A method of controlling a residual current device, in which a circuit breaker with an independent trip coil is connected and power is supplied to the protected and measuring circuit, a differential current is measured and a trip signal is generated, which is supplied to the trip coil, characterized in that the trip signal is formed into one or more time intervals, if the circuit breaker does not trip in the previous interval, then in the next time interval, the tripping time is increased from ignal, and the value of the disconnecting signal at each time interval is selected depending on the required total disconnection time of the protected electrical circuit.
