should include multi-stage high-capacity filters, which are periodically also disposed of in waste. This method avoids the formation of liquid waste with fissile material, but leads to the formation of waste from the capture of radioactive iodine.
There is a problem of iodine when switching to a large volume of production, especially in the case of emergency depressurization.
- образование большого объема радиоактивных отходов, требующих специальной обработки;
- невозможность полного улавливания радиоактивного йода при крупномасштабной реализации способа (например, до 1000 кКи в одном цикле);
The disadvantages of this method are:
- the formation of a large volume of radioactive waste requiring special treatment;
- the impossibility of complete capture of radioactive iodine in large-scale implementation of the method (for example, up to 1000 kCi in one cycle);
- the danger of releases of radioactive iodine in cases of emergency depressurization of equipment in which the target material is located.
All the above disadvantages do not allow to organize large-scale production while increasing its safety.
The above disadvantages of obtaining molybdenum-99 are eliminated by the fact that in the proposed method for the separation of molybdenum-99 from an irradiated target based on a metal uranium, including separation of molybdenum-99 from the rest of the target mass with its subsequent refining, the target is dissolved under a layer of low-melting metal in molten chloride salt, containing a chlorinating agent, the liquid metal phase is separated, then, using high-temperature distillation of the metal solvent, the molybdenum-99 concentrate is isolated from it, which is then subjected to affinity aye.
Irradiated enriched uranium enters the reprocessing in the form of a target based on metallic uranium or its alloy; operations are carried out in an inert atmosphere. The target is placed under a layer of fusible metal (for example, zinc or cadmium). A liquid molten chloride salt (for example, an equimolar mixture of NaCl-KCl) containing a chlorinating agent (for example, in the form of zinc or cadmium chlorides) is placed on the metal layer.
- компонентов оболочки, например циркония;
During the interaction of metal and molten salt, exchange reactions occur, leading to the dissolution of the target components in the molten salt:
- uranium (according to the reaction of the type U + ZnCl 2 = Zn + UCl 3 )
- shell components, for example zirconium;
- fission products from the group of alkaline, alkaline earth and rare earth metals.
Т.е. Those. all components whose reaction equilibrium is shifted to the right.
In the liquid metal phase, fission products remain, the chlorides of which are less stable than zinc chlorides. These include noble metals and molybdenum. The metal phase, which does not contain iodine and uranium, is separated from the salt layer and is processed to isolate Mo-99. Metal (e.g., zinc or cadmium) is distilled off under vacuum. Then, the residue with metallic Mo-99 is dissolved in an aqueous solution for subsequent refining of Mo-99, or it is oxidized to dissolve in the form of MoO 3 . At the same time, uranium and iodine are not present in further products (and wastes).
After exposure, the salt phase (for decay of the iodine-131 isotope) can be subjected to a simple treatment (for example, electrolysis) with the release of uranium or uranium dioxide, ready for re-irradiation. After that, molten salt mixed with some PD can be subjected to simple precipitation treatment and used repeatedly.
To further increase the safety of the Mo-99 extraction process by the emission of radioactive iodine, the target dissolution procedure can be carried out together with the shell material if it is made on the basis of zirconium, aluminum, or other metals whose chlorides are more stable than metal chloride solvent. Moreover, the shell material also dissolves in the molten salt and is not present in the Mo-99 concentrate after it is separated from the metal solvent.
- уменьшить объем радиоактивных отходов, в том числе за счет повторного полезного использования урана и реагентов (соли);
- локализовать йод в твердом состоянии, пригодном для контролируемого хранения;
Thus, this technical solution has significant differences from the known method and allows you to:
- reduce the amount of radioactive waste, including through the reuse of uranium and reagents (salt);
- localize iodine in a solid state, suitable for controlled storage;
- significantly reduce the likelihood of iodine emissions in emergency situations.
We conducted a series of experiments in a protective chamber for processing real irradiated targets in order to isolate molybdenum-99 concentrate. As experimental targets, we used Uranium wire targets developed at the SSC RIAR with enrichment in uranium-235 90% with a diameter of about 1 mm and a length of about 100 mm, placed in a zinc matrix in a zirconium shell. The experimental targets were irradiated in the SM-3 research reactor at a nominal power per target of up to 1 kW for 7-10 days.
The exposure of the targets after irradiation was about two days. Target processing was carried out in a NaCl-KCl-ZnCl 2 salt melt at a temperature of 720-750 o C in a quartz crucible in an atmosphere of purified argon.
900oC.The distillation of zinc from the liquid metal phase after separation from salts was carried out in a quartz crucible in an atmosphere of purified argon at a temperature of 900 o C.
Table 1 shows the distribution of the main fission products and uranium during processing of targets N 1 and
Thus, this invention has significant differences from the known method and allows you to achieve your goals.
All this, on the whole, makes it possible to create a production of large unit capacity while increasing process safety.
