Abstract
Novel copolymers comprise ethylene and at least 3 (pref. at least 5) mole % 1,3-butadiene and have a cluster index of 9 or less (pref. 5 or less). Pref. the copolymers have a mol.wt. distribution (Mw/Mn) of 3.0 or less and a mol.wt. (Mn) of 500-1,000,000 (partic. 500-200,000). Pref. most of the butadiene is incorporated in the polyethylene chain as cyclopentane rings connected in the 1 and 2 positions in the ring. Pref. at least 55 (partic. at least 70) wt.% of the copolymer molecules have a comonomer content within about 50% of the median comonomer content in mole % of the copolymer compsn. Opt. the copolymer may also comprise an alpha-olefin. Opt., besides the 1,2-cyclopentane units, the copolymer may also comprise at least one of 1,2 and cis and trans 1,4 noncyclic butadiene comonomer units. Prepn. of these copolymers in the presence of a metallocene/alumoxane catalyst system is also claimed.
