Abstract
Aromatic polyamines are prepd. in a continuous process employing an ion-exchange resin (I) catalyst, under specified conditions, involving the stages:- (A) preparing a precondensate by reacting distilled O2-free aromatic amine (II) with aliphatic aldehyde or ketone (III); (B) partly removing water to form a single phase contg. sufficient water to maintain moisture in (I); (C) passing it, pref. first through a "guard column", then through at least 1 plug flow reactor contg. at least 1 strong acid cation (I) (pref. contg. sulphonic or methylsulphonic acid gps.) selected from gelatinous styrene/divinylbenzene resin contg. not more than 2 wt.% DVB, or macroporous S/DVB resin contg. at least 10 wt.% DVB (or pref. through both types of (I) in series); and (D) recovering the polyamine prod.
