Abstract
A liquid-absorbent structure (I) comprises a web (II) of density 0.06-0.3 g/c3 (II) coprises 40-95 wt. hydrophilic fibres (III) and 5-60 wt. % nonfibrous particles of a hydrogel-forming gelling agent (IV) thoroughly dispersed aong (III); (IV) has equilibrium gel volume at least 20 g synthetic urine per g (IV). When dispersed among (III) in the web, the particles of (IV) have a mass median particle size in range 400-1680, and the effective equilibrium absorbent capacity of the dispersed particles is greater than that for particles of size less than 400 microns dispersed in a similar structure. A compsn. suitable for use as absorbent gelling agent in fibrous absorbent web structures comprises nonfibrous, discrete, non-agglomerated particles of substantially water-insoluble, slightly crosslinked, partially neutralised, hydrogel-forming polymeric gelling agent material (V). (V) comprises 50-99.999 mole polyerised unsatd. acid gp.-contg. monomers and 0.001-5 ole % crosslinking agent. (V) has mass median particle size 400-1680 microns.
