Abstract

FIELD: polygraphy. SUBSTANCE: an indicator is formed by a set of separate labels-riders, having addressing index and being protruded out of an end part of book block. The labels-riders are sized to pages of the book in one or more sheets, and they form stepped rows. Sheets, relating to different stepped rows, are mutually separated with the aid of a lace bookmark. Each label-rider is sized only to an even page of the book in such a way, that it does not protrude outside of limit of edges of hard covers of books. EFFECT: enhanced serviceability. 3 cl, 2 dwg

Description

 The invention relates to the printing industry, and can also be used wherever books are regularly accessed as storage devices (most often reference books, dictionaries and encyclopedias).

 Along with the use of books as storage devices, i.e., for the orderly recording, storage and retrieval of all kinds of information in natural or code languages, there appeared indicators for placing book information using one or another type of addressing.

 At first, this was achieved only by page numbers. Then a special section of books was introduced and became mandatory, now called the "Table of Contents" or the "Table of Contents". With the advent of dictionaries, reference books and encyclopedias, alphabetical indexes of the placement of information arose. Their advantage is simplicity, increased orderliness, and the appearance of the actual addressing of information placement, since with their help the amount of textual information is divided into the corresponding number of sections according to the number of letters in the alphabet, in each of which the words are arranged taking into account the place in the alphabet of the second, third and so on letters in the word. The alphabetical order of letters in the alphabet is memorized and stored in a person’s memory, and with it the principle of targeted addressing based on the alphabet.

 Search and selection of the desired page is carried out first by opening a book on intuition, at random, and then refined by turning the pages and comparing the searched word with the words on the pages. At the same time, errors, repetitions of searches, refinements, returns are not uncommon. Human thinking, constantly busy comparing words and shifting attention from addresses to the meaning of words, leads to rapid fatigue of a person, and visual fatigue, especially with age. All this prompts the invention of more advanced methods that facilitate, improve the search and finding the desired page.

The Soviet Encyclopedic Dictionary published in 1989 provides a new solution called the Alphabetical Search Index, which is given in the form of a table located on the upper and duplicated on the lower covers of the dictionary. Its use is explained by the example of finding a page with the word "Banner" according to the rule:
“At the intersection of line“ 3 ”(the first letter of the word) with the column“ H ”(second letter of the word“ banner ”) we find the number 470. This is the dictionary page, starting from which it is easy to find the right word."

 In fact, this is not at all so easy, especially for other words. For the absolute number of other words, only the page interval will be determined by the second letter, among which is the right one: for example, for the word "conversion" it will be 52 pages, exactly how many pages contain words with the syllable "ko" (before the syllable "kr"). Therefore, the full search algorithm looks much more complicated than the above rule. This "Alphabetical Search Index" facilitates the search for the desired word only with irregular and few calls. In bilingual dictionaries, it is unlikely to find application.

 The prototype of the proposed technical solution can be called an invention patented in the USA N 3303080, 1967.

 The well-known technical solution "Index table" is formed by a set of individual labels with address indices and protruding beyond the end of the book block of labels-raters glued to the pages of the book through one or more sheets and forming a step series.

 The purpose of the invention is to implement the search and selection of the page of the book containing the information sought in the most ergonomic, accurate and fast way, to make the production and manufacture of the index technological and economical both in the printing process and in the manufacture of the index by the user when the books are already published, went on sale or used by the user, to increase the applicability, durability, reliability, maintainability of the index, regardless of the format of the book and the number of pages.

 The essence and significance of the invention is easier to understand if the book is considered as a full-fledged storage device that requires a special addressable device, for which, firstly, the processes of production, sales and long-term operation are different, and secondly, the process of direct use, when it is necessary to distinguish between the stages of search and sample information, i.e. visual search of the index and manual selection of the desired page containing the desired information.

 The essence of the claimed invention consists in the complex application of a number of trivial and non-trivial solutions that optimally satisfy various production and operational requirements, embodied in the new design of the book index, which provides convenient search, quick and reliable selection of the desired page containing the desired information with the same predefined accuracy.

When developing the elements and the design of the pointer, the following trivial and non-trivial (not containing and containing novelty elements) solutions are applied that form the distinguishing features of the claimed invention:
a) small-format, thin, one- and multi-colored labels-raters are made separately from a book from thick and strong paper, for example, whatman paper; or cardboard, for example, used for punch cards; or sheet organic (synthetic) material, for example, plastic with a thickness, usually not more than 0.2 mm;
b) labeling of raters is not done on each sheet of the book, but after one or even after two, three or more sheets: depending on the accepted accuracy of the first selection of the desired page;
c) gluing labels-raters is carried out stepwise, one after the other and one below the other in one or several step rows, which just provides not only the convenience of viewing the address indices of one row, but also ensures the preservation of the original thickness of the book, as it thickens only the thickness of 1-7 labels, located at the same level in different rows, and negligible;
d) the total number of labels-raters and, therefore, the number of step rows depends on the accuracy of the first sampling of the desired page, the page format of the book and the accepted width of the labels;
e) gluing of labels-raters on a sheet is carried out mainly from the side of even pages, which causes the gluing place to work when fetching and holding the sheet, not by a gap, but by a shift, providing greater durability and better maintainability of the pointer;
f) the design of the index makes it possible to equip the book with the proposed information index both during the printing process of production using mechanisms and devices, and after the book is put into operation by the user himself, manually; in the latter case, the book may go on sale together with a set of labels-raters, made separately in one way or another;
g) if the equipment of the book with the proposed index is foreseen in advance, its hard covers are made slightly wider on the side of the ends to ensure the safety of labels-raters protruding beyond the end of the book;
h) a set of labels-raters for the index can be manufactured and sold completely separately, regardless of any particular book, to be used according to the attached instructions for equipping books with the proposed index at the user's discretion;
i) if the index contains several stepped rows of shortcuts-raters, then in the book several ribbon or lace bands between the rows can be provided or made;
j) the application of address indices on labels is possible both before gluing labels-raters to the sheets of the book, and after gluing;
k) universality, equal applicability of the index for books of any format and thickness (number of pages), quality of paper, the user's language used.

 The design of the individual elements and, as a whole, of the information index are illustrated by drawings, where Figures 1 and 2 show various positions of the book with labels-raters fixed to the sheets.

The algorithm for visual search and manual selection of the desired page of book 1, if it contains the proposed index of information, consisting of several rows of shortcuts-raters 2, separated by lass 3, consists of only four actions;
1. Select the desired row.

 Having visually determined the row to which the index address belongs, using the lassa, with one movement of the hand, discard the unnecessary part of the book, exposing the desired row.

 2. Find the desired label-Reuters.

 Visually looking at the labels for the address indexes applied to them, find the one you need and touch your finger to it.

 3. Select the desired page.

 Gently grabbing the racer’s label with the thumb and forefinger, open the book for it and, without lowering the label from the fingers, browse the information on the pages to the right and left of the selected sheet, looking for the right one.

 4. If the place of the book and the desired page are selected correctly, then find the information you are looking for, if not, then refine the page by turning it over, or return to step 2 due to a mistake, resuming the search.

 The proposed index-search book index of information has significantly higher indicators in terms of manufacturability, economy, ergonomics, reliability, durability, maintainability and effectiveness compared to analogues and prototypes, which are achieved by the integrated application of the solutions described above, which ultimately leads to such advantages of this index, which will cause strong interest among every consumer of book production.

 1. INDEX-SEARCH BOOK INDEX OF INFORMATION, formed by a combination of individual address indices and protruding beyond the end of the book block of labels-raters glued to the pages of the book through one or more sheets and forming a step row, characterized in that it contains additional step rows of labels- Reuters and Lyass for separating sheets belonging to different stepped rows from each other, with each label-rater glued only on an even page and thus, it does not protrude beyond the edges of the solid breath book covers.  2. The index according to claim 1, characterized in that the labels-raters are made of multi-colored material of a thickness of not more than 0.2 mm.  3.
