Description

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to waistband, and especially to tissue inserts which are used to reinforce waistband, and the waistband including such reinforcing inserts.

A reinforcement material known by the Trade Mark "BAN-ROL" has been manufactured and sold for many years. The material is a fabric tape which is comparatively thin in the direction of the fabric or narrow but flexible in the direction of the warp and is used to prevent winding of the edge of the garment in which the belt incorporating the belt is located . The tape has a transverse curvature which, in combination with the rigid web, exerts a force on the waistband fabric towards the wearer. Thus, the "winding" of garments, for example trousers or a skirt, is prevented. The fabric which the fabric of the reinforcing tape suitably comprises a monofilament in the web is generally yarn spun in the warp.

The initially flat ribbon may be molded under heat in the desired curved transverse cross-section. The tape is usually obtained by tearing it from a wide fabric or weaving it to the desired width on a narrow loom. The initial web may be treated to bind the web and warp, but the binding material may degrade during washing and dry cleaning. As a result, the weft threads may come out at the edges of the ribbon, and may skin and pierce the waistband fabric with undesired results. To overcome this problem, it has been proposed according to the UK Patent Specification 1 213 957 to cover the edge of the reinforcing tape, or both edges, with a protruding edge, for example of a plastic polymeric composition.

It has been standard practice, both with the original product and with the product modified according to the UK Specification δδ. 1 213 957, "finish" the reinforcing tape by covering it with or by immersing it in a solution of a thermoplastic resin material. This finish serves to anchor the weft threads to the warp yarns.

rm / of

There are problems associated with the use of such a "finish", however, especially with the pattern used in modern fashions. For example, the "finish" of plastic not only secures the warp to the warp but also tends to fill the interstices between the wires. With modern "Jeans" waistband it is usual to have three sewing threads; the needles may penetrate the interstices of the reinforcing fabric, and if these interstices are indeed filled with the polymeric "finish", the result is a wrinkling of the waistband.

It is therefore clearly desirable to avoid using such a "finishing" if possible, although it is equally important that the web is "anchored" to the warp and held upright when in use. It is an object of the present invention to provide a waist reinforcing tape which meets these requirements.

According to the invention there is provided a reinforced web and warp knitted fabric in which the web is of thermoplastic monofilament material and is secured to the warp by the loops formed in the warp.

Such a knitted fabric is particularly suitable for use as a waistband tape, and has a much softer feel than the woven fabrics used up to now.

In the fabrics of the invention, the warp may be cotton but is preferably a multifilament polyester. The carrier is preferably a monofilament polyamide web of 300 to 1100 denier, more preferably with a denier of the lower portion of that range. Suitably there are between 12 and 14 weft transverse threads per cm.

The fabric of the invention may, if desired, be treated

with a finish as before, but is no longer a

essential component of the fabric, since the weft yarns

are mechanically secured by the knotted ties in the warp.

One or both edges of the reinforcing tape of the invention

-463 752 RM / 3F

may be provided with a protruding edge to provide a smooth edge as described in UK Patent Specification 1 213 857.

The knitted fabric of the invention may consist solely of rows of knitted loops independently of one another. and may contain additional or "floating" yarns passing between the rows of loops to form a fabric independent of the inserted web The addition of floating yarns assists in the application of a soft edge of plastisol to the web providing extra fixation.

A reinforcing fabric according to the invention is schematically illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a schematic of a small portion of a reinforcing tape, proximate a border;

Figure 2 is a back view of one of the rows of loops shown in Figure 1; and

Figure 3 is a schematic, similar to Figure 1, showing a modified fabric with floating yarns.

With reference to Figures 1 and 2, a reinforcing tape is made from a reinforced fabric and knitted warp 1 comprising a warp formed of yarn 2, suitably of cotton or spun polyester, containing loops 3. A monofilamented fabric 4 and is secured thereto by pulling the warp and thereby closing the loops 3. The ends 5 of the weft threads 4 are retained in a protruding edge 6 of plastisol which can be applied as described in UK Specification 1 213 957.

The embodiment shown in Figure 3 is similar

to that of Figures 1 and 2, but a floating wire 7 passes between the fi

and forms with it a tissue independent of the web 4. The ends of the wires 7 are also retained in the margin sa

of plastisol 6.

The reinforcing ribbons are suitably formed by tearing from a wide fabric and are particularly suitable for use in reinforcing waistband. A particular advantage of the tapes is that they have a natural tendency to bend in one direction, thus completely avoiding the need to mold therein a transverse curvature as was necessary with the prior art reinforcing fabric described above.
