Abstract
Description
The invention relates to metallurgy and can be used for the production of damask steel.
It is known that a prerequisite for the formation of a damask pattern, visible on the surface of the steel with the naked eye, should be to obtain austenitic grain larger than 500 microns in size, which is surrounded at the borders by a carbide network [1]. It is also noted there that such a grain is obtained by slow cooling of the ingot after crystallization. However, as you know, with slow cooling of iron-carbon alloys, complete or partial decomposition of iron carbides (cementite) occurs, the so-called graphitization, this entails a deterioration in the mechanical properties of steel.
From general ideas about crystallization of a metal, it is known that the less the melt contains impurities and the lower its cooling rate, the greater the size of the crystallized grain. Thus, it is known that the conditions for obtaining coarse austenite grains can serve as purity from impurities of the initial charge materials, refining of the metal melt and a slowed crystallization rate of the melt, and accelerated cooling of the ingot after its crystallization can serve as a condition for preventing the decomposition of cementite.
Known methods for the manufacture of damask steel by producing composite ingots consisting of carbonized iron particles impregnated with cast iron. As a result of subsequent deformation of the ingot, a damask pattern is obtained [2,3]. As experience shows, in this case, the structure of carbonized iron particles has an uneven composition in carbon, and the areas of cast iron are too different in size from each other. This leads to a decrease in the mechanical properties of these steels.
Closest to the invention is a method of manufacturing damask steel, comprising loading carbon steel scrap into a crucible, melting the steel, carbonizing it with graphite to a content of 1.6%, casting the steel into ingots and two-stage cooling of the ingots: first to 900-1000 o C at a speed of 15 -80 o / min, and upon reaching this temperature - with a speed of 200-300 o / min [4]. However, as it has long been known from the theory of crystallization, a structure consisting of three zones is obtained by casting steel in an ingot: the outer one is fine-grained, followed by the zone of columnar crystals and, finally, the zone of equiaxed crystals. Thus, the structure over the cross section of the ingot is uneven and grains larger than 500 μm can only form in the central part of the ingot. From this it follows that the damask structure can be obtained not over the entire cross section of the ingot and that only with a very clean melt from impurities. Scrap carbon steel, by its definition, cannot provide the necessary purity of the melt without the use of additional refining, since carbon steel contains constant impurities: manganese up to 1%, silicon up to 0.4%, etc.
In addition, at the first stage of cooling at a crystallization rate of 15-80 o / min, the austenitic grain does not have time to grow to sizes greater than 500 microns, and at the second stage of cooling at a speed of 200-300 o / min in ingots with a carbon content of more than 1.6% thermal cracks may form.
The purpose of the invention is the creation of a uniform cast structure with grain sizes from 500 μm and above, which during forging of the ingot are elongated in the direction of forging, intertwined and thus form a damask structure visible on the steel surface with the naked eye after its corresponding etching; in addition, the proposed method produces malleable iron-carbon alloys with a carbon content of up to 2% or more.
The solution of this problem is achieved by the fact that carbon steel is melted in the crucible with a minimum content of impurities: for this, the materials that are the most pure from impurities, for example, armco-iron, are used in the initial charge; after carbonization of the melt with graphite, the melt is refined, for example, using flux, then the melt is cooled together with the furnace in the same crucible in which the melting was performed: in the first stage it is slowed down, for example, with the furnace lid closed until the metal crystallizes completely, and in the second stage it is accelerated , for example, with an open oven lid. The crystallization temperature is determined by one of the known methods, for example by thermal analysis. Moreover, in the first stage, the cooling rate is maintained less than 15 o / min, which contributes to the formation of austenite grain with a transverse size of more than 500 μm, and in the second stage, due to the acceleration of cooling of the crystallized ingot, the graphitization of cementite is prevented.
Example. Armco iron 10 kg is loaded into a refractory crucible. After melting, the metal is carbonized with graphite to a concentration of 2.0%. Then the melt is refined by adding flux to the liquid metal. After that, the closed furnace is cooled together with the crucible to a temperature of 1150 o C. Then the furnace is opened and cooling is continued with the lid open to room temperature. In conclusion, take out the crucible and remove the finished ingot from it.
As a result, the microstructure of the ingot is perlite grains with sizes across from 0.5 to 1 mm, which are surrounded by a discrete cementite network with large inclusions of primary cementite (Fig. 1, a 50-fold increase). During subsequent forging, cementite inclusions are stretched in the direction of deformation, forming a beautiful damask pattern (figure 2, 3-fold increase). Appropriate heat treatment makes it possible to give damask steel a complex of high mechanical properties: the elasticity of the best spring steels with the strength and hardness of tool steels used for metal processing, and large carbide inclusions give damask steel high wear resistance.
