Solving the problems associated with the effective counteraction against modern terrorism has sharpened interest in systems for countering stocks using biological weapons. Thus, according to a number of experts, the most dangerous and easily feasible scenario of a possible terrorist act is considered to be an aerosol with biological agents being thrown into the forced ventilation system.
It is known that the most effective way of reducing the level of microbial contamination in the air is the use of UV radiation, which has a pronounced bactericidal effect [1]. The mechanism of action of the bactericidal component of UV radiation on microorganisms is associated with the absorption of bactericidal radiation energy by a living cell [2]. To date, it has been established that short-wave UV radiation with wavelengths of 200 ... 300 nm has the maximum bactericidal activity.
The main task facing developers of effective sources of UV radiation is to provide the necessary level of radiation intensity in a given spectral range and increase the useful life (so-called operating time) of the source. The first problem is solved by choosing the optimal composition of the plasma-forming medium in which an electric discharge is formed, and the second depends on the materials used in the GR source of radiation and, first of all, the material of the flask. In almost all modern bactericidal plants used in medical practice, low-pressure tubular mercury lamps are used as a source of UV radiation [3, 4]. However, such lamps have several disadvantages. So, the maximum energy efficiency of mercury lamps is realized in a very narrow range of physical and energy parameters - only with a specific electric power invested per unit length of the lamp, not more than 1 W per 1 cm of length. That is why even the most powerful mercury lamps up to 1 m long do not exceed 100 watts in power. As a result, the intensity of UV radiation and, accordingly, the irradiation of the treated object is very low - microwatts per 1 cm 2 . And, therefore, for a set of the necessary biocidal dose and the implementation of the disinfecting effect, a long exposure is required [5]. Another significant drawback of mercury lamps is associated with the monochromaticity (selectivity) of the emitted UV radiation (254 nm). But since different microorganisms have different spectral absorption bands in the UV spectral region [6], efficiently mercury lamps can inactivate only certain types of microorganisms — those with a maximum spectral sensitivity that matches or is close enough to the spectral line of the UV source radiation - 254 nm. For this reason, mercury lamps have very low biocidal efficacy against a number of microorganisms that can be used as biological agents in a terrorist attack.
[5].The indicated drawbacks are deprived of the source of UV radiation used in the implementation of the method of emergency disinfection of air from all types of microflora [7], which is especially important when countering terrorist acts using biological agents. This method of disinfection of the air is based on the use of high-intensity pulsed UV radiation of a continuous spectrum. In this case, inactivation of microorganisms uses UV radiation generated by a pulsed xenon lamp with a straight tube bulb made of fused silica glass (IIT type), which until recently were used mainly in laser technology [8]. The emission spectrum of such a GR of a pulsed source of high-intensity radiation, selected as a prototype, is continuous in the wavelength range of 200 ... 300 nm. As studies have shown, the wide-spectrum UV irradiation of microorganisms ensures the inactivation of various types of microorganisms regardless of their individual spectral characteristics, and the bactericidal efficiency of high-intensity pulsed UV radiation of the continuous spectrum in the wavelength range 200 ... 300 nm is approximately 30 times higher than the efficiency of low-intensity continuous UV radiation concentrated in the line 254 nm [5].
One of the main operational characteristics of the GR of a pulsed UV radiation source used as a radiating element of an air sterilization device is its durability. Under the durability of the GR of the radiation source, it is customary to understand its service life, during which the parameters of the source retain their values within the established limits. The durability of flash GR lamps used in air sterilization devices (a special case of photo-lighting devices) is calculated by the operating time, i.e. the number of hours by the criterion of reducing the peak radiation power by 30% [8]. In [9], it was indicated that the operating time of pulsed xenon GR lamps with a quartz tube bulb is no more than 150 hours. The main reason for the decrease in the peak radiation strength of such lamps is a gradual decrease in the transparency of the bulb. It was indicated in [8] that this is a consequence of the formation on the inner surface of the discharge part of the bulb reducing transparency (including in the UV spectral region) of plaque that occurs in lamps operating in the frequency mode at high specific load. Studies of the composition of plaque showed that its constituent components are products of silica dissociation (boiling and evaporation of quartz - 2500 ° C) arising from the interaction of plasma with quartz of a flask.
[10].Thus, the design disadvantage of the pulsed high-intensity UV radiation source selected as a prototype is a decrease in the peak UV radiation power during operation, which can only be compensated for by increasing the electrical load, which in turn, with a high degree of probability, can lead to to the destruction of the flask due to an increase in the gas-dynamic effect of shock waves and instantaneous thermal shocks at the instant of passage of a pulsed current of short duration [10].
The problem, which the utility model is aimed at, is to maintain the transparency of the bulb of the source during the long-term operation.
The inventive GR pulsed source of high-intensity UV radiation, as well as the GR pulsed source selected as a prototype, is equipped with a filled plasma-forming medium based on xenon with a straight tube flask from a material that is transparent in the UV region of the emission spectrum. The difference from the prototype is that the claimed GR source of high-intensity UV radiation is equipped with a discharge-limiting flask made of colorless leucosapphire.
Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of a specific embodiment of the inventive GR source of UV radiation.
The GR pulsed source of high-intensity UV radiation contains a straight tubular flask 1 made of colorless leucosapphire, at the opposite ends of which electrode assemblies 2 and 3 are hermetically sealed. The flask 1 is filled with a plasma-forming medium 4 in the form of an inert xenon gas. Flask 1 is an alumina single crystal (colorless leucosapphire) made according to the method of A. Stepanov [11] in the form of a straight tube, which provides a spectral transmission range and, accordingly, a source radiation in the required range of UV radiation - 200 ... 300 nm . The boiling point of single-crystal alumina is much higher than the boiling point of quartz (3500 ° C [12]) and, therefore, there is no change in the transparency of flask 1 for the reasons mentioned above (with reference to quartz) and does not cause a decrease in the peak strength of the UV radiation of the source during its long-term operation.
An experimental verification of the claimed design was carried out on the basis of a pulse source of high-intensity UV radiation with a leucosapphire bulb, the inner diameter of which was 0.5 cm, the interelectrode distance was 10 cm, and the xenon pressure in the cold state was 300 mm RT. Art. The energy of the discharge pulse was 60 J, and the repetition rate of the discharge pulses was 3 Hz. The tests performed showed that after 300 hours of operation, the decrease in the magnitude of the peak strength of UV radiation was no more than 15%. Thus, the technical result achieved by using the inventive GR source of UV radiation is to increase operating time (increase the service life while maintaining the magnitude of the peak strength of UV radiation), which is extremely important when using this source in hardware as part of equipment designed for emergency disinfection of the air.
GR pulse source of high-intensity UV radiation in accordance with the claimed solution is designed for mass production using standard technologies.
